Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

AustraliaThe stairs were a little daunting but that was all. Everything was emasculate and the staff were very accomodating to requests.
The property is very clean and reflects the traditions of Kyoto. The room was amazing with tatami flooring, futon beds and a genkan to give the unique experience to its customers. I absolutely loved it and its location as it was near the markets and the historical district.

United StatesYou had to book a specific time for breakfast -- seemed a little constraining. Beds were a little hard but most hotel beds in Japan are harder than the US average.
Lovely front desk service. We did not take advantage of the private onsen service but I wish we had. This is in a very cute neighborhood, lots of interesting things in walking distance. Overall a great place to stay and a nice value.

A wonderful Japanese ryokan-style hotel that is warm, comfortable, friendly & clean. The hotel facilities were great as it has its own private onsen, money changer machine, breakfast service & plenty of family activities to do such as: tea ceremony, kimono rental & origami folding. The breakfast was wonderful too with 5 different sets to choose from. We love the Japanese breakfast set the most & would highly recommend to try it at least once during your stay. The hotel is also quite close to train stations, less than 1km walk away. The hotel staffs were really friendly too & were helpful in answering our queries. Most of them can speak English and therefore, foreigner friendly.

United StatesAbsolutely lovely ryokan. Fantastic and helpful staff, great location, and has lots of authentic and updated vibes to it. The tatami mats were comfortable, rooms were small but fit our needs. Comfortable onsens, although they are definitely meant for single occupancy, not two - quite small! We really enjoyed this place and would definitely stay here again were we to return to Kyoto.

RomaniaAmazing experience - Ryokan stay. Proper futon plus tatami sleeping in a large room, especially large when you put aside the tatamis. Makes you wonder why on earth we need the huge useless beds that occupy 60% of a room and make it useless during the day. Super friendly and knowledgeable staff.

United StatesThe breakfast is a great deal ($8). The only downside was we (believe) we paid the night before each breakfast as that is required and for one of the breakfasts they recorded we didn’t pay. Insist on a receipt for your payment of breakfast (they provide a ticket but not a receipt) and there will be no issue. Try the traditional Japanese breakfast—$8–an amazing value.
Experience a traditional Japanese accommodation. Staff were very helpful. Location was great.

United KingdomNo complaints that I can think of!
It’s more like a hotel than a traditional ryokan but we liked it. Beds on the floor were surprisingly comfortable and we had a great nights sleep. Also one of the nicest western breakfasts we had in Japan - properly cooked scrambled egg! Staff were friendly and helpful.

SpainGreat cozy ryokan! Sadly, we only spent one night there, but it was fantastic. We booked a traditional room, and it was certainly a pleasant experience. Everything provided by the hotel made our short stay very comfortable. Futons were nice and soft, and we all slept without any disturbances. Definitely will come back to this ryokan during our next trip to Kyoto!

CanadaNot applicable. Our stay was perfect!
Kyomachiya Ryokan Sakura Urushitei exceeded our expectations. This was my family's first time visiting Japan, and it was a great way to introduce them to more traditional Japanese lodgings. We stayed in a tatami room and the futons were lovely and very comfortable. The room was very clean and had everything we needed. The staff at Sakura Urushitei were very kind and friendly. Check-in was very easy, breakfast was delicious (with Japanese and Western options), and the facilities were delightful. While there was no bath in the room we booked, there is a private bath you can book during your stay that is on site. The ryokan was also great about organizing and informing guests about kimono dressing experiences as well as tea ceremonies. Highly recommend!!

United StatesOur bathroom smelled a little funky, but everything else was great. I would stay here again. Our room was clean and comfy, and it worked for our family of 4. The staff was very helpful and kind. They brought us extra futons to make the Japanese beds more comfy. They had umbrellas for us to use when it rained.
The Japanese breakfast was yummy

United StatesThis is just based on my needs, but you only receive one physical key which can be cumbersome if you are traveling with friends and have different schedules.
Very spacious room with a lot of light and also great amenities available at the front desk to pick out as you need. They host a number of events and are extremely welcoming. Highly recommend staying here, especially for any first timers in Japan. About a 10 minute walk from the commonly used bus and train stations and a 25-30 minute walk or 5,000¥ taxi from the Shinkansen station.
