Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

I didn't have breakfast but very nicely served green tea and Japanese cake on arrival. The address a bit tricky but location in a sweet narrow little street with a lot of action in all directions; Ryokan itself quiet and peaceful; pretty room, attentive mother/daughter in charge. Easy walking distance to station/bus stops etcetera.

SingaporeGoing outside of the room to use the toilet was quite cold during the time we were there. Plugs were far away from the bed, not helpful when we needed our phone alarm to wake us up. For the shower rooms, one of them is shower only, so do not use the bathtub in there! We learnt about it a bit late (after one of us took a bath in it) and ended up upsetting the hosts (sorry about that!) Do make sure to clarify with the hosts which shower room is for which purpose so that you don't make the same mistake!
Host was extremely courteous and helpful. Location was quite good, being close to kawaramachi. Room was quite spacious for two people, able to fit our big luggage. There was a small garden outside our room (we were on the first floor), and it was extremely beautiful to be in, a great environment indeed!

IndiaThe toilets are not heated and a bit cramped, hence little uncomfortable. You have to access the upper floor through a very narrow staircase, and you will find it extremely difficult (nearly impossible) if you have large suitcase.
The authentic ryokan experience with a warm and courteous host. Location is fantastic with bus/ subway station within 5 minutes walk.. very neat and clean with comfortable and traditional bedding and shower

FranceNice authentic Ryokan located in a very central location from which you can easily reach by walking or transportation all the main tourists attractions of Kyoto. The neighbourhood also has many nice restaurants and bars. Last but not least, the owners were very nice and friendly!

DenmarkThe communication was bad about the baths. We were unsure about when we could take a bath and also if the owner would run one for us. One of us took a bath and unknowingly either upset or offended the owner because she said it was only shower (but there was a bath in the bathroom?) we had also read the owner would prepare a bath, but there was limited information about this. All in all, we had no idea how it worked. The beds were hard to sleep on (part of the experience we’d say though) and the walls are very thin. Another guest unfortunately snores very loud and we could hear it very clearly from the other room.
Traditional Ryokan with a very friendly host. Almost too friendly! We enjoyed the experience but personally was glad it was only 2 nights, as it is an alternative experience. All and all a great time at the Ryokan :) the location is fantastic and close to many great and interesting places in Kyoto.

FranceThat I only stayed two nights! If you don't like traditional accomodation this is probably not the place for you.
I had a great stay at the Ryokan Nakajimaya. Location is perfect to explore Kyoto, and has a lot of nice restaurants around. The room is very spacious and comfortable. The hosts very extremely helpful, and helped me organise the shipment of my luggage to the airport. You can make your tea in your room. Wifi (newly setup) worked perfecly fine to organize the rest of my trip and do video calls. Thanks very much, I would definitely come back!

AustraliaIt was the perfect first time experience in a ryokan. It was very clean and relaxing, and the hosts are the sweetest people. As soon as you enter, you’re immediately surrounded by a soothing environment, exactly what you want when staying in a ryokan in Kyoto. Would definitely come back again.

United StatesBath hours weren't well communicated, so we were only able to use the showers. Not a problem for us, but could be a drawback for some. Air conditioning also had a bit of a strange smell when starting. Internet reception was terrible.
The two women who ran the ryokan were absolutely lovely. Language (english) was a bit of a barrier, but they were patient with us and very helpful. Very well located.

SpainI recommend you to carry mosquito repellent, not only for this ryokan but for Kyoto in Summer in general.
Traditional ryokan, run by 2 lovely ladies. Staying here feels like being inside an old Japanese film, in the best sense. Big room with all the basic amenities, they also provide a yukata. The inside patio is small but tasteful. Very good price-quality relation. Good location in Gion. I stayed in other ryokans with similar or higher prices, but I liked this one the most.

IrelandThere isn't much to say here to be honest.
Location was perfect for us as there is a lot of places of interest to eat nearby and good transport connections. The people who run it are very sweet and we enjoyed our time interacting with them. The experience was a very different to the other hotels we stayed at. It was a welcome change to staying at yet another hotel. There is stricter rules staying here, but we didn't mind these, once you understand and are happy with these then you should enjoy your stay here.

LatviaIf I had to say something less positive would be the curfew at 11pm, but honestly after a day of walking, a person wants to be home at that time.
Great location, right near to the food market and several subway/bus stations which are needed to visit far away temples. Very clean with friendly ams kind host. Comfortable mattress. Towels, shampoo and shower gel provided.

AustriaTruth is I debated whether I should share widely my laudatory comments about a gem of a ryokan I was not expecting to come upon in the heart of the city. While I am certain similar places can be found by the dozen, I doubt there are many more where one can fully enjoy the true experience of Japanese lifestyle in a 100-year old traditional house ran by a charming young octogenarian. Do not expect anything flashy: the beauty, here, is in the simplicity and authenticity of the decor. All six rooms are lined with tatami, which you will find surprisingly pleasant to sleep on thanks to comfy top and bottom futon. Although there are Western showers, you may prefer relaxing in a furo available on request. The ryokan is located on a side street, about half a mile away from the subway and bus stops, with many decent eateries and bars in the vicinity.

AustraliaIt is a traditional Japanese house so some of the facilities may be foreign at first glance. The hallways are a bit small and the ceilings a tad low so the tall traveller should be careful.
The owners were extremely kind and accommodating, trying their best to speak English and making you feel comfortable. It felt as if you were staying at a homestay, and you were given very much an authentic Kyoto experience. I enjoyed the hospitality of the owners and the opportunity to wear yukata, enter a Japanese bath, drink matcha with sweets etc.
