The house was very traditional but had modern amenities (they even included a washing machine and a hair straightener!), the staff were all super kind and the food (breakfast and dinner) were both delicious true japanese meals. There were two onsen in our room (one inside and one outside) so you could choose which one you preferred depending on the temperature. The ryokan’s location was walking distance to the centre, while there were bars / restaurants / convenience stores nearby where you could pick up anything you wanted. Still, when inside the house you felt as if you were in a very quiet neighborhood - far away from the noise of the city centre. The hotel also offers to help ship your luggage to your next location.

4 of us in a bedroom and 1 shower area was not something we have considered properly when we booked this place. As we need to take turns to shower and wash up although there are 2 toilets. It would be perfect for a group of 2 - 3 , in my opinion.

Peaceful, quiet and very clean. It’s about 8 minutes walk from station and bus station to various places is just across the street. Owner/the manager of the property is extremely nice and polite. He welcomed us with a complimentary tea ceremony and demonstrated how we make matcha tea, which is really interesting for us to learn the tea culture of Japan. He also recommended great local food and markets which only the local go, not the over-rated touristy restaurants. They also checked on us day after we check in to make sure we have a comfortable stay and to check on whether we need anything. Very dedicated team. We opted for the Japanese breakfast and they are really good. Highly recommend this place.

We loved everything. The property is in a super, central location, in a quiet side area. The entire property is traditional and wonderful. Our welcome was great and the hosts were so kind and considerate. We loved the indoor and outdoor baths. The beds were very comfortable. I can’t recommend it highly enough. Everything. I left a detailed review for our first four-night stay already. We booked the accommodation early so were able to extend the stay when we decided to stay in Kyoto for another two nights. We enjoyed the stay throughly - the staff, hotel itself, location, local shops and restaurants, and local neighbourhood. Definitely the best decision we made.

We enjoyed everything. The location, the tradition that the hotel is immersed in, details of every room (such as flower arrangement in the rooms), the baths, one opens window to an outdoor garden, the other on second floor being open air with garden settings. the pottery plates and mugs, above all the most beautiful staff members. The hotel is 5 minutes walk to Shijo Station which is only two stations away from Kyoto Station. Lots of shops and restaurants around, lots of them in traditional buildings. Hotel staff gave great local recommendations- ramen, udon, Hiro barbecue, sweets… we made effort to visit some of the shops twice during our stay- the little udon restaurant run by an elderly couple, Hiro barbecue - great food and lovely people. The list goes on! We are grateful for the beautiful stay - thank you!

It has been my favourite accommodation experience so far in Japan. A traditional 120-year-old house in the centre of Kyoto. Easy walking distance to the food market and great restaurants. A welcome tea ceremony on arrival.

Very quiet spot, traditional older style house but nice fit out with ofuro on rooftop and lots of nice touches with lovely tiles and crockery. Very cosy Japanese style. Mother-in-law aged 75 was happy for the upstairs toilet overnight so she didn’t have to negotiate the stairs as very steep and tricky. Comfy beds, very warm in middle of winter. Two toilets, 1 shower, two baths. Helpful host when we were late and ordered us taxis, gave good dinner recommendations etc. We found the place no problem bc we used a taxi, maybe hard to find from train station but recommend just phone host if you have trouble finding it. 700m to Nishiki market and Daimaru

Heating uses split systems throughout property (I’m personally not a fan due to the dry heat and airflow) - this can be drying, although there was an air purifier with humidifier there that we could have used but didn’t. (Personally didn’t want to add another level of air and noise. We stayed in January, Winter.) The washing machine was a combination washer dryer. Takes hours for a cycle and clothes still a little damp when finished. Just nit-picking here, but we totally enjoyed our stay and what a lovely experience in a traditional property.

Hospitality, communication and service 10/10. We enjoyed the personalised tea ceremony offered to us, thank you. Host was kind and friendly, thoroughly briefing us about property. Loved loved the outdoor bath! Beautiful, clean, charming, traditional property. (Although be prepared for what comes with a 100+ year old place like creeky steep steps). We enjoyed the traditional Japanese dinner & breakfast (I recommend just ordering one each on different days, but only select this if willing to try and accept that this is traditional Japanese!). Property has everything you need and free luggage storage on check-out. Short-ish walk to transport, dining, and shops.

It exceeded our expectation. The property looked and felt as the pictures show. The staff were wonderful and very attentive. A true traditional town house that perfectly matches the Kyoto culture. The property was close to many restaurants and cafes. The Macha tea ceremony was great at our Arrival. A bonus.

Kyiosuke was an overall lovely stay. The staff are incredibly kind and accommodating as well as the rooms are large, located in a quiet area, comfortable and equipped with nice utilities!
