Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United StatesThe price was pretty steep for a shared bathroom and not a free breakfast.
The staff was wonderful, warm and generous. The breakfast was lovely and the accommodations were comfortable. We loved the rooftop for watching the sunset and seeing the view. Oh, also, the location is excellent! So convenient for seeing the old town of Kyoto.

United StatesThis traditional Inn is in an ideal location nestled against the mountains and right in the heart of the historic area of Kyoto, within an easy walk to several landmarks. The staff was above and beyond friendly and helpful and the breakfast was fresh, hardy and delicious. As an American and first time in Japan, I highly valued a more authentic traditional Japanese Inn experience.

MexicoBreakfast: we asked for a traditional japanese breakfast and it was scrumptious: miso soup, egg with veggies, salmon, rice, spinach and carrot salad; simply delicious. There was a small onsen which was just perfect to relax in. The room was spacious enough and very tidy. Our host, Shusui, was delightful, very friendly, very hospitable, he made the experience much more enjoyable.

United StatesThe only downside was that the futon was a little uncomfortable. It was thick and plush but still felt like I was sleeping on the floor. Bed are available for an extra fee! Next time, I will pay extra to rent a bed. :)
Cute, authentic ryokan in the heart of the Kiyomizu area off Ninenzaka street, just a short walk from the iconic temple. The accommodations were unique with lots of features like the private bath you can reserve for free, and a cozy rooftop with beautiful views of Kyoto. The hosts were so kind and welcoming and it felt like I was an honored guest at their home.

AustraliaAmazing place to stay in a great location. The staff were very welcoming carrying our bags up to our room and performing a tea ceremony for us when we arrived. The Japanese-style rooms are spacious and it is a very quiet part of the neighbourhood, perfect place to relax. For an additional fee you can request dinner (ask the staff ahead of time.) Though not cheap, we were prepared sukiyaki and waited on for the entire meal by an amazing cook and hosts which was more than worth it. I highly recommend asking about this for a very special meal with your loved one(s). The rooftop terrace is the perfect place to chill out (have a smoke if you partake) and take some amazing pictures of the neighbourhood and pagoda nearby.

Exceptional staff. We were received were nicely and it was like a dream coming true. The breakfast was tipically japanese and tasted very good. The rooms were exactly what we wanted. Tatami mats and sleeping on a futon is a must in a japan trip. And the traditional japanese bath is a perfect addition. Also the views from the terrace were very nice.

United KingdomI have a few criticisms that I think can be solved if the owner decides to. The toilet is shared, so it would have been nice if they had disinfectant spray to wipe the toilet seat with. I've seen this in a few japanese toilets, and in this case, it would be very helpful and prevent guests from having to put paper down on the toilet every time. They were very clean, but I would still not feel comfortable sitting on it after someone else did. Another thing was the location of the fridge. It was just on the countertop. It was super loud when it turned on so made for an uncomfortable sleep. Please consider putting it somewhere a bit more soundproof. Maybe inside a cupboard, with ventilation, of course. The location was great, but it made it hard to travel around Kyoto. The closest train station was about 20-25 min walk away. The closest bus was about 5-10 mins, but because the location was so popular, it was always full. Not to mention the traffic. If you plan on spending most of your time away from Gion, a location with better transport links might be a better option.
The staff was very accommodating and super friendly! The best staff we had the pleasure to meet during our time in Japan. The view from the terrace was beautiful and you could even ask to use the terrace bath tub. The breakfast was really good. We specially loved the tamagoyaki from Shūta-san. The room had a nice authentic feel, and the whole ryokan was very well decorated and presentable. The futon were also very comfortable. The tea cups and teapots were replaced daily. The location was very close to Kiyomizu Temple (5-10 minutes walking).
