Honestly not much to dislike, I'd appreciate if the onsen perhaps could get some more maintenance. Not really a dislike but be aware futons are very thin here. You will hurt your back if you aren't used to it.

Nice staff (JP speaking but patient). They went out of their way to serve us local specialities for dinner. Everything perfectly clean and spacious.

Beautifully prepared Japanese breakfast. Extremely friendly and helpful hosts. Real traditional Japanese room ( which in our case it was exactly what we wanted) Private onsen each evening , which was fantastic . Traditional Japanese clothes and slippers throughout stay.

We were staying for two nights so we had the same dinner twice, which was okay but maybe you have to be aware of that. You wash in the public bath, so we didn't have a shower in our room: again here nothing bad but be aware of it.

We had a very pleasant stay in Asogen! The staff was lovely and the food outstanding. Also the public bath was a treat after a day hiking in the rain. It's a basic accommodation with everything you need.

The only downside of the private onsen baths were that there are only 4 available for all guests to shower during a period of time. The private baths close at 10pm sharp. There might be a wait/queue for the private baths.

The room was pretty big, one room for sitting around and eating if needed. They even had heating for the blanketed table while you are seated. The room for sleeping was pretty huge as well. It was a pleasant surprise that they had private onsen baths for showering.

I can only rate this place as 10/10. It's what you would expect from a Ryokan, and more. Specifically, i'd say two things are better than other great Ryokan, the onsen (private suites with windows that can be opened to "transform" the main room into a rotemburo at will) and the kaiseki dinner, where chu-toro, basashi and marbled beef were on the menu. Apart from an extensive sake menu. Other than that, the owners / team managing it are super nice and helpful. Perfect place to enjoy before/after an Aso trek.

The meals here were delicious with ample amounts of Wagyu beef and sashimi. We enjoyed our barbecue experience as we cooked our own meat in our own private dining room. There were many treats as part of this meal. We recommend having the dinner and the breakfast combination. The rooms were spacious, clean and very comfortable. We enjoyed the private hot tubs.

A little inconvenience if all 4 onsen bathrooms are taken, need to wait for your turn. Note that out of the 4 bathrooms, there are 2 rooms with 2 shower heads, and 2 rooms with only 1 shower head. So if more than 2 pax showering together, avoid going to the one with just 1 shower head.

The onsen bathroom was spacious, bigger than some of the private ones we paid at other places. Room was big too. Location was perfect. There is a very very nice dinner place Sakamoto nearby, that serves very exquisite and yummy food with price extremely affordable.
