We only stayed 2 nights in Kyoto, but were very pleased with The General Kyoto for location, cleanliness and comfort. Very nice shower (no tub), lounge, and breakfast. Staff were all very friendly. This is a small hotel and we only encountered a few other guests during our stay.

Would be lovely if staff can provide restaurant recommendation and even reservation service.

Overall it is a great experience. The location is good and close to subway. Room is clean and the bed is very comfortable. The room comes with great facilities and amenities. Staffs are very polite. Overall, Japanese hospitality is flawless. Highly recommended.

Nothing major. Two very minor things: the bathroom fan was always on and a bit noisy, and there’s no window to let in some fresh air.

The hotel is in a very strategic position, near the business part of the city but in a side Street, which is crucial to avoid noise and traffic. Room has everything and there is also a complementary bar service for guests. Breakfast is ok and staff super available and careful of our needs.

100% recommended. Staff were the nicest and the location is 10/10. It’s walking distance to the train station and to lots of amazing restaurants. We still talk about this hotel and think it was the nicest place we stayed at while in Japan.

It’s such a small thing, but I wish the window in the room could see outside so that we knew what the weather was doing before going downstairs. But this would never detract me from staying at this hotel. The only other drawback is now we’re staying in a different hotel in Osaka and it feels like a major downgrade compared to The General 😂

We loved everything about this hotel! The location was great, the rooms were sooo quiet and clean, the breakfast was amazing, and the lounge was such a nice value add!! The bathroom is AMAZING and all of the touches in the room are so thoughtful. The staff were very friendly, the food was delicious. I would 100% stay at another The General hotel in a heartbeat.

Marina and Nami at the front desk were both very friendly and helpful. The room was nice and clean. The lounge having drinks and a bit of food was a welcome touch. We would recommend this hotel to our family and friends.

There was quite limited space in the room for luggage but this is perhaps standard for hotels in Japan, yet the bathroom was a lot more spacious than we were expecting. We were confused about where we could put recyclables as there was just a normal wastepaper bin in the room. We put recyclables in a pile but the cleaners didn't help to take it away. We didn't see any recycling bin anywhere so it was unclear how we could recycle--but then again, it's on us that we didn't ask.

Location was a few mins walk from Shijo subway station as well as the Karasuma Hankyu station. While the hotel was not near most tourist attractions, proximity to the subway meant that it was easy to get around. Nishiki Market was also a walkable distance away! Additionally, the Karasuma Hankyu station is actually connected to the Osaka metro; on weekends you can take the Hankyu express train straight down to Osaka (it turns into the Sakaisuji metro line). On weekdays you can also do this, you just have to hop off briefly at Awaji and board the next train towards Tengachaya) This was amazing for us travelling from Kyoto to Osaka as our next stop (it happened that we had booked accommodations in Osaka on the Sakaisuji line), as we didn't have to navigate the busy Kyoto nor Umeda JR stations with our luggage. The lounge with light bites (small portioned cups of udon and hot broth, hot oden on a heated plate, dango, swiss rolls, nuts) and open cocktail bar with beer/soft drinks in the evening (5-10pm) were also amazing! The lounge is also open in the afternoon but not many snacks are provided then. Staff were amazing and friendly. We also appreciated the reception being able to keep our luggage when we arrived early/left a bit later than the check-out time.

We loved our stay at this hotel. Rooms were clean and spacious and staff were super friendly and helpful. Breakfasts were delicious and there is a lovely guest lounge with complimentary drinks and snacks. The hotel is in a great location, within easy walking distance to public transport and shops.
