The sliding glass doors were a little noisy. And the other guests would sometimes leave it open, which let a lot of cold air into our room (we were right by the entrance).

Conveniently located around many restaurants. The manager was very friendly. The rooms were very clean. Overall very comfortable stay.

Such a lovely, really beautiful and peaceful place with friendly and helpful staff. Good breakfast, which came on time exactly when promised. Just notive to place the order for the breakfast early the day before. I slept really well on a traditional futon bed; could have stayed longer.

I stayed with my son for 5 nights. Sleeping on very hard futons was not easy for me and open downstairs toilets and bathroom was challenging for him.

The Ryokan rooms were beautiful with authentic touches. The host was friendly and helpful and the daily tea and snacks left in room very welcome. The location is perfect so close to main shops and Nishiki markets but away from crowds.

I see how some people may not know how to handle themselves when staying on a ryokan, and that may be challenging. But it is a great experience if you are willing to give it a try.

The Inn Kawashima offers a unique experience near some of the most interesting spots in Kyoto. First of all, staying in a typical Japanese-style guesthouse is a nice experience. The service was good and everything was in order.

Naturally staying in an inn you have to be quieter at night, and staying upstairs the stairs could be difficult to climb for some people as they are quite steep. Neither of these bothered us though - just things to consider for others!

Staying here was an absolute delight! It was such a cool experience to stay in a Japanese ryokan and we are glad we chose this place. The owners are really lovely, the rooms are really cosy and warm and sleeping on futons was so snug! Definitely helped in feeling more connected to the culture. The indoor garden was super cool, and the shared bathrooms didn’t bother us. We had the Japanese breakfast which was delicious, and we were able to give our luggage before check in and leave after check out. Will definitely recommend for anyone who is looking for a Japanese inn experience that is in a really convenient location!

The room was a bit dusty. The decor is a little bit old and worn.

The location was very convenient as it is close to kawaramachi station, bus stops, restaurants, and shops. The owner was very friendly and accommodating. The room was beautiful. It felt like stepping into traditional, feudal Japan for a night. The bed was comfortable, and the room was warm despite us visiting on a very cold night. The communal bathrooms and shower were clean. We were lucky that there was only one other couple there during our stay, so there were no issues accessing the bathroom facilities. The breakfast served in our room was delicious.

Location was excellent. Noise level was peaceful. The inn, while old (as stated by one of the house ladies) was decorated beautifully and very comfortable to stay in as long as you were gentle with the doors and equipment.

Glad to have experienced ryokan living in the heart of Kyoto (a few minutes walking distance from popular shopping streets). The space is clean with helpful staff. If you are travelling during winter season, make sure to bring warm slippers or socks to wear in your room.

It’s not to say I didn’t like it but if you are someone who would prefer their own ensuite this wouldn’t be the place for you as it remains shared facilities on the ground level of the inn.

The staff was very helpful and always kept the room neat and tidy. He was always willing to help out and organised our luggage transfer with ease. The room has a great feel to it and makes you feel really immersed in Japanese life. It is close enough to the main attractions of Kyoto and there are so many eateries along the street a stone throw away. Would recommend!
