Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United KingdomThe open air onsen was amazing. Breakfast was very filling. We were able to leave our bags for a few hours after checking out. Easy to get around as there's a bus stop right outside.

JapanThe reception desk closed at 20:00 so you need to consider this to avoid having issues for the check-in. Hakone is large and the trains and buses have specific schedules, at a times is very crowded (is very popular a lot of turists), and there is just one road for cars and buses so it may get very congested (it was our case) so plan your trip carefully to avoid having issues for the check-in.
- Nice location, close to a train station and next to a bus stop. - Shared toilet and showers were really clean and nice. - Good Open baths and onsen. - Simple but nice breakfast.

IrelandWonderful public baths both within the hotel and next door. I went around dinner time and then late in the evening and had the whole place to myself. The place next door is amazing to wander around too, it was huge! I was a bit unsure about the shared toilet/shower but there was no issue, it was quiet and they had a good hairdryer in the ladies room. The room itself was also exceptional. There were autumn leaves outside my window when the sliding doors were open. A beautiful teapot and teacups were also provided. Yukata and haori were also available, which made me feel so cozy and at home. The bus stop is right outside and there was a great hiking route closeby. They were burning incense in the lobby when I was leaving and it smelled wonderful. And the breakfast was delicious! Overall I couldn't recommend it more.

GermanyBest place I've stayed in Japan ever! Staff is super friendly and helpful. The house itself is around 100 years old and has been renovated into a hotel 4 years ago. So there is no elevator. The whole atmosphere of this building makes u feel you are thrown back in time. Reall Studio Ghibli vibes. Really can't find anything I didn't like. There is one outside Onsen in the building and 3 more in the main building. Which are outstanding. Definitely planing to go back

I loved everything about this place. From the moment you turn the corner from the main road, you are transported to a new world. Everything is so personalized. When I arrived, the owner gave me a detailed orientation about the facilities and my room. My room was beautiful and immaculate. There is a complimentary coffee machine in the lounge that is open during certain parts of the day that I visited frequently. The open air hot spring was amazing. I loved the stay so much, I was trying to book another stay while still at the Ryokan. The breakfast was also amazing. It was seafood themed.

Australia- some rooms didn't have a toilet and only had shared. (No rooms we used had showers, but they aren't needed cause you shower at the onsen areas).
It's an amazing place, - Many options for onsen, private, indoor and tow outdoor, one open all night. - Stable wifi (but I didn't test the speed directly) - Decent breakfast (it was more continental though for those looking for more traditional). - perfect blend of old and new style, rooms felt more traditional, but had modern comforts in most (the larger room didn't have built in bathroom, but shared bathroom was next to it, the smaller room had a toilet built in). Yukatas and traditional footwear provided during the stay

Singaporeif dinner meals could be included it would be good as the nearest place to get food is way back at Hakone Yumoto station .
extremely cosy and yet exudes rustic feel at the same time ! reviews weren’t joking when it comes to the place looking like something out of a Ghibli film! toilets though shared were kept extremely clean , dry and with fragrance . Really thumbs up for this . also the hot spring baths were free to use even though I had tattoos ! keep up the good standard Kansuiro!

Malaysiathe shower room is not in the room, it’s at 2nd floor for ladies. the room only has toilet and a basin. it’s a little inconvenient for me as I am a little bit clumsy.
I love the little open air Onsen, the traditional structure of the building, and the delicate breakfast! The location is convenient as most of the buses will pass by. The service of the reception is good and with patience. Thank you.

United StatesThe annex is an older historical building so the insulation is a bit thin, as the other reviews mentioned, but I brought my own ear plugs and never had an issue with it. If someone is a light sleeper they may be troubled, but I personally didn’t mind it.
Absolutely beautiful property. The surrounding area was fun to walk around and explore. I loved that the hot springs were available for me to use even though I have many tattoos. The open air onsen in the main building was something out of a movie, it was amazing. Their breakfast was the best breakfast I had while visiting in Japan, and they even made it vegetarian for us, which I couldn’t find at many other places. Overall my favorite stay in a 2 week trip to Japan.

A magical hide away in the mountains near Hakone. Small ryokan means not a lot of commotion, easy and in other access to the open air baths, and a great all around experience. Be warned, restaurants in the area close early so plan accordingly but an escape from the hustle and bustle of the city is exactly what is needed!

Delightful small inn with the most amazing staff who went above and beyond. Even helped me fix my tripod.
