Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

BelgiumIf you want quick access to the rest of Hakone is a bit of a bus ride but it’s part of what we loved about it because it made it more relaxing
A really relaxing stay. The hotel is very charming and feels like old Japan. The staff was lovely and the private onsen was perfect! The meals were delicious and very generous. We really loved relaxing here and would definitely come back!

SwedenNo real complaints. We had a fantastic time. Some might find the time restrictions a little constraining. Dinner is served at a certain time (you get a few options to choose from) and breakfast is also served at certain, where they will come 30 minutes before to clear away the futon beds. But for us it was a great experience. The Japanese breakfast was also a little difficult for us. A bit too much food so early, but still fun to try
We arrived by bus and the bus stop is just outside so very convenient. Although the bus from ... was really crowded. Get to the bus early to get a seat because it’s a 1-hour ride and our bus was crammed full of people. It goes every half hour so if the first is full get the next. The hotel has a beautiful Japanese garden out front. I mean so beautiful! With a carp pond and a small bamboo grove. The sakura was blooming and it was magical. The hotel main building was nice and felt calm and understatedly luxurious, if a little dated. The staff was very attentive when we arrived and helped us with everything. There is a pervasive smell of sulphur but that is to be expected for the area and can't really be helped. It didn't bother us. We stayed in a traditional room with a private open air onsen. The room was spacious and beautifully decorated. I think it was in the older part of the building, so the bathroom was a little dated but again, it was still lovely. And it provided all amenities we could need. I'd have loved to have seen the new buildings though and if I go again, I’d make sure to book one of them with private onsen. But for our part the room was lovely and large and the private onsen was amazing, looking over the little garden. We had our kaiseki dinner served in the room from a kind lady. Everything was delicious and beautifully presented. Couldn't have asked for more. Breakfast was also served in the room, and was again beautifully presented and a traditional Japanese breakfast. The open onsens (non private) we're nice, although you have to walk between the indoor and open air onsen. So, you have to leave the indoor one and walk further down the corridor to find the open-air ones. But the private onsen in the room was the star of the show for sure.

ChinaThe water temperature in the outdoor private onsen bath is too hot (perhaps there was a way to adjust the temperature, but it wasn’t clear)
The traditional Japanese breakfast and dinner were both exceptional. The staff were so warm and helpful! The rooms are so charming and it was fun to sleep on tatami mats.

United StatesBedding had a slight fish smell to it.
This was such a relaxing place to stay. Our room was beautiful with a great view of a small water fall. The staff were very welcoming and helpful. Our room did not come with dinner but there are a few restaurants within 5 minute walking distance that we enjoyed. You cannot see Mt. Fuji from here but with about 45 minutes of travel to Owakudani you will have great views!

AustraliaNo coffee! I know it’s traditional breakfast but I’ll be off to find one after leaving.
The indoor and outdoor hot springs were beautiful, the room was perfect with comfy futons, the views of the mountains stunning. Then there is the 10 course meal, sake and amazing breakfast. What an absolute treat. I wish I could stay longer.

United StatesSeems kind of random whether you get meals served to you in your room or you have to go to the dining hall. (You won't know until you check in.) And parts of the building seem very old and in need of maintenance (e.g., the hallways and elevators).
Very nice staff who spoke decent enough English. Excellent dinner/breakfast. Beautiful spa facilities and walking trails. And the room was very nice with good tea and a few snacks.

AustraliaFood, staff, facilities, locations are awesome. I believe the business has been operating here for long time. It is not the modern or new premises with tap key access etc... but that is what made it unique.

AustraliaJust because it was cold, it would have been good if the indoor and outdoor baths were connected.
The dinner and breakfast were excellent. Top quality food. The provided us with a private dining room along with a baby chair which made the whole experience that much better. The staff were all very friendly and loved making our baby smile every time he saw them.

United StatesThe hotel is extremely old - while this helps provide the traditional ambiance and the rooms have been renovated and updated, there are some signs of age. We noticed the bathrooms were a bit dark, and saw that some of the wallpaper in the restrooms was coming off (not surprising, given the high humidity and proximity to the hot springs).
We stayed in the Annex, in a traditional tatami room with a private in-room onsen. The property is peaceful and serene, and the staff are truly exceptional. Our room was spacious and comfortable, and the in-room onsen was an amazing amenity to have. We loved the breakfast and dinners - the hotel easily accommodated our dietary restrictions, and the meals were both aesthetically beautiful and absolutely delicious.

AustraliaDespite being just a bit out of the way, it was as advertised but exceeded my expectations. Staff were kind and it was easy to communicate. As befitting, the onsen and the kaiseki was spot on. A good stay and was very good value for money.

United StatesNothing to dislike!
Loved everything about this ryokan! Even my mother, who's in her early 60's loved it. Definitely the highlight of our Japan trip. The location of the ryokan is a bit further out from the busy touristy areas near Gora, but it was great because it was so peaceful and quiet. The garden was also very beautiful and quite big (took us about 45 min at a leisure stroll while taking many pictures). The private open air hot spring was great and very soothing. The food was excellent. The sashimi was very fresh and the roast beef melted in our mouths. The presentation of the food was so beautiful. This was our 4th day of our Japan trip and the meals we had here were the only ones my mother finished completely. We were stuffed after every meal, but finished everything since it was so good. As an Asian American who eats rice almost daily and is very particular about plain white rice, even the rice was so good. It was cooked perfectly. We stayed in the main building. The facilities are a bit dated, but we still thought it was clean. It has a traditional look and feel to it, which is what we wanted. Some reviews on this site mentioned a strong pickle smell, but we didn't smell it at all. They were burning some incense and maybe wood? that might've covered the smell, but we didn't mind it at all. It was quite nice actually. The staff was also excellent and every moment was memorable. Overall, this was an exceptional experience and would highly recommend it! My picky mother also gives it a two thumbs up 👍 👍

United StatesIt’s an old property that’s showing its age. It’s a bit rough if you look closely. On a very personal level, it was disappointing that properly-fitting yukatas are not available for larger people, but we sort of expected that. The general manager (or the person who seemed to be the general manager) isn’t the most personable of people. I found the fact that he communicated with guests through his employees, even though we were all in the lobby together, off-putting. We chucked it to being part of the experience of a traditional ryokan.
The location was great. The property had a great atmosphere and was very clean and relatively well maintained. The staff were attentive and very helpful.

PolandThis is a very nice place, the gardens are very nice and the view of the garden from the restaurant is amazing. The food is very well done japanese food and they serve you a lot. The onsen is also nice, but not tattoo firendly (I had to pay extra to go into the private onsens they provide). For me it was a very nice experience but felt a little comerzializated (sorry for the term). The place is too big, next time I stay at a ryokan Im looking into a more family owned less rooms kind of place.
