Decor was a bit dated but the services more than made up for it.

Lovely place. A bit dated but the facilities were great and the staff were exceptional. So helpful and friendly. The hotel shuttle was very handy and the onsen was fabulous.

It is too expensive for what you get. The food is not very good (feels like mass production, so tempura was not even warm nor crispy any more). A bit old building and unfortunately no easy access to the river, so only a nice view from the onsen.

We knew ahead of time that rooms with private outdoor hot tubs were all smoking only. But we wanted the tub so were willing to stay in a smoking room for that reason. The room was quite smelly but also quite dated. Think: traditional Japanese. However because of this, it made the room rate quite affordable. Once the hotel goes through the renovation, not sure how much more expensive such a room would be.

The location is great. We wanted a private outdoor hot tub. When we arrived, the water was ready and we enjoyed a soak before a yummy dinner.

Gorgeous location. Room was nice and clean. Onsen was a delight, especially after a long bike ride. The food was absolutely fantastic, especially the kaiseki dinner. First time I ever had wild boar.

It is a bit out of the way if you don’t have your own transportation, but the shuttle to Oboke station, where you can get a bus into the Iya Valley, helps a lot.

Big traditional Japanese room at a low price. Three morning shuttles to the Oboke train station, and if you call from the station, they will come pick you up. Beautiful location, friendly staff, nice Onsen.

I can’t say enough wonderful things about Sunriver Oboke. The staff are incredibly nice, the location is stunning, the food is really enjoyable and reasonably priced, and the onsen has incredible views of the river and hillsides. We also forgot our coats in the room and the staff were kind enough to mail them urgently to our final hotel stay in Tokyo. It was overall an incredible experience. This inn was the highlight of my stay in Japan, I already want to return.

The place is practically aged. Some salvaged chairs, a makeshift setup for smoking The beds spring protrude, have to place a futon over but still pokes.. TV model from a bygone era The Bidet system was a similar model we saw in 2009 We would have stayed just outside the valley for 1/3 of the price if we had known.

No shower inside the room. Need to pay onsen tax even not using onsen. There are spider web on aircon and balcony. Pillow is too hard and not comfortable. I stayed for 4 nights, don’t have good sleep.

it is extremely difficult to communicate with the hotel in English. We had some mistakes on booking.com, we tried to just pay the discount that was a mistake. but the hotel couldn’t understand what we were saying and kept saying the same thing whatever we requested. so in the end we ended up paying a huge amount of the money to compensate, which could have been a bit less. This experience was very frustrating as the staff felt like they couldn’t understand us at all or ignoring what we were explaining.

The bath is really good. The staffs try to be friendly.
