Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

AustraliaThe tariff was expensive and the property was looking a bit shabby with a maintenance program needed.
Beautiful setting by the river. Spacious and stylishly minimalist decor. Amazingly high quality meals as breakfast & dinner were part of the deal.

IndiaMeals include raw meat which we couldn't eat and cooked in rice water. Would have liked coffee and regular tea in the rooms. Only Japanese tea was available.
It's a very nice hotel facing the river. Good location. Bus stops right outside. It's quiet and clean. Facilities are alright. Nice hot bath with a view. We had asked for 2 vegetarian meals. They had said they couldn't serve, but for breakfast made an effort to prepare a vegetarian meal from their menu items. It was really appreciated. Staff was good. All in all a comfortable stay.

United KingdomReceptionist lost passion. They don’t smile as much as those waitresses.
Food was great but not as good as those hosted by local residences. Service of the waitress who apparently from abroad was good and always smiley. Outdoor onset was better than those two indoors.

AustraliaThe food could be improved perhaps fewer courses but higher quality! (11 courses was too much food)
The room was large and offered western seating. The view from our room was lovely overlooking the river. Outdoor onsen was excellent! It was very clean and well maintained. Food was ok. There was plenty offered however was not all to our taste. Some of the gish was overcooked. Being given a western breakfast on the second morning was a pleasant surprise!

SingaporeThere are no lunch options on hotel premises. But you can order a lunch bento box delivery to your room. The indoor onsen is basic.
The outdoor onsen (only fm Dec to Feb) is a wonderful geothermal natural spring. That in itself offers an exceptional experience. It’s a surreal experience to wake up in misty mornings, explore the surroundings, take a short hike to Kumano kodo trail, and enjoy the soak in a natural river onsen.

SingaporeThe tatami bedding was quite thin and the pillows way too soft for support and comfort. The room itself was basic and as many have mentioned, quite old.
The onsen and the food were nice after the long walks.

Hong KongThe hotel on the whole is showing its age. The main lobby obviously has been renovated for decades & our son’s Japanese style room is very old with worn out facilities.
Room sizes are large, especially for Japanese standard. Our western style room is well designed although materials used are inexpensive. Included meals (breakfast & dinner) are tasty & generously portioned. Indoor onsen are a bit old but outdoor ones are very enjoyable.

United KingdomAt no point during the booking process or following communications were we asked about dietary requirements (I don’t eat fish) all other hotels have asked if there was a set menu on offer and I was simply told that I’d have to ‘pick it off’ when the whole meal was fish. I ate a lot of rice… Tell them ahead of time if you have any issues, as you won’t be asked or catered to, which is annoying considering the price we paid
Location was amazing and relaxing in the onsen after finishing the Kumano Kodo was exactly what we needed. Free shuttle from the Heritage centre was a big help. Both public gendered baths and an open air private one for an extra cost if you want to go with the partner (if of opposite sex) Room was spacious and amazing view onto the river. Lady server at dinner was very attentive and friendly No issue with significant coverage of tattoos in the public baths

Japan- Does not seem to have ramps or other accessibility access - Some staff had a stronger smell which is very unusual in Japan - The room missed a proper laundry rack - Dinner was okay, breakfast was very underwhelming for the price
+ Great location in front of kawayu + Access and parking is fairly easy + Staff speaks good English (mostly non-Japanese) + Given the unique place, the value for money is not bad + Has an elevator

United KingdomThe reception areas might be a bit more modern, but for the price and location the hotel was great.
We had a room with a private onsen which was great - really modern and with an amazing view of the forest. Some reviews here mention the hotel being a bit outdated - possibly the reception areas, but the room itself was great and amazing value for a private onsen - I couldn't find an equivalent in the area for anywhere near this price. We found it to be really peaceful, and while there is a quiet road running in front of the hotel, we couldn't see it from our balcony. It's a very convenient location for Yunomine onsen, and the hotel shuttle took us for free to Hossihinmon-oji for hiking which was very helpful. Food was varied and generous. A good value way to have the Ryoken experience with a modern western room.

AustraliaI was surprised not to be offered a choice of meals. I like Japanese food but I would have liked an English translation of the meal I was presented with so I knew what I was eating.
the quality of the food was amazing - the variety of foods was top class - the three types of onsen were very enjoyable. I particularly liked the outdoor onsen - the staff who helped us catch buses were very helpful- the location right on the bus route and right on the river with the hot springs was wonderful.
