Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

If you are reading review, just book it now as you will not regret it! It is a family-run guest house which is kept very clean and tidy. All the staff are very friendly, warm and attempt to speak English to make us welcome. The ensuite room was spacious with a heater/aircon built in. In the check-in afternoon if you come before 3pm-ish, the grandfather of the house takes you on a quick tour of Shirakawago in his car and then drives you to the observation deck for that famous insta-pic, a walk tha is otherwise 20mins or wait for the shuttle. And no need for selfies as he offers to take pictures for you. The pride he and his family have for his village and to host us as guests is just so heart warming. There is a lovely onsen with a beautiful view of the river but still has privacy. The dinner is a thoughtful set menu of small traditional dishes which is made from local produce. However it may not be for the faint-tongued as some dishes were very traditional with first-time tries for us of peculiar things for western taste, I don't want to spoil the surprise so won't name them here. Note that day trips are done from the cities so bus loads of other tourists start from around 10am onwards, and this is when the little shops and finger foods also open along with the small museum-like houses. Obviously these bus loads start leaving late afternoon, so the village is very tranquil in the evening and first thing in the morning. Well worth staying at least a night and definitely with Shiroyamakan! We loved our stay and it will be a memorable experience for my husband and I!

AustraliaOne of our highlight of the trip around the region. We loved how fully equiped our rooms are, unlike other onsen hotels, our room has a separate toilet and wash basin which has been a bonus! We love how clean and tidy the property is maintained and we love the food and beverage offering at Shiroyamakan. Most importantly, the host presents the whole family working together and offering help and services to all guests, it has been a warm and high standard stay for us!

United StatesIt was perfect.
Wow, this was definitely our favorite stay in Japan. The room was gorgeous, the food was delicious, and the family was very kind. Our room had a modern zen vibe with absolutely stunning views. The bath was lovely, too. I like how you get to meet the different family members and they tell you who contributed what to dinner. They all have varying levels of English, but you could hardly tell since check-in and the meals were handled by family members with very good English. The father drove us up to the lookout and gave us a tour with google translate. He also was happily taking tons of great photos for the guests at the viewpoint. When we left, he and his wife walked us out to say goodbye. It's also conveniently very close to the bus stop. Thank you for a lovely stay!

United StatesThe bathroom for our room was a tad small - both my husband and I needed to sit sideways to fit our legs.
My husband and I came to Shiromayakan for our honeymoon, and I'm so glad we did. The service and amenities were exceptional. This is a family-run place and every staff member is incredibly gracious and went far out of their way to make our honeymoon special. Our room was large and traditionally styled with beautiful windows overlooking the river and heated floors (great for our winter trip!). The private onsen overlooking the river is absolutely gorgeous and very clean. Both breakfast and dinner are provided. They are multiple course meals targeted at adventurous eaters/foodies. If you are traveling with someone with conservative food tastes - make sure to tell the staff ahead of time and they will accommodate!

By far the best part of our two week Japan trip was our one night stay here. You only need a max of one night here. Most people make shirakawa a day trip but I’m so so glad we stayed one night. The location couldn’t be better. The staff (a wonderful family operated establishment) were unbelievably accommodating. We stayed in what felt like a truly magical Japanese experience. We were told the room was kept in tact for 130 years. The dinner felt like a Michelin starred experience, as did the breakfast. All the ingredients were intentionally sourced and part of the whole experience. During dinner, they offered an alcohol pairing along with various local alcoholic beverage options. The homemade Yuzu liquor on the rocks was my fave! There’s more! After check in, we were taken on a 45 min tour of Shirakawa. It felt like a VIP experience, being able to go in places the tourists weren’t allowed to drive to. The daughter explained to us the tour guide is her father, and he was so genuine and just an all around warm hearted human being. He made a snow heart for us to hold while he took pictures of us at the first view point. He taught us of the lands history and was very informative given many generations of his family had lived in Shirakawa. I can’t recommend this experience enough!
