Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United StatesThe town is rather small, eg limited dining options. Not hard to get to other towns via bus tho. The beds weren’t super comfy.
Beautiful guesthouse with fabulous onsen on site 😩 the amenities were fantastic, had everything you needed in the bathhouse and kitchen. The common area had a great, communal vibe for relaxing. The staff was friendly. Everything is clean and well maintained. Set the bar sooo high for a hostel.

SwitzerlandShowers are only located in the baths area, which is closed for some time during the day so plan your morning shower accordingly
The best guesthouse of my trip, baths are really good, capsule was the biggest I've had, lounge is really cozy, with many mangas in English to read, free tea, coffee etc. Staff is very welcoming and nice, all in all really great time

NetherlandsWe stayed in a private room on the ground floor, for 5 rooms there was just one women’s and one men’s toilet, and assume this also covers people in the reception area. Private rooms do have sinks in the room which is helpful.
Hotel has a very welcoming feeling but very relaxed. The onsen is perfect, the staff is friendly. Great option to combine the best of both worlds: social elements, amazing facilities with updated looks. Onsen has all amenities that are expected and lounge clothes are provided, and very clean. Lounge is well thought out, with cute nooks for working or reading, eating. Plenty of opportunities to meet people, or just to keep to yourself. Overall a good alternative to the slightly more “dated” larger hotels in the area.

Indonesiathere is no lift from the parking area to hotel lobby so you have to use steep stair to bring your luggage, consider only to bring minimum or light luggage, also when you have a lot of luggage do not use public transportation to this hotel

AustraliaNot a big deal breaker but there are no private showering facilities so you have to use the indoor onsen for showering which was absolutely fine but just good to know.
Incredible accommodation considering the price. Quiet and relaxing. Nice location easily accessible by bus (free bus if you have hakone free pass) and decently good access to owakudani both via the shore of lake ashi or coming back via the hakone cable car, hakone tozan train line then a short bus ride back to accommodation. Onsen is incredible particularly the outside one and the kitchen common area was a lot better than most.

IsraelIt’s high up the mountain and a very steep walk from the train station. I would recommend to take the bus wen you get there- there is a bus stop close by and it will save you from drugging your luggage down and up the mountain from the station like I did. Another thing is that property is below the road so there are a lot of stairs you have to take to get to reception. Once you’re in there is an elevator but it is still not really suited for people having hard time with stairs. The staff did carry my luggage up for me when I checked out.
Every single thing. Do yourself a favor and stay there. It was a the best relaxation experience on a budget I ever had. A very old and beautiful establishment, having both indoor and outdoor onsens. There is no food served but there is a real comfortable and well stocked kitchen. There are a lot of restaurants in a walking distance and a 7/11 just a few minutes away. The lounge is big in very inviting, stocked with books and games for groups and families. There is also a kotatsu to warm your feet. There are a lot of walking trails around and you can always take the train up the mountain for more attractions, I just wanted to stay in and relax.

SpainNo elevator to get down to the ryokan, although it's not that many steps. Also, there was no breakfast included, however it's not a big deal as there are many places nearby.
Very nice ryokan. It has some dorm rooms but you can also book a private room with ensuite bathroom and shower. There is an indoor and an outdoor bathouse which were both very nice. Most of the time we were able to have them to ourselves as there were not that many people using them. There is also a common area with kotatsu and also free coffee and tea. You also have a lot of manga you can borrow to read!

Very relaxing stay at Onsen Guest House Tsutaya. Lots of kitchenware provided and a pleasant communal area with traditional heated table. They had no problem with me leaving my luggage there before check-in and after check-out. Onsen facility is nice and has indoor and outdoor; you have to put your clothes back on when walking to the outdoor onsen.

United KingdomCheck out is 11am which seems a little early to me but that's the same in other places in Japan. Onsen is closed from 10am until the evening which seems a strange because surely most people want to use it in the day. Other than that everything was awesome.
I stayed in one of the private rooms. Firstly the setting is magical. The building is on the side of a deep valley and our room looked over the river and waterfalls (the view is even better from the communal lounge/kitchen). Staff are very friendly and helpful. The outside onsen is amazing and seemed to be generally quiet while I was there. My wife had the female one to herself for the whole time. Given there are some crazy expensive resorts in Hakone, this is a great value way to experience the area and onsen.
