Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

FranceI think laundry and cleaning must be quite hard. It wasn't dirty but wasn't spotless either. Little stains on the blankets and the occasional hair was found. Nothing major.
It was a real ryokan. That is, you're under the impression you're staying in a family owned traditional inn.

United KingdomIt was good. As a tip for future travellers, maybe leave extra blankets/pillows in the cupboard in case guests want some extra comfort
Traditional old-style ryokan, very well preserved and presented. The room was small, yet they used every inch to its best

AustraliaDoor heights are typically low so watch your head if you are over 1.75m tall! Some parts of the ryokan are a little shabby.
Romanised ryokan, private ensuite bathroom, two tatami rooms in good location close to train line. The restaurant in the ryokan has good food.

PolandIt was a bit cold in the apartment but turning on the AC in the heating mode and a hot bath helped a lot. The sleeping rooms and toilet are on the second floor where you need to get through the steep stairs - it wasn't a problem for us but elderly people may have issues.
Our stay in this traditional wooden ryokan was a fantastic experience! The staff welcomed us and explained the rules. We were given a cute little book where everything was written down very clearly. The interior of our apartment was very traditional but also had all the modern necessities like a fridge, microwave, and all possible kitchen equipment. Futons felt like sleeping on a cloud - definitely, the best sleeping experiences we had in Japan! The bathroom was also typically Japanese and included a shower where you could wash and a bathtub where you could relax. Breakfast was delicious and filling. There is a possibility to store the luggage in the reception for a 1500 yen fee per luggage item. I totally recommend this place!

PortugalThey charge for each luggage if you want to keep it there after check out, which I thought was not very welcoming. Other than that everything was fine. Clean room and bathroom

MalaysiaWe came during transition period between winter and spring. It wasnt too cold but definitely not warm either. So need to keep in mind that the room was not very well insulated. So after a whole day of travelling, coming back to a cold room to rest might dampen the mood.
A traditional ryokan for cheap! Room was decent and have that traditional feeling. Exactly what we were looking for.

United KingdomMy room, I couldn't stand in it without hitting my head. No common spaces, so stay in your room where you can't stand or outside, and it was raining a lot. There is a big area, but guests are forbidden to use it even if empty. I stayed four days and was never given any change of towel or anything else really. Basically, they give you a room, and that's it. The rest is up to you. Almost like a shared airbnb, since there are other two rooms and you hear everything they say or do. Unfortunately, it wasn't a great stay, shame as I wanted to stay in a historical house, but I only stayed in a historical room with low ceilings lol
The neighbourhood, even if far from everything, had some charm.

United StatesCozy, has all the positives and negatives of an old machiya (the entrances/exits to rooms are pretty short, there's one single communal refrigerator, etc). We had an issue with someone smoking but it may have been someone outside and they checked it immediately! They give you very cute guides to everything and the location is fantastic, it was a great place to have as a home base when we visited :)

AustraliaUnfortunately the room I was in had a slanted roof with logs going across it was I was always crouching over or just walking on my hands and knees. Plus EVERY movement I made in the room made the doors shake and creak making a lot of noise.
Being a solo traveler I wanted to experience the more traditional side of Japan and Nagomi-Ryokan Yuu was able to facilitate that for me.

United StatesThe room was super cold at night and it was hard to warm up. I wish we could have interacted with the staff a little more to communicate this issue. We paid for a tea ceremony "class" that was shorter than expected and not really a class since we were not given enough time to read the instructions completely or do anything else than just wisking the tea one time.
The room was nice and the house over all was beautiful. We paid for an outside bath experience and it was super lovely (private and relaxing). The location was good (close to kyoto station and within walking distane to some temples and attractions).

New ZealandThe optional extras like washing machine and baggage storage cost after you check out was very expensive. Maybe ask for an extra mattress if staying as the traditional ones are very thin.
It was nice to experience a traditional Japanese Ryokan and the location was only 15 min walk from Kyoto main train station.

United StatesThe futons were too thin. They were a little too flattened so there were two “mattresses” together. It would be great if they invested in new futon mattresses.
The location was good and we enjoyed being on such a quiet street. Took us a few minutes to realize that the ryokan where we slept was a different place than the building is where you check-in and can eat at the restaurant—that’s around the corner and half a block down—but we loved the simplicity of it, the small garden view from our window, and dinner at the restaurant.

GermanyRooms in Japan tend to be on the smaller side, so with two people each having a big and a small suitcase it was tough to fit everything in, let alone open one big suitcase fully to rummage through stuff. But other than that it was still very good.
Very very kind and helpful staff! Check in and check out was very uncomplicated. When we needed a taxi to get to the station they were very attentive and arranged something for us to get there with our big luggage! In general a good location (had our first dinner in Kyoto at a small izakaya just around the corner) and very pleasant stay. Everything’s was clean and well kept. The futons were comfy and we had no issues sleeping on them. Breakfast was very light and delicious it is served in the restaurant/cafe next to reception and we can only recommend trying it out if possible!

IndonesiaPretty old and small, although clean. But the wall is very thin so noise travel fast and loud. While everything is clean, the futon itself is quite worn down. We also had to pay for tax 200Yen and yukata 300 per person, not sure if this is standard to all other ryokans.
It captures the authentic and traditional Japanese housing well, but a bit too small to our liking. The location is not bad, the staff are polite and quite informative. Overall the stay is adequate. The apartment/ bigger unit is more worth the money.
