Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.

By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

SingaporeThe only irritating thing was weak wi-fi connection. It was a challenge to do video calls with the family.
I booked a room with the access to the inner courtyard. It was beautiful, with Japanese stone lanterns, with a pine tree, a red maple tree and bright green moss. Everything was authentic and it felt like I was a hundred years back. However, all the facilities were modern and in an excellent condition. The owner was a lovely woman, warmly welcoming her guests. She served a traditional Japanese breakfast in the morning. The location is near a few bus stops so it was very easy to go around the city. It took about half an hour by bus to come to the hotel from Kyoto station. The Imperial palace is about 20 min walk away, the same for the subway. It was exactly what I was looking for - to spend a few days in a quiet and secluded place in the middle of the peak tourist season in Kyoto.

United StatesPillows could have been more comfortable- pretty small & dense material. Would be great to have more than one pillow per bed as many people have back problems and need to sleep with a pillow between/under the knees. Also a sheet would be great too as the comforter- while it was wonderful, was a bit too hot without a sheet or thin blanket under it. I travel with a sarong, so it was fine- just a suggestion.
Beautiful traditional Ryokan- exactly what we wanted. Lovely and serene garden. Owner was super helpful in recommending nearby restaurants and calling taxis.

CanadaWe had difficulties figuring out how to lower the AC, so we were a bit cold. But nothing that a hot shower and a warm bed can't solve.
The room was great, the beds were comfortable, the garden was beautiful. The host was so nice, she even took picture of us when we left. We had breakfast once, it was traditional and really tasty. The neighboorhood was calm and there is a supermarket really close. I'll go back again if i come back to Japan.

Very charming old ryokan, so sweet hostess. The hostess even made a little tee ceremony for us.

MexicoThe only thing we would’ve liked is that there were no stairs to our room, but this speaks to the traditional space it is, as ryokans usually have this type of layout. Also, shower inside the room without having to go down and up a flight of stairs would’ve been nice.
The ryokan was simply stunning. Facilities were really well kept, traditional Japanese house. The lady in charge of the ryokan was an absolute delight, super kind, attentive and helpful. She helped us receive our luggage through Yamato while we were out enjoying the city, she helped us forward our luggage through Yamato as well and she was an AMAZING host. Also the traditional breakfast offered was delicious!

AustraliaThere are three rooms at the Ryokan but we were the only guests there. It was very quiet and situated in a residential area. The bus was easy to catch however.
The room was large with a beautiful view of a Japanese garden. We were not to go into the garden but could open the door for fresh air. The beds were super comfortable and the bath was deep. We ordered the traditional Japanese rice breakfast (an extra Y1800 each), whilst the coffee was excellent it wasn't worth the additional Y790. An accomodation fee was charged Y1200. The host was lovely and happy to help.

AustraliaThe location is out of the way of lots of attractions in Kyoto, and you have to walk about 10-15 minutes to get to streets with restaurants. On the flip side, it means it's very quiet and peaceful during your stay and is a welcome change of pace from the hustle and bustle of the busier areas in town.
The host was super friendly and passionate and cooked a delicious breakfast. Very relaxed atmosphere, in a quiet street. Simple bedroom, but very spacious and comfortable. Had a nice balcony overlooking the neighbouring street.

SingaporeThe location is a little out of the way, we had to take two buses from Nijo station. However, there could have been more efficient routes, that we are unaware of. It was also interesting to see a ryokan in the middle of a residential area, which felt like a fusion of modern and traditional life. The garden was closed due to the cultivation of moss, so we were only able to look through the glass doors. Not sure, if the doors will be unlocked when the moss growing period is over, but it will be enjoyable to be able to step into the garden. There was an accommodation tax upon arrival of around 1000 yen, if i did not recall wrongly. This was in the fine print of Booking.com, which I missed out and was totally my fault. Writing down here just for awareness. Overall, the above points are more for awareness and did not take much away from the experience.
There is a lot of character in the design of the place and the garden view gave a very Zen feel. The host is fluent in English, made us feel welcome and is attentive to our needs. We asked to store our luggage and arrived at the ryokan at 2pm. While the check in time was 4pm, as the room was ready, the host allowed us to check in early. We paid for the breakfast at the ryokan and the breakfast was a traditional japanese breakfast, which made us feel like we were having a home cooked meal. The host also initiated to take our photo and have it sent to us via email. While the stay was more expensive than a lot of hotels in Kyoto, the experience to live in a ryokan and to be hosted by a lovely person made the stay memorable.

