The rules are not very clear, and it is a little confusing to know what is located where as the staff did not explain us anything. The shower is also public, so be aware of that.

Great traditional style place with onsens where you can wear a swimsuit if you want to (only valid in the outside public mixed onsen). You can book a private onsen for free (there are two private onsens on site).

The location of this ryokan with its natural onsen (natural hot springs) by the river is just amazing! The private onsens that are across the hanging bridge are easy to book, wished we were allowed to stay longer when its not busy.

Overall we didn't feel very welcomed there. Things were not explained to us clearly, just brief video on reception. I had higher expectations from traditional Japanese ryokan.

Staff are a bit aloof and cold. Maybe they are a bit wary of having to speak English. Location is a bit out of the way, we had to take a 1.5h bus ride from Takayama.

Lovely outdoor private onsens. Kaiseki dinner and breakfast was an interesting and enjoyable experience. Rooms were comfy and clean.

We had asked if it would be ok to come a bit late to dinner when we originally booked our stay (the bus we were taking did not arrive until 6:25). We were told it would be ok, but when we arrived, we realized we made a mistake. We didn't realize everyone would be wearing yukatas to dinner, which made us feel a bit embarrassed since we were not wearing them (we were rushed to dinner by the staff when we arrived). The servers did not speak much English and did not explain the dishes to us very often, so we had to use some guesswork to know how to eat everything, which again was sometimes embarrassing for us. Now none of this is the hotel's fault. I just wish there was a bit more guidance at dinner for foreigners since we felt a bit out of place. The public bathroom that you have to use at the location is ok. When I was in there, there were a few bugs/spiders. I managed to bath myself and avoid them, but it wasn't the most pleasant experience. The staff did not speak much English - there is not anything wrong with that, but it might be good information for foreigners to know when booking. You just might have to use translation apps at times.

The private onsen was great. Good view of the river and the surrounding natural beauty.

Amazing location, surrounded by beautiful nature. Superb outdoor onsen as well as indoor bath. Delicious dinner and breakfast! Interior is a bit dated, but very clean and comfortable, thus only adding to the charm.

Full on breakfasts were a bit much for this western palate, though the chef is very good.

Amazing old mountain Ryokan near the Shinhotaja Ropeway. Delicious food, comfy futons. We had a big family room with great views. The onsen were the best, beautiful, right by the river. Many thanks for your warm welcome.

We had looked forward to the private onsen experience, yet inexplicable the private onsen were closed during our stay. They did not mention this to us beforehand when we enquired about it. Be advised that this hotel is in the middle of nowhere, there are no shops around and it is not in Kamikochi. To go to Kamikochi you would have to take two buses again (ca 45 minute trip)! It is however a 15 minute walk to the Ropeway where there is a little takeaway counter for food and you can do some hikes. The hotel does not offer lunch.

Beautiful property! It is located right next to the river which you hear all the time. The onsen are lovely (although the private onsen was closed). Swimsuits are OK, however men are allowed to bathe nude in the mixed onsen. Women are only allowed to bathe nude in the women-only onsen and have to wear a modesty wrap in the mixed bath which they give to you upon check-in. Tattoos are OK. The room was spacious and had a small separate area with a sink. Toilets are shared and there is a shared bathroom downstairs separate for male/female. Japanese style bathroom (no private showers). We loved the spectacular view from the onsen and our window. The breakfast and dinner was amazing, and plenty of food. No choices, you get a set menu. A lot of fish and vegetables, some hida beef, soups, noodles, rice and tea. We visited in November and it was not busy. We went on a hike from the Ropeway station and did not see any other hikers. Beware that this time of year there are bears around and precautions should be taken when walking in the forest.
