Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United StatesRooms which were not in use were not heated, or the heat was turned down. This was not an issue for us and some of the complaints I have read seem unreasonable. We wore sweaters and were comfortable.
We stayed here two nights. The hotel is not new. The men at the front desk as very business like, but we enjoyed our stay. The beds in our room were on tatami mats on the floor, which we were aware when we booked. We had some extra mattress pads in the closet, so we doubled them and they were very comfortable. Room was clean. Bathroom was basic. View of the lake was great. Each room has an individual thermostat. (We turned ours way down and had a window open in April.) Two chairs in the room. No modern extras, like a coffee maker or lights for the bed area which you can dim. BREAKFAST. The breakfast alone makes this hotel worth the trip. Traditional Japanese breakfast served as a traditional Japanese breakfast. Two hot pots plus. VERY friendly women who obviously take great pride in the breakfast service. Great location on the lake. Convenient for hiking and biking.

Australia3pm Check-ins and that the hotel bus service only runs from the station in the morning and afternoon!
The room had a great view of the lake and the Onsen had a great view of Mt Fuji. Both great factors for the hotel.

CanadaCould use a paint job in a few places.
The location was amazing. Waking up see Mount Fuji out our window was great. Lake Kawaguchi is a beautiful place to visit with so much to see. The hotel is lovely even though it is showing its age. The breakfast is wonderful and the ladies serving were very helpful.

Amazing traditional hotel (roykan). Loved the japanese style room (bathroom looked recently renovated) overlloking the beautiful Kawaguchiko lake. Staff was friendly and helpful, they have free shuttle to the station (which is 15mins walking otherwise). Breakfast was very rich and tasty in a dining hall with a beautifull view. There was also a bar/game room with pool, fussball and other games for free.

United StatesRoom was a bit dusty. Some Chinese guests were being very loud and taking naked pictures in the public bath/Onsen but that’s not something the hotel can control unless they have someone check in on the Onsen guests.
Convenient location. Beautiful lake right in front of the hotel. Room had all the basic amenities. Would stay again for a short stay. Had a nice view of my Fuji when I opened the window.

MalaysiaWe were trying to enquire about the shuttle service from the train station via Booking.com site to contact the hotel but no-one picked up the calls. Tried several times. Ladies sauna didn't have a view of Mt Fuji, unlike the men's sauna. Everything closes early, so be prepared with food options or more importantly, transport option, if you are not close to the hotel. Not many taxis, so we had to wait for a long time for one to take us back to the hotel at night. There are always long queues at the taxi stand - so beware
The gentleman manager at the front desk was excellent. I think his name is Mr Amano. He assisted us in whatever query we had and any service we required. The guy who rode the shuttle van too was good. The kitchen staff ladies were so lovely and attentive. Our breakfasts were always so tasty and filling. We had the end room with a wondeful view of Mt Fuji. I would have liked the Tatami traditional rooms but too difficult for us older folks - especially at night if using the bathroom. The location is ideal. Close to restaurants near by and right across the lake. Stunning views from the hotel waiting area too.

United StatesMy only minor complaint is it is a bit far away from super markets or restaurants. Not too far away, around 10 mins of walk, which can be problematic if it is raining.
It was a large room, traditional japanese style and amazing views. The hotel is right on the lake kawaguchiko, friendly staff and great facilities. We have really enjoyed staying here.

United StatesI didn’t like the air conditioning or heating units, they seemed difficult to keep at a certain temperature. The facilities are outdated.
We stayed in the cottage behind the hotel. This was a great experience for our group of 7. The onsen was great. It was very close to the bus stop for the Mt Fuji pass. The staff was very nice and helpful.

AustraliaThe property is ageing but in many ways it just added to its charm.
Huge room for Japanese standards with great view out over the Lake. Tatami style beds were very comfortable. Staff were excellent and provided high standards of customer service. The traditional Japanese breakfast was delicious and instagram worthy.

IcelandThere are some areas that require some maintenance, like the movies room, and the piano in the 2nd floor hall.
The hotel is excellent. It has an old feeling (in a good way), and it is perfectly located just at one side of the lake. It is very calm, and I had the fortune to have a view to Mt Fuji from my window. Also, it has an observatory in the tower where you can take pictures from all around.
