Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Everyone is so very warm, friendly, and welcoming! We enjoyed the greetings from their 2 behaved dogs, Leo and Miko! We loved the welcoming green tea and fresh fruit every afternoon. Not to mention the free Maiko show( Tuesday night starts 2040.. we had fun, very interesting to learn maiko vs giesha. The whole family is so welcoming and fresh roses delivered to our room for our 25th wedding anniversary, how sweet! We loved them all .We will highly recommend if anyone wanted to explore Rokyan style experience.

United StatesNothing, we loved everything about this place.
This Ryokan was right in Gion, so we were able to be at the heart of it all. It can get pretty crowded, but this was off on a side street so it was a nice calm away from the hustle and bustle. The staff here is AMAZING. They are so nice and so helpful. We actually forgot our wedding rings when we checked out, but they mailed it for us. The dogs on the property are also super cute.

United StatesI have no complaints!
I can’t recommend this place more!! It was in a quiet nook of the Gion area and it was such a great experience. The staff feel more like hosts. They are so accommodating and easy to communicate with even though I don’t know any Japanese. The room has everything you need and the staff give you little snacks and pastries for free which I thought was so sweet. They also helped me do my laundry for me for free. The ryokan is a 15 min walk from the closest subway but it honestly doesn’t even feel that long because there’s so many shops to look at on the walk there. The view from the room was also great I could see one of the shrines just from my window. On my second day there they also had a meiko show for all the hotel guests for free. It was great to experience it and also cool to see some of the other hotel guests. Overall, highly highly recommend if you’re planning on staying in Kyoto! (They also had two super cute golden retrievers!)

AustraliaCharming ryokan in a fabulous location with generous hosts that provided thoughtful touches like they served you afternoon tea every day and provided a Maiko show for free. It was incredible to be able to ask the geisha in training about her life and play traditional Japanese games with her.

United StatesThe bathroom could use some hooks to hang towels or clothing. A low portable towel rack and plastic tray took up floor space and the tray would get wet as the shower curtain did not completely contain water.
The hosts were very gracious and made available a variety of snacks throughout the stay including fresh fruit and breakfast pastries left in our room each day. It was nice to have a Japanese home experience. The dogs were so calm and gentle. The location was very quiet and the courtyard entry felt safe.

AustraliaI am so glad I chose to stay here. It was easy to get to via a bus from the train station and it's perfectly near all the major Gion sights. The family who own the hotel are welcoming and helpful and made my stay very comfortable. I could wake up at 5.30am visit a few places before the crowds of tourists arrived and then come back to the hotel for a nap, breakfast and a shower before heading out again. They leave little snacks for dessert and breakfast in the fridge and also fruit, which was a lovely touch. The room was huge and so was the bathroom. Ok the decor doesn't match and its kind of corny but the bed was so comfortable and they provide PJs, Toothbrush etc plus there is a kettle, fridge and TV in your room and a microwave, little oven and snacks you can help your self to in the hallway. One night they had a free Geisha performance with complimentary drinks in the downstairs lounge room. I would stay hear again in a heartbeat.

Wonderful in every way. Exceeded our expectations again and again. Quiet, comfortable traditional room with a great view, in a bustling, walkable part of Gion. Close to everything yet a restful hideaway. The friendliest most kind and helpful hosts. Topped off with endless yummy snacks and a free Maiko show. Don’t hesitate to stay here.

United StatesThe owners and staff were extremely friendly and helpful; they gave recommendations on what to visit and how to get there. I thoroughly enjoyed the Maiko show and games on Saturday night, it was a special experience. The Japanese style room was excellent! The view was great, the futon was very comfortable, and there was a low Japanese table. I was amazed by the amount of tasty treats and snacks they provided, something always hit the spot after a long day of walking through the beautiful neighborhood. I plan on staying here again on my return to Kyoto.

United StatesIf I had to be picky, I would say that hours or operation make it difficult to check in. They close and go to sleep at night, but it's understandable, considering it is a family-style ryokan and they do work with you to make sure you can get back in if you do stay out late. Just consider that before booking and expecting that you can check in at midnight, because you can't, they'll be asleep.
Absolutely the best staff. It's a family with dogs and they were so sweet, making sure there's always snacks and beer in the room. The room was also bigger than I expected and absolutely beautiful. Really felt like a welcoming home stay.

AustraliaWe loved absolutely everything..it was like walking into a warm familiar home. Room and beds super clean, traditional beds on floor but so very comfortable, pillows amazing. They made us feel like long lost family and the owners and staff spoiled us rotten. We loved the room, constant food and snacks were left (a great way to test Japanese snacks) we loved the Maiko/Geisha experience, they were so very beautiful and entertaining. Sano and Mari bent over backwards to keep us comfortable and happy. We as a family of 4 cannot recommend this place enough.

United StatesLoved everything.
The hosts, the unlimited bottled water, the tea and coffee as well as multiple snacks. Also, daily, one came back to fresh fruit cut up and stored in the refrigerator. This was our first trip to Japan and we will have been here for 2 weeks. In retrospect, I realize just how expensive fruit is here and the snacks add up. All this was complementary here. We had an atypical situation where various kids joined us at different times … this did not faze the hosts at all. They were gracious and kind. And then the Maiko (geishas in training) show was outstanding. Not only did they again provide complementary sake and snacks, but I found out from a guide that it is rare for a Maiko to go to anyone ‘s house unless it is an old, established relationship. From the humility and interactions with our hosts, one would never guess their status. Other reviews had posted about curfew … there isn’t one. The front desk is open till 11pm. After this, they have a way to come in a different way. We had a quadruple room which was spacious and comfortable. We also had an en suite bathroom which was remarkably useful esp at night. Sadly, we left here to go to another local Ryokan for traditional meal; well it was a mistake. I recommend kyoto ryokan Gion Sano unreservedly.
