Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

I really liked the dinner. It was super delicious and a really unique experience. The meal had like 10 different courses and we were offered different drink selections as well. It really felt like the full authentic Japanese meal experience that we were looking for. We also really enjoyed the onsen, it was awesome to be able to have that experience. They were really accommodating to me as well since I have tattoos. I thought that I wouldn't be allowed to go in, but they told us it was no problem.

This place was awesome. We were looking for a place that looked traditional and this one definitely exceeded our expectations. The facility itself looks like a museum, with exhibitions of old weapons and tools in the aisles and windows on the beautiful gardens in the back. The booking included dinner and breakfast and both were amazing. The staff was also super kind and helpful, in the morning they even escorted us to the bus stop in front of the hotel and greeted us when leaving.

AustraliaMy only feedback would be that there is no fireplace, and everywhere but our room was quite cold to wander around and relax in the evening. The breakfast Kaiseki meals were too much for us, but still lovely.
The onsens were gorgeous and clean. Water was so lovely, and I loved the cold plunge pool. The staff were amazing, just so kind and helpful! Kaiseki meals were meticulously prepared and presented and just delicious! Highly recommend

AustraliaIt's a little out of town and the buses aren't too frequent, so you need to be organised with when you want to go out exploring, or take taxis (which are quite cheap).
The meals were fantastic and the service was exceptional. The onsen was lovely and clean and very relaxing. Dining in front of a Noh stage was particularly special.

United StatesThe only recommendation is to add drinking water in the onsen area. There are vending machines outside of the onsen, but you need to dress up, go back to the room to get money to just buy water. This is not only inconvenient, but kind of dangerous because people can get dehydrated and dizzy from the very hot bath. Please take a water bottle with you. And as a note for the hotel owners, consider providing a cooler with free water inside the onsen area. Otherwise, you are impeccable!
This is an incredible experience! Authentic 230 years old ryokan owned for 9 generation of this family. I've never seen more polite, attentive and helpful staff than this. They would take care of your luggages from the taxi and will load it back to the taxi when you leave, clean the wheels, anticipate your needs. The dinner is a fantastic 10+ Japanese dining experience, where you can try a variety of local traditional dishes. You can purchase alcohol too if you like. The 100-year old Noh theater stage is unique, and the owner can give you a tour if you request it. The garden is well kept and beautiful. The ryokan has many little pockets and areas to relax, read a book, enjoy the views on the garden. Quiet and relaxing. You can reach it by taxi, or by train/bus + a short taxi from the local station; trust me it's worth a ride. The ryokan is filled with little details, like ceramics and art pieces, antique artifacts like from a museum. The onsen water has many healing properties (there is a certificate by the entrance with the water evaluation summary). It's coffee colored and considered to be 'beauty spa'. Men and women are separate; no access to the outdoors, but you can see the view on the forest during the day time. There are little massaging machines for feet and back available to the guests for free. The room is traditional style, with all the essentials, amazing green tea. Very impressive experience overall.

United KingdomThis ryokan is an authentic, traditionally Japanese establishment, typically catering to Japanese tourists but this is a positive not a negative! - However, western or non-Japanese visitors may find the sparse use of English throughout making navigating around the premises tricky. You will be shown your room, the location of the onsen and where dinner/breakfast is served but may struggle to remember as the layout can be confusing! A few signs in English and an English translation of the menu would be welcome additions for most!
A delightful stay from beginning to end. As a first time visitor to a ryokan, this stay was exactly what they are famous for. The staff were incredibly welcoming and friendly, some staff spoke English more than others but learning a few phrases of Japanese is most appreciated by the staff and the best way to enjoy your stay. The keiseki dinner was incredible, one of the best meals of our stay in Japan - try everything even if you don't know what it is (or just ask!). The onsen was also delightful - a genuine hot spring, with comfortably hot, dark, mineral-rich water and no unpleasant smells. Everything was was clean and tidy throughout. The room itself was very traditionally Japanese but very spacious and comfortable. I can completely recommend Motoyu Ishiya for a relaxed stay, away from the bustle of the city.

United StatesThe only thing we didn't like was that we didn't have time to stay more than one night.
What a wonderful place for our first ryokan onsen experience! The staff was so welcoming and very accommodating for our lack of speaking Japanese (the woman helping us carried a translator tool). The included kaiseki meals (dinner and breakfast) were outstanding! Our room was quite large. The yukata and futon bedding were neat to experience and very comfortable. Easy access if you are traveling by public transport. The local bus from Kanazawa (can use your JR pass) stops right outside their driveway--they came out to greet us upon arrival and walked us out to see us off.

FranceThe location from Kanazawa meant taxis were necessary. Also, although our family thoroughly enjoyed the food, it features quality, traditional ingredients prepared in authentic Japanese styles. Many western guests will find these dishes are not the kind of Japanese cuisine they’re familiar with. You’ll be rewarded if you eat here with an open mind and sense of adventure.
This ryokan is an historic treasure. You can see and sense the tradition in the common areas and rooms. Incredibly kind and helpful staff. The breakfasts and dinners were incredible.

AustraliaSome of the facilities were dated, the room had a strange smell which I think was an air freshener product from the toilet. The kettle was strange and took a long time to boil. Our power cables kept falling out of the outlets. None of these things would make us not book again but could be addressed if the ryokan were to undergo an update.
The beautiful service was the stand-out at this property. It was a memorable experience for our family to stay in a traditional ryokan, experience the onsen with our children, and the meals were exceptional. We had a spacious quadruple room.
