Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United StatesPeacefully, calm, relaxing Kamishichiken neighborhood providing much an appreciated respite from the tourist crowds of other areas of Kyoto. Small and cozy family-run restaurants and tea houses along the street. The Kinkaku-ji temple (with the iconic golden pagoda) less than a mile on foot. The Kitano Tenmangu shrine just at the end of the street. Spacious room. Very comfortable bed and soft duvet. Large, luxurious bathroom with private jacuzzi. Extremely clean. Wonderful staff. Good coin laundromat nearby. Easily connected to the rest of the city by multiple bus lines. Highly recommended.

United StatesNot the most soundproof stay, you may occasionally hear some banging around. Not too bad though and far from a deal breaker for us.
The private onsen and breakfast were amazing. The stay was really cozy and all amenities were excellent.

MexicoIt was a bit far from the center but we knew that when we booked. Also note that if you don't eat fish, the traditional breakfast might not be to your liking.
We absolutely adored our stay in this beautiful ryokan. We especially loved the tatami room as well as our private garden with onsen. The bathroom opened to the outside, which was a unique touch.

United StatesA bit far from the center of town, but convenient to some real highlights like Ryoanji and Kikiku. I left an item in the room and will call tomorrow to discuss picking it up next week
The ambiance was serene and calming and the staff welcoming. Rooms were quiet and well laid out. The neighborhood was true to old Kyoto with many hidden treasures.

United StatesThe only negative I have is that it can be a little tricky to locate via Google / Apple Maps. We initially got super close but were on the wrong side of the building, the exterior signage is small and doesn’t match what is listed on the booking.
Absolutely beautiful property in a charming neighborhood. There were a couple of convenience stores / restaurants / bars within close walking distance. The room was stunning and super comfortable. The outdoor bath is totally worth it.

Norwaylocation is unfortunately a bit outside of central Kyoto, and unfortunately not close to any subways. we ended up using taxi a lot. Recommended to get a bike, learn the bus system, or stay around the local area.
Fantastic room, great size with private "garden" and onsen bath, calm surroundings, very comfortable western bed, but option for futon. great minibar and service. all facilities were great.

AustraliaIt is a bit difficult to find, and the English sign shown at the entrance is slightly different (Oku Kizashi The Suite rather than Kamishichiken Oku), which causes us some confusion, and we met other people in the street who were also unsure if they were at the correct place. Once we knew we were in the right place it was all good though. You will also need to bus or taxi if you want to go to some of the more touristy destinations, or be willing to do lots of walking.
Lovely Ryokan, and ground floor rooms have a private onsen, which was fabulous. Toilet is modern, but the remainder of the room is fairly traditional. Comfortable bed and we had the option of traditional Japanese breakfast which is provided by the staff. While the place is located a little bit away from the main city, there was a supermarket within walking distance, and we managed to wander around and find some delicious little restaurants nearby. There are shines and temples nearby as well.

United StatesThe outdoor onsen experience was ruined for me due to it being located right next door the smoking section. The smell of cigarettes would waft into the area as I am trying to relax and enjoy the private outdoor onsen. This happened both night and day. 2 men were also drinking and being very loud, having to cut my outdoor soaking time short. Very disappointing. If the smoking area could somehow be relocated as to not interfere with other guests rooms that would be my only suggestion of improvement.
Staff professional, courteous, friendly and excellent. Room clean, comfortable and very spacious! The Japanese breakfast was tasty and a unique experienxe! Location was quiet and obscure— exactly the relaxing break I was looking forward to during my trip.

New ZealandThe room we had, 204, was directly off the street. The street lights shone straight through the cream window shades. So it felt like the room was lit 24/7. Also the A/C was really noisy, sounded like a fully loaded washing machine in the same room as you.
Beautiful accommodation, spacious and stylish. Great area.

This was an incredible authentic stay, a little far from the main area of Kyoto which was a blessing - Kyoto is sooo overcrowded! I highly recommend to check in, and go to dinner or lunch in the local area. Visit Kamichishiken Jirokichi. So authentic and amazing! I’d recommend not leaving and enjoying what this Ryokan has to offer. The breakfast is really special too. Definitely book the room with the outdoor private onsen.
