I wish the sento was a bit cleaner as the hot tub water was a tad dirty but everything else was fine.

I liked how friendly the hosts were, and how spacious the room was. The quality of the room and bathroom were better than I was expecting and I love that they provided yukata, slippers, and a tea pot.

We liked how clean, quiet and traditional everything looked and how nice and accommodating are the staff. We liked the breakfast they served as well. We really enjoyed our stay and also we really enjoyed walking around Kyoto.

The owners were incredibly pleasant and helpful even though I can't speak Japanese very well! It felt like a truly authentic ryokan experience with a beautiful tatami floor room. Great size as well. Plus breakfast in the morning was an excellent treat!

Small nitpick maybe. You have to be back before midnight. So keep that in mind if you plan on staying out longer

only hooks on the walls, no hangars

Staff very friendly, room was spare, but clean & comfortable. Quiet location in a narrow street, walking distance to Kyoto Train station, local restaurants, bus stops. Fresh towels & robes daily, traditional breakfast.

Loved this Ryokan! The futon was so comfortable to sleep on and the Japanese style room was really cool. I also enjoyed the breakfast and the Japanese style bath. The location is close to Kyoto station, around 10 mins walk with luggage. There’s also nearby shops and restaurants. The staff were so lovely and friendly, I really enjoyed my stay!

Incredibly friendly staff, lovely breakfast and the location was also great (close to Kyoto station, but still in a quiet neighbourhood). The traditional rooms was the highlight of the stay though. Fantastic!

Couldn't find a towel hook or hanging area when using shower and sink.

Breakfast was delicious, staff were super friendly. The public bath is reservable for private use at times. Futons were comfy

It's difficult to complain about this location. If I had to really try, I would say that the restroom will not meet your expectations if you are expecting something modern similar to a hotel. It feels more like the restroom at your house.

Great for those who want to experience ryokans at an affordable price. The kind staff was fantastic and went out of their way to explain the available amenities in English.

The owners were extremely nice. They offer breakfast and daily room cleanings. They even gave us some advice on places to visit in the city. And when we were ready to leave they gave us some souvenirs and took our picture. I highly recommend this Ryokan.

Very nice staff. Gave lots of local entertainment options. Made a great effort to keep the grounds quiet for all guests. Very nice breakfast. Option to reserve the bathhouse for a private bath. Good location away from high traffic areas. Comfortable room.

Shimizu ryokan is extremely close to Kyoto station so it's a central local. It's a 20-30 walk and/or (crowded) bus rides away from Nishiki market, or Arashimaya, Ginkaku-ji or Kiyomizudera temple. So planning is crucial in order to not have a hectic day.

Room for 2 was spacious with its own bathroom and shower, air conditioner, TV and a kettle (which was surprisingly useful). The futons are warm and very cushion-y. They have a decent size sento on the 1st floor, that you can reserve for private use from 6pm-10pm (I believe). The Japanese breakfast they prepare (included in room payment) is all around fantastic! And of course the owners, they show us the Japanese'.incredible hospitality, warmth and kindness. Although we want to explore and stay in other parts of Kyoto in the next visits, I'd love to spend even just a night at their place again.

The staff were super friendly and made our stay even better. They even gave us a free umbrella when it was raining on the day we left. The breakfast was also really good. I would very much recommend this to anyone interested in a traditional Rykon experience.

Everything was great - would have been nice to have a small lamp in the room for an alternative to overhead light but not a must!
