Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United KingdomNothing. Everything was lovely.
What a delight! Upon arrival I was offered a Yukata to wear while on the property. The gentleman, despite speaking no English, explained everything through the use of Google translator. I was offered a bike to explore the area, which I did before returning and taking a bath in their onsen before having a wonderful dinner in their dinning area. I slept extremely well on the futon mattress in the room. And rose to have a fabulous breakfast with 11 different items (yes, I counted them! :). After checking out, they kept my luggage while I explored the area a bit more. Visiting Ohara and Ryoso Chatani was a highlight of my trip to this region of the country! I highly recommend and would happily return the next time I’m visiting the area!

Such a cozy place! Only 5-minute walk to the Ohara bus station. Ladies can choose their colorful bathrobe, and gentlemen have theirs in the room. The meals are delicious and abundant. The lovely decorations, light music, and soft scent inside the house made us quite relaxed. Never to mention the hot onsen! They provide almost everything you need, including different kinds of skincare products. Definitely a wonderful place to enjoy yourself. The owner really should have attached more photos on the website. It's far better than I imagined!

The owners are super friendly and very service-minded. They went above and beyond to make sure that our stay was a comfortable and enjoyable one. A bike ride around town was pleasant one. The dinner and breakfast were well prepared and very delicious. While the onsen might be small, it was good and well equipped with all amenities needed.

SingaporeMen's shared toilet has only 2 cubicles and a urinal. Window kept closed and rely mainly on a ventilation fan which is not very effective to remove the stench.
Host friendly and helpful. Good service. Call room by room when the meal is ready. Nice and warm ambience. Common area clean and smell pleasant. Room spacious. Comfortable pillow and futon. Inhouse onsen well equipped and enjoyable especially for the ladies.

AustraliaThe fact there was no direction to get there on public transport. It was very difficult to sort out, so here’s the directions. From Kyoto Station take the Ohara bus to Ohara (red bus). As the bus station walk through and over the river. Once over turn left and your there.
The owner went out of his way to make sure our stay was great. The meals were excellent in lovely setting. We took a walk up the hill to the temples which were beautiful.

United KingdomThis is a wonderful place and anyone who is looking for an authentic ryokan experience should not be put off by the shared bathroom facilities - they are comfortable and spotlessly clean. The food is wonderful and the hosts are totally charming. The inn backs on to a river and the village and the countryside around is very attractive. It’s very easy to get to on public transport and a pleasant bus ride up the river valley from the metro station in Kyoto. Don’t hesitate to. Highly recommended.

We had a great stay at Ryoso Chatani. The beautiful village of Ohara is just an hour by bus from Kyoto. We were immediately warmly welcomed by the owners of the hotel. Everything was really great and very clean. The onsen was lovely too. A very relaxing stay. I would definitely recommend this stay during your trip to Japan. Many thanks to the owners who made us feel completely at home.

United StatesEverything was great!
The hosts were very warm and friendly! They informed us if the hot baths were extended so that we would be able to stay in it longer than the listed 4pm-10pm. Also, when we thought we lost our cellphone there after departing on the bus, after we contacted them, they immediately went to look for it. We borrowed the free bikes and rode around the town. They provided us a map so we could navigate our way around. The view from the bike trails to the view from our bedroom was beautiful. Just like out of a painting. The pictures do not do this place justice. It's best to take it in with your own eyes! This place is an hour bus ride from Kyoto. You'll see people growing their own food and the local food places source from them! The pizza we had at one of the local places over ran the view of the river and it was a fantastic pizza. The baths are communal and the hot bath was fantastic. The women's bathroom especially was filled with lots of towels, pretty decorations, and lots of lotions for use. I like the face cleanser provided so much, I went and bought the same one! There are also two massage chairs in the women's baths. The men's baths had a foot massager. The bathrooms are also shared. They were freshly cleaned every single day! Also, we got yukatas to wear while staying there. We only stayed two nights, but the hosts kindly offered to let us change it daily. After we checked out, we were given beautiful magnet gifts of Kyoto sights. We highly recommend if you visit to bright a small gift from your home country like a local snack or candy to exchange gifts. Staying here was like staying with our lovely grandparents in the countryside. We spent two nights here in between our Tokyo and Osaka trips. We definitely recommend staying here to relax and slow down after shopping and visiting the active cities.

United StatesThe beds were a little thin for our taste but that is how all the beds are in the other hotels we stayed at in Japan and seem to be more authentic.
We took the bus from Kyoto station and it took around an hour to get there. The host didn't speak a ton of English but was super friendly and spoke enough to explain how everything worked. The dinner was amazing, more food than we could eat and tons of different courses like a true Japanese meal. The onsen was great and the women's had a massage chair in the dressing area that the women in my family loved. We borrowed the free bikes they had and did a little ride around the local area which was extremely beautiful and green. It was nice to get out of the city and just relax.

PolandEverything was perfect about this place. It is roughly an hour by bus from Kyoto, but it is only a short walk away from the bus stop and the views and calmness of the surroundings are precious. The Ryokan itself is not too big and very cosy. The owners speak just enough English to explain all the rules in simple words. There are cups, green tea and a thermos in the room. You can get more hot water in the shared kitchen. There is also a microwave and a refrigerator. Shared toilets are very tidy. The shared baths were a highlight of our trip. They are separated by gender and rather small, but the hot bath is fantastic. Women's changing room has face cleansers, hair brushes, hair bands, dryers etc. Futons in the room were very comfortable. The owners call your room to come for breakfast in the morning. Everything was delicious and we were really full afterwards. On checkout the host offered to take a picture of us next to the Ryokan. I cannot recommend this place enough! The quality of our stay was insanely good compared to the price. Would visit again.
