Phenomenal location and staff. Enjoyed the free morning coffee. Also loved the fresh tea in my room. Traditional bedding was very comfy. Washer/dryer was available.

Really nothing to complain about. You just have to get used to the fact that rooms in Japan are smaller just enough for a futon bed and your luggage. That’s just the way it is and that’s is fine. :)

Location is perfect. 3 min walk to the Kyoto St. and in the busy neighborhood full with restaurants and bars. Yet hidden in the side alley so you don’t have to be afraid of the noise coming from the outside. Service was very nice and polite. Also, there’s a nice little onsen in the common bathroom in the basement.

It was good value for the location, but there was no “wow” moment. Very basic.

The location is amazing for many restaurants and activities. The train station and buses all come through the station mere steps away. Staff were very friendly and accommodating. Place was spotless!

There is no Free drinkable water, but they sell 2L for 200 yens which is ok. Showers were a little cold when i used then, at spring, so I don't know if they can adjust the heat but in the winter it may be a problem.

Very affordable, extremely well located at walking distance from Kyoto Station and some shoppings and restaurants. Staff very friendly and helpful. Place is old but clean, and gives a really good "traditional" vibe. They kept my stuff safe before checkin, and after checkout.

The location is great, the futons were comfortable, and I liked how personable and friendly it felt to say hi to the ladies running the place whenever we came in and out. The public bath was enjoyable, and I had fun talking to some of the other guests there, but be aware that it is a traditional public bath where everyone is undressed (it's separated into a women's bath and a men's bath). My brother chose to use the single-person shower instead, and there was one of those available downstairs. There were also toilets in stalls on each floor. I enjoyed the traditional feel of the ryokan, and it was easy to walk to Kyoto station to take trains to other areas, and Higashiyama and Kiyomizudera were an interesting walk away.

The only thing I wasn't completely satisfied with were that the pillows were unlike what we are used to. But I understand that this is common throughout Japan so it is just something personal to me.

An absolutely wonderful hotel! The rooms are plenty big and they have all the essentials and more (private toilet & powder room, TV, fridge, safe, private eating area, cheap laundry facilties etc.). It's in an ideal location - right beside Kyoto Station but on a quiet side street so there's little noise. It is spotless, homely, functionally excellent and also presents the opportunity for some fantastic new / local experiences (i.e., the comfortable futon beds, the low-level table & cushions for chairs and the shared shower / bath room - which is, to my surprise, really pleasant whether you're on your own or happen to have company). The staff are so kind and helpful and were just really wonderful to us. They are extremely welcoming and made it a real pleasure for us to stay with them. ** It is important to note though that Nihonkan does have a strict 11pm curfew. Obviously if you're looking to be out late, this is something you need to keep in mind. But the reality is that it's not really an issue unless you make it one. Lastly, the pictures you see online don't do Nihonkan justice. It's a homely, beautiful place to stay and I can't recommend it enough!

You couldn't enter the hotel after 11:00 pm, it has not been a problem since we were always tired from the long day walking.

The Ryokan was old but perfect, located right behind the Kyoto station. I loved the owner attention to the details and really enjoyed the Japanese Bath room. They were really helpful giving me a plate and some soia sauce for a piece of tofu bought in a mini market. Lovely!

The sweetest guest house! Very close to Kyoto main station so easy to get everywhere. The staff was lovely, the rooms are adorable and very comfortable. The onsen was also amazing and very easy to navigate as first time goers. I can only advise you to stay here if you want to know a bit about Japanese culture and tradition.

Curfew was OK for me, but can imagine being a problem for others. Cannot open the window in the room or seeing outside, but I didn't need to.

The common bath is small but unique experience for me.

The staff was friendly and for the price it was really good. I really like the ryokan style of sleeping on a futon in a tatami room and having a public washroom with an already prepared hot bath. I know it's not for everyone. Would visit again if i ever come back to Kyoto.
