Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United KingdomThe one thing that lets this place down is the location, it is a bit inconvenient to get to if you're staying in Kyoto. It was difficult to figure out what bus we had to get from Kyoto station to get to the ryokan, and it took about 50 minutes by bus. It's much further out of the city centre than I initially thought.
I liked the traditional and homely feel of the Ryokan, it didn't feel like a hotel, it felt like someone's house. Whether or not that's what your after is subjective of course. Personally, I loved the homely feel of the place. The garden was also beautiful. The bath house was located outside and you had to exit the building to get to it. Was a little inconvenient but a lovely little bath house nonetheless!

AustraliaWe were a bit disappointed to learn that the one night we stayed, on a Sunday, the onsen was not available. However, we still enjoyed our time.
The Ryokan was lovely to stay in. It was a little further out from Kyoto's centre but we enjoyed the quiet. We opted in for a room upgrade when arrived and checked in. The staff was very accommodating and friendly.

United KingdomIt wasn’t convenient to get to and from Kyoto city centre to the ryokan and it could just have been my room but there was a distinct smell of cat litter or something in my room. It could have been mould but it smelt like a pet shop or a hamsters cage. I also wouldn’t recommend sleeping on a futon. Extremely uncomfortable and the pillows provided are awful, but luckily sheets & bathrooms etc are clean
The property itself was quite remote and far from Kyoto centre so it does offer an element of tranquility

NetherlandsThe bugs like warm rooms as much as you do in the winter.
The staff was very nice and were quick to help whenever anything came up. The futon was comfortable and warm, makes me wish for one for myself. The property was far enough away from the city center that I had no trouble finding a seat on public transport and there weren't many other tourists.

United StatesThere was a quite strong wood/moss smell in the room, we were tired from our trip so we didn't mention it immediately. The next day the owner said the rooms were remodeled recently so it could be that.
The food was good and a great value for the money. The garden is beautiful and room clean. The Staff is very nice and helpful.

It provides a great feel of old school japan but is very limited on confort, if solo you have shared bathroom vacilities 2 toilets with one shower,. When ordering breakfast it was not informed that it would be served in the resturant, so was cold when investigating. Not lose to any landmarks but they are a bus away. second time i have stayed there tho so worth a go, all the floor sitting and stuff is a nice change and feel

JapanI think we have nothing to criticize.
I was traveling together with a friend and she preferred to book a place a bit outside of the city. The place is still very accessible by bus (stop is almost in front of the house), or even the tram if (you don’t mind a 15 minutes walk). The staff was very kind and welcoming and you will easily get along with English, if you don’t speak Japanese. The rooms were tidy and comfortable and would also recommend to take the Japanese breakfast in the house. Cannot judge the dinner since we usually returned late and ate somewhere else. Highly recommend the ryokan!

United StatesMy only issue is that it's kind of out of the way from everything else. Minimum 30 minute bus ride or taco from the shops and major station
I loved how calm and quiet it was. The room was super comfortable and very cozy. The staff were very nice and really helpful especially with me losing my passport and them assisting me with the next steps after realizing what happened

JapanIt was quite far from the centre of town (but I expected this and I drove, so that wasn't a big deal). The pillow was a little hard and had beans in it (but I think that this type of pillow is quite standard in many hotels in Japan, so maybe I have to get used to it).
The area was very peaceful and quiet. The futons were comfortable and the room was clean. I came by car and I was able to use the car park for free. I like exercising, so I walked to Arashiyama (it took about 45 minutes on foot). But I think you can rent some bicycles, so it would probably only take 25-30 minutes by bicycle. If you enjoy exercising, it might be a good opportunity for you to stay here.