United StatesWe were on the second floor and the floors were creaky, which made us nervous to make too much sound. The sound carries and we worried about disturbing other guests. The shower was also on the first floor, which isn't convenient for people that don't like stairs.
The owner Hisayo was so nice and kind to us! The place was amazing and well taken care of. We did not opt for bfast but did get coffee every morning, which was excellent! Truly amazing to be able to stay at a 100yr old ryokan. Location is also great within walking distance of some of the major attractions!

AustraliaI didn't realise just how far away from things this stay is. If you don't mind walking to places or paying for a taxi, then it's fine! We found the busses to be too crowded so we would walk to JR Nijo station and take the local trains around the city or to Kyoto station for other train lines. You are also asked to pay an 'accomodation tax' upon arrival which was a surprise - they also asked it to be in cash, so it was lucky I had some on me. Our room was up a very steep set of stairs and the bathroom was down stairs (very private) but just in case you have a disability or can't do stairs - I would let the owner know first.
The place was really lovely to stay in - it felt like a very traditional Japanese home. The room was spacious and had a toilet, sink and mirror attached, the main bathroom was separate but had a full shower room with great shampoo, conditioner and body wash. The place was cleaned daily with new towels each day and your bed made. The owner was lovely and greeted you each time you came back from being out. It rained when we visited and she kindly let us borrow umbrellas. It was a quiet area and the bed was super comfortable.

United StatesWe found the location just a little too remote for our purpose. We were visiting Kyoto for the first time, so we were touring daily from one historical site to another, then walking around at night. It would be a beautiful place to slow down and rejuvenate, however, we were geared up for a different type of Kyoto visit.
Beautiful 100-year-old home, filled with beautiful antiquities. So beautiful, it felt like an Asian museum.

FranceActually, very little. Access to the Kyoto buses (generally very useful) is not instant (5-10' walk needed). Immediate neighborhood is residential (so not a party place, not masses of ) but the entertainment areas of Kyoto accessible by taxi at reasonable rates.
Very restful decoration that alluded to the history of the neighborhood and yet was fully functional. Lovely Japanese breakfast, tasty and filling. Fantastic tea available in the morning if you remember to ask. We had the ground floor room with two single beds and a nice view into the pocket Japanese garden plus comfortable chairs to rest and relax in the view. Bathroom facilities as one would expect in Japan, high quality. Super quiet at night.

United StatesThe location is tucked away in a neighborhood, so not very close to the tourist attractions but we did not mind this since Kyoto is so large, there is likely no perfect location. We really enjoyed staying in a non-touristy neighborhood and we had the chance to try authentic restaurants in the area because of this -which we absolutely loved (some of the best places we went in all of Japan).
The hotel room was exceptionally clean and had an amazing view of a small, private Japanese garden. The room was very very clean, and was tidied up daily - with all the amenities and water bottles replaced too. We appreciated the daily water so much after long days of walking! The best part was the shower.... it was to die for!

Hong KongSince there is a garden, expect to get an insect or two come inside if you open the door, e.g. mosquito, beetle etc, especially at night time. Although we had not much issues with it personally but it is just something to be expected with a garden.
I loved the traditional Japanese home with tatami mats and futon beds. Waking up to a beautiful Japanese garden was very refreshing too. The host was very welcoming. My husband and I also enjoyed the breakfast she cooked for us everyday and she agreed to do our laundry for us too only the next day we arrived which was very nice of her. The A/C worked perfectly and was great for hot summer days. We are truly impressed with Japanese hospitality and we would love to stay there again in our next visit to Kyoto.
