Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). As with most Japan accommodations, room was a bit small but still comfortable for our family of 5. Hotel staff are extremely friendly and helpful as well. I really like the hotel, it’s really cozy and gives such a laid-back vibe. Would definitely come back to stay here.

AustraliaAfter a huge day with the kids at Universal Studios Osaka and the subsequent trip from Osaka to Kyoto, I was feeling pretty tired when arriving at the hotel, as was the rest of the family. But from the moment we stepped inside, I felt looked after beyond belief from host Yoo ki ko. From the beautiful linen, towels, the amazing cleanliness and all the little extras like bath salts for a soak in the bath, it went well beyond my expectations. No other way to make a mum happier than the ability to have a soak in a proper Japanese style bath with beautiful salts after a big day. The hosts were amazing, went above and beyond to help in any way possible. and even helped us in the planning of our day trips. We had an early flight home and not only did they help book our taxi but made sure we were up early to not miss it and waved us goodbye at the front door. I have travelled the world and stayed in many hotels. This one was by far one of the most memorable. Would highly recommend.

Beautiful room and much larger than expected. We enjoyed our room and even spent our mornings drinking the available coffee provided. It’s in a quiet area which we preferred, the hotel staff were very kind and helpful. They provided all the information on amenities, maps of Kyoto, recommendations around the area, and helpful with any questions we have. It was a wonderful stay.

Little touches that made it special. Unexpectedly came with a kitchen that was useful. Very comfortable and nice area. Would definitely come back here.

GermanyWe stayed at Tanakaya Kyoto Karasuma for several nights and used it as a base to visit Osaka and Nara as well. It’s location is great for exploring Kyoto and its surroundings. The four-person superior tatami room is beautifully decorated, very clean, and comfortable. We also enjoyed taking a bath in the tub in the evening. All in all we had a very relaxing stay and everyone at the hotel was exceptionally kind and helpful! Thank you!

SingaporeSomething to note and not a complaint. Laundry is a distance away because our room wasn't equipped washer or dryer. Traditional blinds do not block out sunlight well so an eye mask would be good for those who like to sleep in.
Friendly hosts, nice common dining area, spacious yet compact, very new, nice eateries on the main street, lovely tub to soak in with bath salts provided.

Kyoto is packed with tourists and this location was PERFECT. Out of the way of the busiest streets and on such a cute little area of downtown. Yokiko was so kind and helpful and the service was truly unmatched. She called places to make reservations for us, and when one place didn’t answer she walked down the street to the restaurant to make the reservation. The room was half ryokan and half western and was such a delight to experience. 10/10

The staff is amazing and tried the very best to make us feeling home. The room was nice and clean, and it comes with a lot of little perks like tea, futon, tatami area, super good bathroom products. We also experienced the breakfast and the dinner in the room and has been a beautiful experience. And the day of the check out, they also gave us advice about the next city in our itinerary. So, love the idea of coming back the next time we will be in Kyoto!

This is a beautiful small hotel, it was absolutely perfect for our 4 night stay in Kyoto. The hotel decor is elegant and stylish, and the staff provide exceptional service. Our room was beautiful, spacious, clean, and comfortable. It was a pleasure to return at the end of a busy day to rest in the calm surroundings. The location is also excellent. It's an easy walk to the subway, Kyoto Station and into the city centre. Lots of places to eat nearby. Highly recommended.
