Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Czech RepublicThe best accomodation we've been to during our honeymoon in Japan. The hotel staff took great care of us and tended to our every need. The hotel is situated on a hill in a forest, however still nearby a bus stop - which was very convenient. The food was excellent! Diner and breakfast buffets served both japanese and international cuisines. We could choose from variety of great alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. Specialty coffee and tea was available whenever we wished for it. The onsen was beautiful as well! Overall, there is nothing we would have changed during our stay. Highly recommend.

NetherlandsSome of the outside facilities like the seats at the outside seating area were a bit dirty. To be fair it had rained the days before so that didn't help I guess. Also, for my taste the pillows and bed were a bit hard, but this has been an issue across Japan.
The area is absolutely incredible. It's so green, it's so beautiful. The hospitality of the staff and the service is 10 out 10. Even for Japan standards, it's exceptional. The food is also super good and I would 100% come back to this place. It's unreal in beauty. I even saw a deer under my window in my room.

United KingdomEverything was great - the room was large, the bed comfy. The food was fantastic, as was the free coffee and wine. The onsen facilities were also lovely. We had a very relaxing stay and were sad to leave, it felt like a proper hideaway in the hills of Hakone. I was concerned after seeing comments which mention the place needing a lick of paint - but these were unfounded in our experience. The decor all looked great to us.

United StatesI booked Hakone Retreat for 2 nights , i arrived late around 10 pm on May 10th due to traffic. Hotel staff was very nice and considerate to me, they specially prepared the meal-box for me even I arrived way passed the dinner time. The resort offers delicious breakfast and dinner made of lots of choices for guests. Onsen is great ! It even treated my back-pain after bathing in it for two times.

United KingdomWe were asked if we wanted to book for dinner - we decided not to, as it was a set menu only. We definitely would have stayed if there had been an a la carte option.
Hakone Retreat Fore is a really special place. We loved being nestled in the forest, surrounded by the beautiful gardens and abundant nature. The staff came to collect us as we started walking up to the entrance from the bus stop. They were so welcoming and kind. We loved having a glass of welcome wine in the games room! The onsen is really lovely as well, and well equipped. We wished we had booked another night! I highly recommend making this one of your last stops on a Japanese holiday. It was the perfect way to relax after two weeks of sightseeing. Also the breakfast is amazing!

JapanYou should arrive before 6 pm to get full information at reception and a welcome drink. The room was slightly smaller than expected. The onsen baths need some renovation.
The breakfast buffet was varied and everything was delicious. The room and the onsen were comfortable. The atmosphere in the middle of nature was peaceful and relaxing.

This is the most beautiful place we stayed in in Japan. Everything was just perfect: the room, the people, the different spaces to hang out and chill, the sounds, the greenery, and of course - the amazing Onsen. We stayed for 3 nights and could stay three more.

AustraliaThis hotel overall is quite expensive but not sure if that's all the time was due to us staying in Golden Week.
This hotel is truly spectacular. A little hidden gem off the beaten path past Gora. Tranquil surrounds with excellent facilities including complimentary wine on arrival and free barista coffee every morning in the coffee lounge with views of the forest and pond. Incredibly well staffed and everyone was so friendly and accommodating. We were assisted and attended too with spectacular service right from check in to check out. Onsen was simple but very nice, the outdoor bath was a beautiful place to relax after a big day. Overall a very positive experience for us. Great place for a couple to stay at. Couldn't recommend it more.

United KingdomThis place is really lovely. Being in amongst the trees creates a very relaxing environment. The room was a good size with comfy beds and a nice seating area. There was a decent coffee machine in the room as well as a speaker to play music. The big window with a view of the trees was amazing - especially when the deer visit at dusk. Nice and quiet place. Breakfast was delicious and very comprehensive (lots of choices if you want western style or japanese style). All the staff are very friendly and accommodating (especially Ayako). The onsen was nice and I particularly liked that it was open all night as I prefer to use it alone or with few people in. The shared chill out area and games room were something I wasn't expecting but a nice surprise. We made good use of this space and enjoyed the welcome drink - a nice touch. The hotel have electric bikes for hire for a very reasonable rate which we used to cycle to the Botanical Gardens. A few previous guests have commented about the rooms needing a paint but it actually looks like they have chosen a rustic style of decor and it didn't bother us at all. It works with the industrial style of polished concrete in the bathroom. We were also almost put off by previous guests suggesting that the location is too far from anything. In reality it's a 5 minute walk down the driveway to a bus stop and a 20 min ride to Gora where you can connect to most places very easily. We really loved our stay and wouldn't hesitate to book again if we are back in Japan.

AustraliaVariety of meals - my non-vegan companions were offered the same menu every night which meant little choice for longer stays, but that being said the food is a high standard.
Stunning architecture set in a forest. Loved the design of my room with the couch and desk facing the forest, even saw deer and wildlife. Coffee shop and games room are great. They made a special effort to provide vegan meals which was much appreciated. The onsen is beautiful and looks out on the forest.
