Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

SingaporeWhile the location of the hotel may prove to be slightly inconvenient for some travellers, the ferry service between the Hotel and Kyoto station (which leaves every hour) helps greatly. Drinks at the hotel bar are relative expensive, but could be circumvented by having drinks at a bar near the hotel.
This was my second time staying at this hotel, and it did not disappoint. The service staff were extremely polite and helpful, while the hotel room was clean and huge. There's also a ferry service between Kyoto station and the Hotel.

United StatesOne small thing to note was that the washer and dryer is a single unit, and loads should be kept small in order to properly wash and dry, though that is not noted nor a given. Additionally, there is a free shuttle to and from Kyoto Station, which I had believed was discontinued a few years ago before coming, leading to me taking the local trains with my luggage and adding a few flights of stairs to my trip here. The availability of the shuttle should be more pronounced in the features, it was easy and simple taking it to the station when I left.
This hotel has an awesome aesthetic and the room was a decent size given what is typical in Kyoto. The staff was all polite and friendly, greeting me every time I came and went. It's very quite which was a nice change of pace from Tokyo, and it is still within walking distance of some great restaurants and the nearest train station. The free washer and dryer was a nice bonus, and all staff I interacted with spoke great English.

NorwaySpa/bath was complementary and not included, which it should have been at the price of the rooms. Apart from that not much to dislike :)
Great location in Kyoto, close to temples and the forest. Located in a quite area and the hotel itself was quiet and subdued. Very elegant hotel and very nice rooms.

ItalyThe washing machine service is not ok, there are 2 public washing machines to use but once you load your laundry anyone can remove it every time to put his own even after 20 min . So i had my clothing totally wet in one bag randomly and i had to argue twice to get the job done .
Rooms are beautiful, hotel structure too, position is quiet and relaxing, breakfast is one of the best i ever saw

United Arab EmiratesStaff requires to learn more english because we tried to book a spa and the staff was challenged to the point that they dropped the topic.
The hotel rooms and amenities are very beautiful and serene. I would totally recommend it. Even though the room is at Japanese standards spacious, be mindful of your luggage as there are no wardrobes, just hangers for the coats. Breakfast was also nice and the staff were very polite and welcoming.

GreeceIt was the best hotel we stayed in during our trip in Japan. Its aesthetic was amazing, combining traditional and modern interior design. The room was super clean and comfortable. The stuff was polite and helpful. The location was very convenient for sightseeing at Gion and Northern Higashiyama. Even if it’s not central, it offers a free shuttle bus hourly to Kyoto station that we used everyday. We’d definitely choose this hotel again in the future.

United StatesNot a negative point but just a random relevant point is if you are 5’9 (175 cm) or taller and have long hair that you straighten or curl you will be underneath the fire alarm when doing so and it might set of an internal alarm to the front desk. My wife ended up having to curl her hair by the window to avoid this but it wasn’t the end of the world. Just a fair warning to anyone.
The Hotel Higashiyama was all around phenomenal. The shuttle from Kyoto station to the hotel made the trip start and end of the trip beyond easy. The hotel itself is in a perfect location for easy transportation to multiple areas for shrines and temples. Most importantly is the location to Gion district for some of the best food around. Inside the hotel was perfect, the rooms were spacious, the beds comfortable, and the whole venue was peaceful. You pay for what you get here, and it’s worth every penny! Would highly recommend and will stay here again when we return to Kyoto on our next trip.

AustraliaBreakfast was expensive and quite a low standard for western breakfast. Not a problem as we are in Japan :)
Amazing hotel, very modern and large room compared to other hotels in Japan. Staff were extremely friendly and the free shuttle bus into the city centre was very helpful. Additional services such as the laundry room, gym and for an extra price the spa rooms were exactly what we needed. Price was very affordable also.

AustraliaSlightly out of the way location from the centre of Kyoto, but close by enough to a station to walk to and get transport around.
The hotel was so luxurious, the staff were friendly and attentive, the facilities were top notch. We enjoyed our stay so much. We had a spa and massage booked in after a long day of travel and it was absolutely so relaxing and the staff were very attentive. The neighborhood was also quiet and safe with a convenience store across the road for necessities. The laundry machines were free to use if you are staying and it was very helpful to us as we were traveling for a month.
