Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

AustraliaWe thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the property, especially the incredibly friendly and helpful host. She assisted me with luggage transfers and purchasing bus tickets. The property, originally built over a century ago, has been beautifully renovated, providing a charming Japanese ryokan ambiance.

DenmarkThe rooms were inviting, beautifully decorated and so very comfortable. You could really tell that everything had been thought through to make it as warm and bright as possible. Tome was such a warm person, who helped us plan our too short stay in Kyoto, so we managed to see as much as possible. From guiding us on a cycle trip to helping us plan our day, she was a star. The only bad thing about the place was that we did not stay for at least one more day. It was so lovely and an absolute highlight of our Japan trip. When we left, our host even arranged for our luggage to be sent to our next hotel, so that we didn’t have to carry it. As though that wasn’t enough, the host runs her own bar in the garden of the hotel, and if you are up for a chat Tome is a lively conversation partner; for us, it felt like we really got to experience some keen insight into the local life and Japan as a whole because if it. Cannot recommend this place enough!

AustraliaOur stay at the Ryokan Mugen was one if not the highlight of our trip to Japan. Trecking our way from the hustle and bustle of Tokyo, it was a nice walk post rain though the quiet and streets of historic Kyoto. Tome-san was very welcoming of us, ushered us in an provided a well earned drink, she took the time to know our plans and provided great insights to help us plan the days much better and efficient to what we were doing. Tome-san went the extra mile on many things for us, from recommending restaurants and helping us make bookings, luggage service, times and how to visit the attractions, offering free bike rental (umbrellas as well) if needed and of course a nice welcoming drink at the bar in the evening. On to the room, we had the room facing the zen garden, well worth it and the room was perfect for what we wanted to experience, well crafted and every inch from the tatami mats to the wonderful art decor. All up a wonderful place to book if you can, highly recommended if you are wishing to stay in a quiet yet rich Ryokan away from the hustle and bustle. FYI for those that wish to visit the night life of Kyoto, might be worth mentioning this gem is more suited for the experience of a Japanese Ryokan.

United StatesWonderful staff, so helpful and kind and fun to get to know. Lots of great information was shared, they loan you bikes for free, breakfasts were great, they have a great little bar, also an excellent collection of books on Kyoto to help you get your bearings. Close to a lot of beautiful spots, but not in the crazy busy part of town. The rooms are nicely appointed as is the whole royokan. The bedrooms are also on the small side, but that was to be expected as this is a small traditional royokan. Hard to beat in terms of location, value, overall experience with the hosts, who are excellent. Thank you for a truly beautiful stay in Kyoto. I wish I had more time!

The owners are amazing hosts and were a great help planning my way around Kyoto offering many suggestions off the beaten path and were definitely the best part of my stay.
