Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

AustraliaTranquil oasis! Like staying in my own private apartment with views over a zen garden. Bedroom, living room, large bathroom with TV over bath, and a massage chair! Furnished in traditional style with tatami mats and shoji. Lovely Kaiseki meals. Fantastic location near Shinkyo bridge and Nikko park. Very friendly, helpful staff - especially Arvinda on the front desk. Thanks for a great stay!

Hong KongIt didn't feel as welcoming as other ryokans Older facilities Perhaps because it was Christmas pricing - but felt a bit over priced for the level of service and room quality
Hotel has quite a good location, near the main street and shrines Meals are quite good; meal services were good

United KingdomThe hotel and room in particular were a bit dated and needed a fresh coat of paint or fixup in some places. This didn't necessarily deter from my experience, but it was noticeable.
Included dinner and breakfast were really out of this world. Probably the most memorable meals from my trip. Everyone was very kind, and the onsen area was beautiful. Gorgeous room and overall setting. Would highly recommend this place to anyone visiting Nikko.

the dinner was fantastic - a kaisen set was a delicious 7-course meal and it exceeded my expectations for dinner, and breakfast was overall fabulous as well. the indoor and outdoor onsen were great - not too many people using them so it was nice to have the onsen to ourselves. the tatami room was as expected - the complimentary tea and amenities were greatly appreciated. the location was amazing and very close to the sightseeing destinations. the staff was very helpful.

MozambiqueBreakfast. It is a matter of taste but I chose a Western breakfast and they include soup and salad which is very weird for me. But the worst for me was on my last day, putting me having breakfast in a private room, alone looking at a wall. The best part of my breakfast was enjoying the view of the restaurant each morning. The excuse for having more guests was not a good one. There were tables available, and choosing someone traveling alone to be isolated in a private room in front of a wall was not a smart choice.
The views, the public bath, the room.

United StatesWe booked a large/more expensive room because we didn't understand whether we would have a private bathroom or not in a less expensive room. When we arrived, we realized we got the biggest room in the hotel, and probably didn't need to do that. Might have just been a language barrier issue.
Our room was amazing - we really enjoyed how spacious it was. Very clean - really appreciated how the beds were made while we were at dinner. The ryokan was in the perfect location in town and shuttle service was great.

Conveniently located 5 minutes walking from the Shinkyo bridge and a 15 minute walk from the Toshogu Shrine and Rinnoji Temple, Hoshi no Yado is a wonderful ryokan with exceptional service and amenities. The staff communicated with me before arriving and kindly arranged a shuttle to pick us up from the train station. The dinner and breakfast were beautifully presented and delicious, and the onsen was a nice touch after a long day of hiking. The staff are a very warm and welcoming group of professionals, and even arranged a taxi to take us back to the train station early on the morning of our departure.

United KingdomI have no negatives for this experience
Hoshino-Yado is beautiful and in the best location you could possibly have in Nikko, it’s literally 100 steps away from the Shinkyo bridge that leads to the World Heritage sights including the Toshogu Shrine. The rooms are lovely and the staff are always friendly and available to help. Make sure you at least do 1 day for the amazing Kaizeki dinner and breakfast, I was served a 9 course Japanese meal which had some of the best food I have ever eaten and some things completely new to me, it’s a must do experience for sure. The breakfast was also lovely with an assortment of delicious and new dishes I had never had the chance to try (Nattō was extremely fun, daunting and interesting but very nice) there is also an Onsen which I took a quick peek at but unfortunately didn’t try because I was going to unwind after the dinner but I was so satisfied and full that I fell asleep haha
