Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Yamashiroya is a lovely retreat in a small village away from the tourist hotspots like Yufuin or Beppu. If you are looking for a place with nothing then flush green hills around this is the place to go. Take it as an experience as the exceptional friendly hosts will welcome you to their house, treat you to fantastic food and relax in the wonderful private baths before/after. Foreigners and especially Singles are also welcomed, which is another big plus! Explanations of the facilities and the different dinner/breakfast courses are provided in English.

MalaysiaLow water pressure in one indoor onsen. Other onsen are excellent!
We are 6 friends from Malaysia and was our first visit to Yunohira, a little onsen town. We are thankful to choose to stay at Ryokan Yamashiroya. The host is very responsive to our queries before our trip and during our stay. After we parked the car at the allocated parking lot, the host fetched all of us to the ryokan on a narrow road and this save our energy lugging our luggages to the ryokan. We enjoyed our stay in the spacious and clean rooms plus the few private onsen were a bonus to us! We also enjoyed the sumptous dinner and breakfast in a private room with wearing the yukata for photos. Upon our checkout, the host fetched all of us back to our car. Highly recommended!

AustraliaIt’s not a bad thing it’s just we aren’t used to the hard wheat pillow so didn’t use it for sleeping. The mattress is nice and comfy I was able to sleep soundly without the pillow but I miss having a soft pillow.
Hosts were super friendly and able to communicate smoothly in English. Food was excellent. I like how quiet it is and the room is very comfortable. It was freezing cold in the outdoor onsen at night but as soon as I am in the onsen it was fine and I loved it. We walked through the cobblestone streets nearby and got some nice photos. There’s not much to do in the surroundings but allows you focus on resting.

Hong KongIt’s a bit remote but for us it’s just fine because we prefer to stay in a quiet place. Part of the decoration is old and starting to fall apart but nothing would affect your comfort.
The hosts were very kind and friendly. The food was one of the best I’ve taken in Japan (consider I had plenty of business trips in Japan before and attended a lot of banquets hosted by large corporations). The onsens were very comfortable. The room was quiet and cozy with beautiful views of the surrounding mountains. We also like the decor and the collection of vintage items. Very surprised to find out that the old analog phone in our room was still working! After all, we felt at home in this ryokan because the hosts serve their guests with all their hearts. Will definitely come back.

MalaysiaNothing. I like everything.
I like everything about this Onsen Hotel. The hotel is very nice and warm. We have a warm welcome from the husband and wife who manage this hotel. Due to the hotel is located at down hill and the road in front of the hotel is super narrow, the husband drive his car to help carry our luggage while we have our Alpha park at the hotel parking at the side roads. Both husband and wife help us to carry the luggage up to our rooms and explain in details about the 'yukata' and room/hotel facilities. The rooms we slept also is super neat, tidy and warm. Our rooms are come with the toilet. For the bathroom, is actually the Onsen area. If u wan to take the bath, just check which Onsen rooms are available and lock it to have your private Onsen session. So this is definitely suit our needs cause we are too shy for using public Onsen. Last but not least is their dinner and breakfast. The foods are very delicious and ready on time for us.

Located in isolated Yunohira station, this ryokan gave us feeling of solitude and privacy. When we first entered, we felt like we were in some Ghibli’s movies. The owners took care of us very well with heart warming accommodation. The ryokan has 4 hot springs which are well maintained. We spent a great long time in the hot springs during the snow and it was the best experience ever. Moreover, the food they served us here were plenty and super delicious.

Though the location is a bit off centre, this family run Onsen Ryokan exceeded my expectation and delivered good quality food (both dinner and breakfast) and is good value for money. 4 private onsens are available for guests (2 open and 2 indoor). All are maintained at excellent condition. Rooms are spacious and spotless clean. Free parking is available but it is located at the roadside while the Ryokan is at around 50 meters downhill in the village. I parked the car at the hotel parking lot first and walked down to the Ryokan to check whether we needed to carry the luggage downhill, the host was very kind to drive a van uphill (just 1 min drive) to assist loading and unloading our suitcases.

SingaporeWe stayed in the annex and we had heavy suitcases. Lugging them up the stairs is challenging. The town it is in is very small. Walked around in the morning and didn't see much activities. But I wouldn't mind going back to the area just to stay in the ryokan. Hopefully the town will get a revival.
Dinner and breakfast were very delicious and homely. The ryokan has a retro feel but there are many modern features. The tv in the room allows us to check if anyone is using the family bath. We were able to enjoy the onsen twice during our one night stay. Although there is no shower in the room, it is easy to just go to any available family bath where amenities are provided. The room we had in the annex was huge. Futons were laid out in the bedroom and we could use the living area for our suitcases and lounging around. The owners were very kind. I bought two packets of their sweet miso and didn't realize that I had forgotten to take them until I reached the next prefecture. The owner helped to arrange to send them to another accommodation.

United StatesThe location in Yufu is exceptional. You feel transported into an old Japanese movie with winding streets along mountain streams and rice fields all around. Old style buildings, quiet, and traditional countryside hospitality. The owners were so helpful going above and beyond our needs, and directions to where to park clearly explained in a video sent ahead of time. The food was excellent: fresh fish, meat, and vegetables all locally gathered. Spacious room with tatamis. Comfortable beds. Yufuin is very close as are Mount Yufu's trails. Excellent command of English.

SingaporeNothing to complain of. If I was to complain, it would be that their facilities were much better than the big brand hotels. Seriously, their TV came with a keypad which operated as the ceiling light controller too! Best of all, the TV channels subscription were more too! My friend and I were totally spoilt after staying in Ryokan Yamashiroya. We totally miss Ryokan Yamashirota and their friendly lady boss and boss.
Ryokan Yamashiroya is a good example of home-managed ryokan which I love whenever I travel to Japan. Very personable service, friendly, helpful, best home-cooked meals with the freshest ingredients and most of all - feeling home away from home. I booked a half board stay for 2 nights. My friend and I totally enjoyed every single meals - simple yet so flavourful with the freshest ingredients. We could feel the sincerity and the amount of efforts Ryokan Yamashiroya put in every mornings and evenings during our stay. As a matter of fact, my friend and I who hardly eat carbs, emptied our rice during our meal time 🤭 The lady boss was very helpful and yes, she could converse in English. And the boss was also very helpful to help me drive my rented car up to the main road twice as I was not confident with single lane driving (road sharing is common is Japan; especially rural areas) On our last morning after a delish brekkie, the lady boss even helped me to check the road condition to Mt ASO as my rented car wasn’t fitted with snow tyres. With her approval and blessings, off we went to Mt ASOS with a bag of sliced pear which lady boss helped me to cut. Thank you, lady boss and boss of Ryokan Yamashiroya for taking such good care of us!❤️

United StatesNothing! People driving in large cars may not be able to make it down the narrow road to the property, but there is overflow parking a short walk above.
Breakfast and dinner were very elaborate and delicious- some of the best we had in Japan! The staff were very friendly and helpful. Our room was large and comfortable with thoughtful touches, like a video on how to use onsen. It was nice to be able to reserve private onsen for our family, especially since I have a tattoo and cannot use public ones. The onsen were beautiful, well maintained, and always available.
