Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

CanadaThere was nothing to really dislike.
The atmosphere, the proximity to the Kumano Kodo, the owner and staff, the onsen were great. The supper and breakfast were very good. They were kind enough to prepare a bento for my next leg of my journey.

CanadaWould have loved it if there was an earlier breakfast option but totally understand.
Fabulous dinner, I left before breakfast, but the lunch box they provided was excellent to fuel me as I walked the Kumano Kodo. Spectacular location and views. Can’t recommend it enough!!!

Germany"The Lodge on the Pilgrim's Way exceeded all expectations. The dinner was an unparalleled experience, a delightful fusion of original Spanish influences like tapas, all made with organic ingredients—truly the best I've had in Japan. The warmth and hospitality of the host family added immensely to my overall comfort. The onsen was a serene oasis with breathtaking mountain views. Breakfast was equally delightful. A perfect 10 out of 10!"

United Statesn/a - Sad I didn't get to enjoy breakfast with everyone but that was my own fault as I needed to hit the trail at sunrise.
Such a wonderful and memorable experience! The owner puts so much thought and care into providing everyone with a great evening. Dinner was social (I was traveling alone and was introduced to other guests doing the same so that we had the option to eat together, which we did!) and the food was exceptional and fresh! The views at this hotel are some of the best I've ever seen. I'm not a morning person but the sunrise here is unmatched, the fog creeping out of the valley below is truly stunning.

United StatesI regret even saying it, because we loved the place so much, but the western style bed was just ok in terms of comfort.
It’s a beautiful and cozy place, up in the Takahara hills. The views were great and the food exceptional, but both were topped by the hospitality which was outstanding. The owners helped steer us in the right directions for hiking and even picked us up from the bus station down the hill after a long day’s hike. We had to leave very early our last day, and they arranged to make us coffee and a go-to sandwich. It’s a magical place, especially if you’re in a Kumano Kodo frame of mind. This is not a western style hotel, it’s cozy and charming and rugged. We loved it, and only regretted that the rest of our family could not be there to enjoy it with us.

Hong KongIt was first time we came here and didn't realize that it takes 1.5 hours hiking to reach the accommodation. Thankfully Shin-nobi san drove to pick us up. It would be great to provide more instruction about how to get to Kirinosato Takahara.
The host and his staff are friendly and helpful. The wooden architecture and its design is beautiful. The restaurant and the food are special and with taste. The rooftop balcony is relaxing at night. We love it very much.

United StatesNothing. It was wonderful. Jian left us with some homemade mochi / red bean buns, which we enjoyed on our hike the next day.
It was the perfect place to stay for our first night on the Kumano Kodo. After a steep, but enjoyable 2 hour hike, we were greeted with a smile from Jian, the owner, who showed us around and welcomed us with beers in the dining area with a spectacular view. Later that evening, Jian and a couple of classical guest guitarists, played 2 short sessions after the awesome dinner. We wished they had played more. It was a magical evening across the board. This place was so much more enjoyable than the classic Ryokan when travelling with friends. It was more engaging and enjoyable to socialize with our friends and other hikers. If you are looking for the classic Ryokan experience, this is not that. Personally we enjoyed this hybrid Ryokan with a lively common area and a bar so much more. And the good was excellent! We all highly recommend it. I wish we had found more places like this.
