Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

This property was amazing. The location was incredible - a very short drive from the snow monkeys. The village was beautiful. The ryokan was really authentic - enjoyed making up the beds and the complimentary robes. The food was also really good - even gluten free options catered for. A must stay property!!

Staff were friendly. Traditional building in centre of Osen area. Courtesy bus for pickup from station and dropped out to snow monkey park. Nice food. Very good espresso coffee.

Room was traditional and beautiful, great location to experience the onsens and the snow monkey park, with a helpful free drop off. We had breakfast and coffee in the restaurant and it was really nice. Staff were so helpful, especially the lady at breakfast :) One of our favourite experiences in Japan!

NetherlandsClosest convenience store is a 30 min walk to the Lawson next to yudanka station, there are local shops that close at 10pm, but the location is worth the walk
Location is amazing, close to 9 public onsens and also the monkey park. They provide shuttles from and to the Yudanaka station and also to the monkey park. The inn itself was clean and comfortable with good facilities, and also with a restaurant inside.

We were seeking an authentic experience of Japanese baths and staying in a Japanese Inn in a traditional style room and property. We were not disappointed. Authentic Inn with a warm welcome (within check in hours). We were delighted by our room which was traditional Japanese style with futons that you prepare yourself. Toilets and showers are shared separately. We liked the fact that it was lights out and no noise from 10pm due to the house being made from wood and being over 100 years old. This is not a modern house recreation, it is an authentic inn and has some simple upgrades but not brand new. We were somewhat surprised by the "western" additions to the breakfast and dinner menus but were pleasantly surprised by the Japanese options. The highlight was using the various public Onsen that the residents of the inn have the keys to access freely. The in supplies all garments and footwear to go from hot bath to hot bath. Really wonderful glimpse into authentic Onsen village life.

SwitzerlandIt felt more like a high end hostel than a Ryokan, but we actually loved that.
The staff was so friendly, and the hotel has a great vibe. The building and facilities may be old, but that's really part of its charm. We would come back again for sure.

United StatesWe are not used to traditional futons, and this was an adjustment. The room was otherwise very tidy and comfortable, similar to more Western hotel room sizes in Japan (which is still on the small size compared to American hotels).
It’s set in a traditional onsen town, so if you are there for a more traditional ryokan/onsen experience, it is fabulous! It’s also a short bus ride and hike to the snow monkey park, which is amazing to see. There are 9 public onsens to try, and the scenery is gorgeous. Our staff was very accommodating, and offered both.a private onsen slot as well as shuttle to the nearest train station included with advance reservation.

United StatesI was there during the winter and it was very cold. I think additional blankets should be offered during the winters.
This is a fantastic place to stay. I had some awesome conversations with the people in the hostel room. The rides to the train station were a big help. Walking around the small town was a great experience.

JapanI think the access was pretty hard, most of the roads were blocked due to snow.
There were many onsens to go to, as well as private onsens. There were also buses to go to the money park that you can book. The restaurant below was an Italian restaurant. (the Karage was so good) We also had ramen beside the hotel. also good

A wonderful ryokan in Shibu onsen, which is so close to the 9 public onsens. Shoes, robes and towels provided for this. The room was a great size and heaters in the room for when it got cold. Shared bathroom facilities were good and the Japanese style breakfast was very tasty. The staff were very friendly and the drop off at the station after check out was very helpful. Great communication with the ryokan before arrival. The staff recommended places to eat - it’s a small, quiet village and not everything was open (due to the ski season having just finished). We didn’t eat at the hotel because their restaurant is closed on Tuesday evenings. Would recommend!

CanadaWe booked this property because we were informed that there was a free ski shuttle to Ryuoo from train station. Shuttle had ended the week before & it was going to cost $100 in taxis to get to/from. Certainly not the Ryokan’s fault but I would think they’d be in ‘the know’ for their guests. We had to forfeit our 2nd night (no refund) as it was pouring rain, we’d seen the monkeys, done the 9 baths & there wouldn’t have been much to do with my 14 year old son now that skiing was a bust. We only had 9 nights in Japan. The only other comments were that the communal bathrooms were cold (the building is 100+ years old) & we had to set up our own futons.
It was a traditional Ryokan right in the heart of the 9 public onsens. The room & futon set up were comfortable. The staff were very kind.

United Arab EmiratesNo food in evenings on Tuesdays. Not much open in town. Few choices of places to eat and everything shut by 9 so plan ahead.
Snow Monkeys within a 25 minute walk. This was great. Staff friendly and helpful. Access to Shibu Onsens are included and you get the traditional robes and getas too. You can also hire a pirvate onsen for cheap. Rooms are traditional and was a fun experience. One night on a futon was plenty though. Shared bathroom was very clean.
