Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United KingdomThis is the perfect place to stay if you want to experience traditional Japan. Great location with a beautiful temple just around the corner. The tatami mats were super comfortable too. Don't be afraid of them! The host was lovely and even brought us a welcome cup of tea. Much needed after a long days travel. I would highly recommend!

United StatesWe didn't have any negatives about our experience.
The room was large and comfortable. The air conditioner worked and cooled quickly when you returned to the room. The area was gorgeous and I wish we would have had more time there.

NorwaySound traveled easily in the house, but this is to expect with this type of home. We experienced that the other guests were aware of this and tried to stay quiet when walking around early or late.
We felt very much at home. We were greeted by Tammy who showed us to our room and welcomed us with a cup of tea. It was so much fun to stay in our first japanese style home during our trip in japan. There is a shared toilet and shower (separate rooms) with the other guests, but this was never any issue. There is also a small fridge, microwave, coffee and tea available to use. It is located very central within walking distance to many of the main attractions in Kyoto. We especially enjoyed walking along the riverbank with the sakura blossoms in full bloom. Highly recommend to stay here.

AustraliaTanaka-ya was excellent. Well situated, clean and comfortable, with a very friendly and helpful owner. It was certainly the perfect home base for us to explore Gion and Kyoto from. Rooms are spacious and comfortable while still providing the traditional japanese ryokan experience. Facilities were also clean and well kept. If I find myself in Kyoto again I will certainly be looking to stay at Tanaka-ya.

New ZealandMy friend didn't sleep well on the floor, but then I enjoyed sleeping on the tatami matts, so I guess it's a personal preference. The house is old, so the floorboards creak, and the walls are thin, so be prepared to hear other guests, but it's all part of the charm.
The owner was very lovely. Thank you for gifting me a bowl of fruit. They were delicious and came at the most perfect time. Very thoughtful. The location was wonderful. I really enjoyed being in a traditional house and being immersed in the culture.

AustraliaLow door frames, thin mattress, sharing bathrooms. This was more us being tall, old and stiff, finding it hard to get up off the floor in the mornings and thinking we could cope with sharing bathroom. No reflection on the wonderful host or the lovely old property.
Location is excellent central to everything, host Tamie san is sweet and helpful, authentic ryokan in historic Kyoto.

FranceNothing to 'not like' - I would like to put a mark 11 for Tanaka-Ya !
Friendly and warm welcome upon arrival. We were 'upgraded' to a 9 tatami room for the price of a 6 tatami room which was great, as we could then move comfortably in the room and spread our clothes etc around without thinking much. Two toilets and washing basin for 4 rooms was more than enough, and one shower room was also never a problem to access (we never waited). Tanaka-Ya is located in a small narrow street, pedestrian, very close to Gion and Pontocho. In the morning and evening we enjoyed very much walking in the area or along the Kamo-Gawa river, which is 100 meters away from the Ryokan. Tami-san, our host, took great care of us and we enjoyed very much some croisssants provided as a 'treat'. Free coffee and tea, a small oven, a fridge... everything was available to have a quick snack or drink if needed. The ratio price / quality of accomodation is fantastic, we will certainly come again !
