Hotel Material was a great choice for our family vacation in Kyoto. Very cozy and clean, great staff and location. The only thing that we wished they had was maid service. We don’t know that they didn’t have this which was a surprise. You also have to request clean towels if you wanted them which is something I didn’t want to have to worry about while on vacation. Over all I would stay there again!

Great service, staff and amazing food at the connected restaurant. Staff gave good advice for visiting Kyoto city. And they were able to check us in early. Staff has a great level of english.

Apart from possibly needing a new shower curtain (and really that’s kind of looking for something to pick on), nothing really.

This was a small boutique hotel, so lovely and quiet. Jeronimo, the manager was so so helpful - nothing was too much trouble for him (it was also nice to be able to have a good conversation in English)!! It had a lovely roof top terrace that we would have loved to relax on with a drink but…heh, kids, aren’t fond of ‘relaxing’. Great restaurant just two doors down and a ramen restaurant downstairs in the hotel - so easy to grab dinner at the end of busy days!! Plus my kids got a good kick out of the toilet seat that opened for you as you walked into the toilet.

Clean, comfortable beds, great quiet location. Geronimo was excellent and by far the friendliest and most helpful hotel staff I’ve ever encountered. Ramen shop downstairs was delicious and convenient. Our family of 3 was beyond pleased with our stay here.

There are two 'Materials' in Kyoto so just make sure you go to the right one! We ended up arriving at the wrong location, but staff there were also really friendly and helped us journey plan to the correct place!

This teeny boutique hotel had all the amenities needed for our stay and more! Small touches, like the deck of uno cards in the room, and the friendliness of Jeronimo on the front desk, made Material feel like home. The bed was also the comfiest of our trip in Japan!

All was great!

I liked everything about the hotel. The staff representative was super helpful and nice, helped us to carry the luggage upstairs. The room was fully-equipped and clean. There is a rooftop where you can just chill out. We could leave our luggage for a couple of hours after the check out time, which we really appreciate! Absolutely the hotel to recommend.

Nothing at all

Nice accomodation, very helpful host and the roof top terrace is really awesome for sunset. The Ramen restaurant on first floor and the okonomoyaki restaurant around the corner are quite good. To Gion you walk 10 Minutes and you can reach castle, shopping street quite fast by food as well, bus stop is either close. We really loved the stay there. So we totalley recommend it.

Our room was on the main street side which can be a bit noisy when you open the window

- You can walk easily to Kyoto old town spots (Gion, Pontocho Alley, Kiyomizu-dera Temple) - The hotel is in a nice neighbourhood (Convenience store, restaurants and metro nearby) and has a very charming rooftop terrace to enjoy some drinks with a nice view - The hotel staff is very helpful and kind. They speak very good English. - The room has a very comfortable bed and provides all necessary equipment for a short stay. It has a charming interior and resembles a modern ryokan style room - Although they don’t clean up the room every day, you can ask for new towels anytime

On a busy street so there was some street noise at night.

Excellent hotel with lots of thoughtful details. Location was pretty good, walking distance to Gion and well connected to public transit. Helpful staff and loved the provided pajamas.

Spacious room, rooftop area for guests with great view of the city. Walking distance from train station and bus stops. Had lockboxes for guests to use so keys didn’t have to be carried. Doors locked after a certain time so non guests did not have access providing security. Very comfortable. Staff was pleasant and helpful.
