Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

GermanyBreakfast and dinner time was a bit early for us. A bit of time flexibility would be good.
The food was exceptionally good. Though it might be challenging for people who aren't used to eat traditional Japanese dishes particularly in the morning. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Private onsen was great. The Ryokan is located in the forest. So, the view from our room was amazing.

MalaysiaNothing so far.
The food was delicious and of high quality and nutritious. The staffs were very polite and serve us well. The onsen was great too. Spacious and well equipped with toiletries. Yukata provided and each room has own toilet attached. Spacious and clean, though the furniture is a bit old. Perhaps, this is antique. Our rooms are downstairs, so no need to drag our luggage upstairs... anyway, they have lift. Overall, a very comfortable stay for all of us.

United StatesFacilities are dated as many have mentioned but clean. We realized as we were checking out that our room fridge stopped working so we had to throw out some of our food.
The staff were lovely and very patient with my English/Japanese translator. We loved the room (our first time sleeping on the mats). We enjoyed the onsen. Loved that the location was out of town. We rented a car so it was no problem. Loved seeing my name outside the door when we checked in. Food was fantastic. Breakfast was a little much for us at 8:00 but the quality of the food was outstanding.

AustraliaChecking in was very stressful. The owners spoke broken English (which is expected), however they rushed all instructions they gave us, leaving us feeling very overwhelmed.
The beds were comfortable, and the hot springs were lovely. The facilities and surrounding area were beautiful, and the location was right next to the bus stop. There was also plenty of room for a family for one night.

United KingdomIn slight need of modernisation
Traditional keisiki dinner and bfast included, making this great value for money. Great service. We booked the private onsen for an extra fee which was totally worth it (this is a traditional old bath; not a spa experience). Choice of colourful yukatas for the wife. Traditional-style room but not authentic, as most of the more affordable ryokans.

SpainIt was a bit far of everything if you don’t have a car you are a bit stuck in the place. They charge 6000 yen for dinner which I think it is a bit overpriced.
The ryokan was good. It is an old ryokan and it looks like an old ryokan, but it has all the amenities and services you expect. The staff was very nice but the language barrier was an issue. We booked the private onsen for half an hour and it was amazing. 100% recommended.

New ZealandThe breakfast was definitely traditional Japanese style, so be prepared for that. The carpets in the halls were definitely a bit dated, but otherwise fine.

CyprusAn authentic experience. This is a 300years old onsen. Here you will experience the real onsen but don’t expect luxury. The ryokan is old but very clean and spacious. The dinner was excellent and the breakfast was good. Be prepared for a different breakfast than the common. Forget croissants with butter and marmalades!! It’s fish!!! The bus stop of the Hakone pass bus is 3 mins from the ryokan. And the Ashi lake 10mins with the bus. Next to the onsen there is a museum that is worth a visit.
