Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

AustraliaThe ryokan provides kaiseki dinner and breakfast, which lean heavily towards seafood, as this area is known for its seafood produce. Despite the multiple courses, the meal is very efficient, so you won’t be bored. The meal is already set at your table when you get there and they have a couple of little ‘stoves’ that heat your food up for you. I would have liked our dinner from the first to the second night to be more different, but the breakfasts were different.
The suite we had was luxuriously spacious and had an onsen bath in our bathroom. The room overlooks the beautiful river and gorge. Because we are a family of 4, they set up 2 futons in the tatami mat area, which can be enclosed by shoji screens or left open. The hot water was the most instant I’ve ever experienced in my life. The ryokan provides lots of amenities and if we wanted more, there was a cart in the lobby where we could have helped ourselves. The ryokan has a private outdoor onsen too, which you can book, but we were happy with our in-room one, so did not use it. The ryokan has danjo, senbei and matcha tea making stations open in the afternoon, as well as a snack cart that is popular with the kids. I read reviews where guests complained of stink bugs. The weather was cold, so we kept our room windows shut and there was only one stink bug that appeared in our room on Day 2. I called the front desk and a staff member arrived in under a minute to whisk the insect away.

SingaporePractically non-existent service. Almost everything was DIY. We had to collect your yukatas, towels, toothbrushes, socks and even tea bags from the lobby to bring to our room each day. They don't even clean the room and reset the room to its daytime layout unless you request for it before 11 am each day. The tissue holder in the toilet had a thick layer of dust. It is the first Japanese room we stayed in where the tokonoma was bare. Food was below average. If like us, you stay for 3 nights, they serve you almost identical dinners and breakfasts every day. Dessert was served in a paper cup and the same every day. The food we were served (see our photos) was nowhere as nicely presented as those shown in the booking website. Plates were not cleared and you end the meal with lots of empty plates, bowls, shells and fish bones all over the table. There were no varied tea snacks in the room each day as you had to go to the lobby to grill your own dangos and senbeis. Good at most for a one night's stay as the service level was very poor.
It was nice to be able to book private baths for free each day. The room had a lovely view of the river. There is a free shuttle bus service to and from the Kago Onsen JR train station. It is a short walk to the town centre through a picturesque pathway near the river. It is also close to the start of one end of the river gorge walk which was the best part of Kago Onsen in our trip.

AustraliaWe had a mix up with our booking which wasted a bit of time at check in, but the staff handled it professionally. The outside of the building is in need of repair in some places.
We had a suite with the private onsen which was fantastic. So peaceful, relaxing and romantic. It was expensive at nearly 70,000 yen (approx $700 AUD) per night and we stayed two nights, but the experience was totally worth it. If you can, definitely get this room. The little town of Yamanakaonsen is only about a 15 minute walk and has a convenience store and other gift shops. We found a lovely spot down by the river. The staff were all excellent, as I have found in all Japanese hotels, but I want to make a special mention about a young Indonesian lady (Sushi) who waited on our table. She explained the extensive menu in Japanese to my Japanese wife and again in English to me. Her bubbly personality was a delight. The food was outstanding, top quality and plentiful. Overall one of the best hotel experiences I’ve had. The onsen in your room overlooking the river and forest was just perfect.

United StatesWe loved the simple luxury of Ohanami Kyubei — our room was elegant and comfortable and we enjoyed sleeping on the futons and sitting out on the balcony. We also appreciated the multiple onsen options, especially the private outdoor baths with views of the gorge and of the sky. All of the staff were exceptionally gracious and helpful and we felt very welcome. The breakfasts and dinners included were delicious and extravagant and varied with each meal. We also liked how easy it was to visit other places in the area through Canbus and through the hotel’s free shuttle to Kagaonsen station. We would love to return, and would highly recommend staying at Ohanami Kyubei for a restorative and romantic vacation.

AustraliaWould like to have been able to be picked up by shuttle bus earlier in the day (say 10 am) as we were travelling from Kanazawa- only 30 minutes away. We would have liked to leave our luggage and walk the gorge and the town before checking in at 3pm (say).
Loved the private bath, large room, the dinner and breakfast. Beautiful walk along the gorge. Had a wonderful break here.

United StatesYamanaka onsen had been in down turn a while so they couldn't spend enough month to maintain the hotel in the excellent condition especially outside of the building. Once a stream of guests comes back after the pandemic I hope they would clean up outside of "roten-buros" cutting down weeds and low bush.
Since not so many guests during weekdays I could enjoy a "roten-buro" (outdoor bath-tub) out of three for 40 min alone. Also it's located upstream of the river almost at the end of the row of onsen ryokans, which is quieter and surrounded by nature.
