Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United KingdomThe property needs a deep clean, and better maintenance inside and in the grounds. A bit shabby.
Location was great, by the lake. The history of the hotel. The Onsen was lovely and staff we’re very pleasant. Everything was in the rooms that was necessary for a good stay and we loved the robes.

United StatesIf you’re not aware that the location is fairly hard to reach to and don’t have a plan for meals, it might be challenging. But I knew about those things and the stay felt extra special
Honestly everything. It’s not the most modern hotel but to me it has his charm. The traditional bedroom is beautiful and so big. Only 8 rooms in the property so not many people on site, I was almost always alone in the onsen. I recommend taking a walk down the lake from the property and explore. This was such a relaxing stay for me, I loved it.

GermanyUnfortunately, they were not able to accommodate vegetarian food at the hotel restaurant (which we would have loved but did not expect because finding vegetarian food in general is hard in Japan). The hotel's location is super peaceful, but remote, so it is only accessible by car. Be prepared for a drive down a serpentine road if you want to Nikko. It's fast to drive to many hiking spots from there though!
Peaceful little hotel at the lake with its own Onsen. They allowed us inside the Onsen without us having to cover our tattoos, which is not something you can take for granted. The staff was friendly and the room was very clean. The room was super spacious, especially for Japan!

NetherlandsIt is a bit remote and mainly people visit the area during the day so it is great if you know what you are in for. Taking the bus tales some time and the restaurant is on the expensive side and not always open however you can easily walk along the lake to some restaurants and a store at 15-20 min away.
It was the perfect location to explore some nature as you are close to the trailhead up nantai mountain and other parts of the Nikko national park. Also really nice to use the onsen after a days hike and the people were really nice to me.

AustraliaNo breakfast or dinner service, but we made sure to make meal arrangements before heading back to the accommodation each night 😊 staff were accommodating and heated up our meals for us!
Great location, only a minute’s walk down to the lake and there’s a bus stop right out the front. We could see the lake from our balcony and monkeys in the trees in the morning and evening 🙉 Only a short walk back to Chuzenji onsen area for food, supplies or sightseeing activities.

GermanyAs long as you are aware about the bus schedule (last bus arrives around 7 pm, takes an hour from Nikko Station) and relatively hard availability of food (and are fine with both of these "hardships") I can only recommend this hotel. You can book dinner additionally (ask the service staff at the counter). According to reviews the food is great but relatively expensive.
I am honest it is not the best hotel on earth BUT I loved it nevertheless. You can see that it had been a luxurious hotel once and now maybe it is more likely to be booked by backpackers. But really, it was a nice stay. It really depends on what your preferences are. My preferences had been: - offers Onsen and doesn't care about tattoos - near the Senjogahara Marshland (戦場ヶ原 to go on a hike - has a bus station close-by. This hotel offers an Onsen (with its own water spring!) Even for people with tattoos! This was the main reason I booked the hotel. It was worth the trip!! The view over the lake is wonderful. Alternatively there is a really tasty restaurant near-by (20-25 minutes by feet) called "Taro". Fish, meat, vegetarian or even vegan meals are available. It's very tasty there. But be aware that the last bus takes off at 6 pm from Nikko Station, so if you want to eat dinner later then that you will need to go by feet and walk next to the street. Didn't bother me, though. There are machines with instant noodle and other food in the hotel lobby, but probably you should buy something decent in the conbini in Nikko city or at the little super market next to the Taro restaurant.

United StatesIf you're visiting Nikko, and especially the Lake Chuzenji area (or further), I'd highly recommend renting a car. I wish I had known this going in but it's not the most accessible place by foot (although you can make it work). I didn't reserve any meals, and the town was too far a walking distance for nighttime, so I had to hunker down on some cup noodles for the night. The hotel itself had no downsides (but a noticeable sulfur scent in the onsen)
After a long day of sightseeing around Nikko, having the onsen at the Lake Side Inn to go back to was just what I needed. From Tobu station, you can get to the hotel by bus. It sits right on Lake Chuzenji, and many different attractions are within reach. It was my first Ryokan experience and the room was exactly what I had pictured. Tatami mats, roll-out futon, and a nice view. Plus the vending machine in the lobby was a nice touch. Great experience.

United KingdomThere was no sign indicating the name and location of this hotel! You surely want to be found by your English-speaking customers? We only located the hotel by following someone else. We were not aware we needed to order dinner in the hotel’s pop-up restaurant. This was very inconvenient because there is nothing around there! We had to walk half an hour in the rain (and back!) to get a meal. NB when we looked into the hotel’s restaurant there were only two tables occupied! The chef could easily have added a few extra customers. Poor and unwelcoming service…
This property has nice views over the lake at Nikko National park (although the trees could be pruned to show more of the lake)
