Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United StatesBeautiful hotel in a wonderful location. Unfortunately we only stayed one night while traveling back to the airport for our return trip home. Would've liked to stay longer. Dinner and breakfast were delicious!

SwitzerlandLovely ryokan, only a short walk away from the train station and cable car. The food was delicious and the staff were very attentive and friendly. The ryokan is very comfortable and quiet, with nice views over the surrounding hills. The onsen is amazing (there’s even a private one that can be booked for 30 mins in the evening) and overlooks a small tranquil garden.

United StatesNothing, we loved all of it! The property is slightly dated, but in great shape and very clean.
Beautifully presented traditional Japanese dinner and breakfast. Comfy beds, pretty view from our room. The onsens were clean and had a cute little garden area to look out at. Staff was super friendly. When no taxis were available, they helped me arrange a hotel shuttle for my family to the bus stop with all of our luggage, despite the fact that it was a holiday and they didn't originally have someone to drive us. I think they called someone in for us!

United StatesAlthough I was happy to try all the food, it was harder to do this at breakfast when the flavors are strong.
We were willing to try all foods and onsen experiences. Fish is not our favorite but the experience was fantastic and the staff helped us to navigate how to eat the various foods. They also gave us clear guidance on the clothes and baths. It was an experience I will never forget.

CanadaThe towels were very old and thin. The towels could be replaced. During meals it would be nice if the courses were served slower. We found each course was served all at once. Communication to all customers of the intent of the Ryokan. I agree with families staying and being welcomed, but having children running around the ryokan when many guests have come for a peaceful experience is disrespectful.
The staff were amazing and helpful The Neal’s were all well presented and tasty.

AustraliaThe room looks clean but when you look into the details you can see dust on windowsills etc. I saw the stain under the bed sheet.
Dinner and breakfast are very good. They provided a lot of food, and we enjoyed them very much. We had private bath which was very nice and relaxing. The public bathroom is very clean.

United StatesThe interior needs updating. The pillows were very hard and at night there was a green light from the fan that illuminated the entire room making it slightly difficult to sleep.
We loved the Onsen. The food was great but a bit too much for us. The location was amazing and serene. We really loved the accessibility to the cable car and gondola as well as the open air museum etc. It was kid friendly. We traveled with our 10 and 12 year old's and they were treated kindly. We loved wearing the Yakudas provided as well. Tea time in our room was wonderful and the mattresses we slept on were great. I appreciated that they set them up and put them away for us while we ate meals.

RussiaMy wife and I had strained backs after the long flight, so we decided to have a massage. It was a total waste of money (5000ish yen for 40 minutes on the beds in our room), strongly discouraged: my wife got a bit of relief, I got zero, had to wait until we got a great massage for 4600 per hour in Osaka. Not a dislike, but just for information: during the cold season it may be a bit cold in the toilet (we had the same experience in all other hotels too though) and the shower (which is not a problem as the water can be adjusted to very hot).
We had a huge room with beds and tatami mats, and amazing view of the mountain with the snow-covered 大. We stayed for 2 days and all 4 meals were different and amazing. One breakfast included a bit of fruits, yoghurt with granola, another one - an omelette with a sausage and salad (I like traditional food more, but for those who are concerned). We stayed in 3 different ryokans, and I would say kaiseki here was overall the best (specifically we liked japanese snapper). Location was also great as the cable car operated until 18:30ish. Addressing the comments about the uphill climb from the train station - just don't do it! :) You will most probably buy the Hakone pass anyway, so, when you arrive just take the cable car and walk downhill from the first stop. P.S. Hakone pass works for calendar days, so if you stay 1 night you would need a 2-day pass, for 2 nights a 3-day pass. We used only the private outside onsen (30 minutes for free each day), it was great!

AustraliaLalaca is located up a steep hill so may be tough to get there on foot if you are carrying heavy bags.
Staff were polite and helpful, are English competent. Loved the traditional dinner and breakfast and the experience of wearing yukatas everywhere, traditional Japanese public bathing facilities, the outdoor onsen after dinner where you can gaze up at the stars before falling asleep on futons in a tatami room. We had fantastic view of the mountains from our window. Quiet location.
