Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

South AfricaI could have used an extra pillow to support, but otherwise everything was amazing and truly authentic Onsen experience.
We absolutely loved the location- tucked up in the mountains in Ohara. So peaceful and quiet. Soaking in the hot springs looking at the overhanging Cherry Blossoms was a highlight. The food was also great, and huge portions.

AustraliaThe tatami is not comfortable like a bed, but is to be expected with a ryokan stay.
Set in a wonderful part of Ohara in Kyoto. The drive fron Kyoto was scenic and beautiful. The Onsen Ryokan was clean and the services, especially around mealtime was really good. Food was delicious! We also enjoyed wearing the yukata around the property.

SpainFish and raw eggs for breakfast are something you will need to adapt to, not easy for Europeans
Ohara is a beautiful country town, the Onsen is placed in an ideal place to retreat from cities. It felt like a real traditional place and they allowed me to bath even if I had tattoos. Otherwise the rooms have futons and are very confortable. They also provide a dinner and a breakfast with fresh products. I felt that my energy was completely restored after the trip, and all the experience was very humbling

PhilippinesAmazing stay. Actually wanted to cancel the remaining of my osaka and tokyo trip and just relax here. Definitely worth the price. Breakfast and dinner is served (delicious 👌🏼) it’s not too crowded. You can experience traditional Japanese. The short walk from the bus station to the place adds up to the experience. Special thanks to Youshun for attending to our needs. We did not need to ask. He has the initiative to provide us with what we need. Very friendly and considerate 💯😊

BelgiumDespite it probably being a result of it being a traditional style room, the walls were very thin so it’s not suited for loud activities.
Dinner and Breakfast were nice, the staff was helpful and friendly, location is beautiful. We reserved a timeslot in the private onsen, which was nice, but went to the public one after and preferred that one. In the evening we were the only ones in the public onsen and they were very beautiful and relaxing. The rooms look very traditional and the yukata was a nice addition.

FinlandThe rooms have no private bathrooms. There was only 30 minutes time to eat the breakfast, 8:00 - 8:30. Check-out time was also very early, at 10:00. Not suitable for people who like to sleep longer. The location is a bit far from the center of Kyoto.
The room and facilities were very clean. The bath was very nice, there was also option to rent a private bath. Hot pot dinner was good.

United StatesOur stay was too short and had to say goodbye to the amazing staff... Cannot wait to go back *AGAIN*... in short, NOTHING to dislike!
Serene and peaceful it was a beutiful chance to get away from the city to enjoy nature and relax/unwind. Staff was amazing and went above and beyond our expectations. The food was simply amazing and was delicious. Dor dinner it is a Shabu Shabu style of dining and my family and friends loved it. All the ingredients were freshly prepared and delicious. Breakfast was a traditional style Japanese fare and again very *FRESH*... Love the Koi pond and garden right outside the dining room.

TaiwanThey provide a shuttle to/from the bus station, but only after check-in and before check-out. This is inconvenient if you want to have time to walk around and explore Ohara (there are beautiful temples very nearby). Also, the cafe with the onsen footbath is only open on weekends.
Staying at this ryokan was one of the highlights of our whole trip in Japan! Tucked away in the countryside just outside of Kyoto, it's the perfect respite from the hoards of tourists in the city. The ryokan itself was very clean and comfortable. The staff were very friendly, and were able to accommodate our dietary restrictions (one of us was vegetarian, and another was gluten-free). The onsen is beautiful, with a great view of the trees. We all had a wonderful time here.

DenmarkBreakfast is only from 8-8.30 o'clock. Unfortunately we missed it as we had to catch a train early in the morning. Maybe it could start a little earlier, that way we could have taken advantage of that. Anyways, we did not ask if this was possible (maybe it was).
The place is located in a dreamy area an hour from Kyoto station and with easy access by public transport. It is beautiful and simple, it has a very pretty garden that you can see from the window when dining in the restaurant, Japanese style and tatami floor in the room, also the bed is typical Japanese that we made ourselves. The onsen was a nice experience too (foreign-tattoo friendly), good opening hours so you can enjoy before or after dinner. We also booked the private one so we could enjoy together, as the onsens are typically segregated by gender. Dinner was amazing, a hot pot with veggies, meat, tofu and udon noodles that you cook yourself (very typical in Japan). We enjoyed it very much.

SwitzerlandIn order to get expectations straight, this is a regular bath house, not a volcanic hot spring or an aquapark. The bath is nice and warm, but nothing more than that. One negative thing was that there was dust in some places, especially around windows.
The food was amazing. Well presented gigantic portions of traditional meat, fish and vegetables. The place was quiet, and surrounded by a really nice forest. I recommend going to the waterfall, it is a really nice walk. The building itself is charming, and so is the garden.

AustraliaA little overpriced for what it offered (but it was golden week) No service to prepare futon during dinner, There was no small seat or chair in the room, just a thin cushion (zabuton). I think visitors from overseas would appreciate a little more comfort in regards to seating options in the room.
The room aesthetic was so typically Japanese, neat and clean, and was set in beautiful surroundings. The onsen was great as usual…. Meals were amazing..

United StatesNothing really to complain about. It is a Japanese custom to enter their onsen without any tattoos or clothes so I was a little uncomfortable at first but can't complain about that. The sleeping situation was also on futons so it is a little uncomfortable but once again it is something you have to expect going into this stay!
They were very friendly and accommodating. The dinner and breakfast were very tasty and filling and the room was very clean. They provided bikes to go around the city at a small fee and the onsen was so relaxing.

United StatesWe love the traditional, rustic atmosphere and Japanese meals at the onsen. On the night we stayed, about 80% of the guests were Japanese. The temperature at their onsen is not as high as what we had at another place, in a good way, we liked it being on the cooler side.
