Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

TaiwanLoved this comfy and cozy stay. The hotel and the rooms exceeded my expectation. You can tell the owners put effort into the decor and sweet unique details throughout the place. It's a Japanese-style traditional accomodation with modern touch throughout. I loved it and would recommend to my friends if they were going. The staff spoke good English and was very friendly.

Our first stay at a ryokan and it was great. We had a Japanese style room and enjoyed the experience. Japanese style dinner and breakfast were taken in the main dining room and was a really unforgettable experience. The menu was in English and it was really appreciated as we could then identify the different elements of the delicious food - the staff were so lovely and caring. A great stay.

A very good ryokan, a staff that welcomed us and explained all the facilities, we got a yukata (traditional dress), the dinner was very good with an aesthetic presentation and lots of small and tasty dishes. Nice onsen.

PortugalAbsolutely amazing! Our best experience in Japan! The ryokan is so well let and well decorated, and everyone was very accommodating and kind. The onsen was also great and breakfast was delicious. I would come to Takayama again just for the chance to stay here again.

Amazing and unique Japan experience! Very nice room, very friendly, English speaking staff (which is not very common in Japan), a lot of small details that made our stay even better (Japanese tea and biscuites in the room, onsen, kimono, slippers, cosmetics accessories …) and delicious breakfast - Japanese or Western stlye, they can even arrange gluten free option.

BelgiumIt is not in an optimal location-a bit far from the center and surrounded by concrete buildings. Also dinner was good (and not cheap) but we felt very rushed through the experience. The dishes were coming every five minutes and we got a strong feeling that we were meant to finish quickly.

United KingdomAbsolute must stay! So pleased that we stayed at Asunaro and couldn’t recommend it more - service, facilities and location are all fabulous. Go and enjoy it. Communication was excellent before arrival - very kind helping us with dinner recommendations. Night we stayed was chef night off but if you can eat here, do so. On arrival we were greeted by the owner who is just about the kindest, most jolly woman we have met (which is saying something as this has been our experience everywhere!). Super informative check in which included being able to pick our robe for the stay. Stunning selection. Our room was amazing - huge! Spotlessly clean and extremely quiet. Fantastic to sleep in traditional beds. Two way air con so when chilly heats up very efficiently and vice versa if too warm. Onsen - spotless and great to have the on site facility. Great location - everything within 15 minute walk and station especially close (7 mins away). Finally, breakfast was delicious. So disappointed we didn’t pick Japanese (we were in a rush as I picked an early train) so do recommend you try that. Small but big point… coffee was amazing, serious bean to cup machine which is so welcome! Fantastic stay in a beautifully preserved, very traditional (with handy touches) ryokan!

United StatesNone that we can think of!
The whole place is so cool! Cannot imagine staying in a 200+ year old ryokan. The staff were super nice and accommodating. They responded to our inquiries on several occasions promptly. On our day of arrival, we were delayed due to train issues and also late to our booked kaiseki dinner. We informed them, they responded immediately and reassured us it was ok. Dinner was served late after we settled in and if you haven’t had any kaiseki dinner before, you got to try it! So much preparation and thought was put into it and variety of food and presentation were Wow! What an amazing experience! Japanese breakfast the next day was awesome too! Our only regret is that we stayed only for a night. Till next time!

United StatesHonestly nothing to complain about. Maybe could have been a bit closer to the old town but we didn't mind walking. We never tried the shared baths so I can't comment on those but I'm sure they were nice.
We really enjoyed our stay at Ryokan Asunaro. It is just a short walk to the morning market and not much further from the old town. It's also fairly close to the train station which is nice. The atmosphere of the hotel is very cute. The staff was very welcoming and our room was spacious, clean, and comfortable. I highly recommend you sign up for dinner for one night of your stay. The traditional Japanese style dinner was delicious and the presentation is adorable. This was one of our favorite Ryokan meals during our 3 week stay in Japan. Breakfast was also very good. We did both mornings of Japanese breakfast. Each time the food was a bit different and yummy. They offer American breakfast as well which looked good on other peoples tables.
