Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United StatesLoved it all!
The owners renovated a 110 + year old machiya (traditional Japanese House) and it is amazing. The attention to detail and the decor were carefully curated and beautiful. The bed was on the tatami mats and was extremely comfortable. The host was so helpful with recommendations and how to get around. I cannot say enough good about this place and the host.

United KingdomGuests should be aware that the bathrooms are shared and separate to the bedrooms, so if you would have trouble going up/down stairs at night then this might be an issue for you.
Chiyo-san was a wonderful host, who explained everything we needed to know very clearly (especially the instructions for leaving or coming back to the guesthouse late at night/early in the morning). She has designed such a beautiful place and her husband has created a peaceful garden to look out on while planning your day ahead. We loved the vintage furnishings and the chance to spend the night on futon in a traditional tatami room.

PortugalIt’s authentic house that was renovated recently. I liked cozy atmosphere here and want to stay a little more. Owners is so nice and can talk to other you in English and recommend you places for visit in Kanazawa. Location is in ten minutes from the culture center, so it’s quite there and peaceful. Room is huge by Japan standards and even had an improvised balcony, from which you can look at the garden. If you’re traveling around Japan like me, I recommend this place for at least two day, especially if you come from Tokyo.

United KingdomThere wasn't anything I would change about the guest house experience. It was a bit further from the main attractions of Kanazawa but still only a 10min walk from the guardens and 15 from Nagamachi.
Our host was fantastic. One of the most helpful and kind people I've met, she helped us significantly with planning our travel and coordinated taxis for us. Really above and beyond. The restored interior of the guest house was beautifully finished and provided a tasteful comfort that we both appreciated. All in, this was a fantastic accommodation.

GermanyVery lovely guest house with a great host. Pleasant change to the usual choice of more or less soulless hotels if you want something more unique. I visited for a couple of days to see Kanazawa. Would definitely choose this accommodation again. Medium-duration walk to the city centre.

AustraliaThe loop bus is handy to get from the train station and to access sightseeing (200 metres) Choiya was a marvellous host and booked two wonderful little local restaurants, a seafood restaurant being the best experience of our trip. She also organised luggage transfer for us.

ChileIt was my first experience in a traditional japanese accomodation and I was not dissapointed. Its traditional, but at the same time modern. Stylish. Incredibly clean. They have a cozy room to drink tea and watch the amazing garden. Very quiet. It was like a holiday inside my holiday. Staff was very gentle.

United StatesThe shared bathroom setup worked well, but did require going down the stairs. The place isn't super soundproof.
The location was great and the staff was really friendly. Check-in was smooth (despite being late at night) and they were able to store our bags on our last day. The place itself was really pretty, with a small garden that was beautiful in the snow.

NetherlandsWe had just checked in when the big earthquake happened. The caring of the owners was excellent. We felt safe, taken care of and supported through our stay. Despite how impactful this situation was, this journey, and this accommodation, were the most touching and special during our 3-week stay in Japan. The ryokan is a traditional accommodation, with a beautiful attention for detail. We stayed in the bedroom upstairs, with a space to seat, a space to sleep, and a cute balcony. Everything was just so beautiful, so taken care of, and it was incredible. We have not enough words of praise and gratitude towards our hosts. This was one of those experiences that touch our heart and leave a mark for eternity.

United StatesAs mentioned, the ryokan/hotel is located in the modern area of town. You would need to take a 20-30 min or so bus ride to get into the old district. This can be both good and bad, since it is far from the old district (which are often swamped by tourists), you feel more like a local. However the historical sites are not readability accessible compared to other places. However I don't mind walking/taking public transport, but your mileage may vary.
It is a nice and comfy ryokan that is good value for money. The staff is wonderful and the amenities , although shared, are up to date and modern. The ryokan is situated in the modern area of town (near the modern art museum) and the shopping districts. There are a lot of quaint cafes and eateries that locals visit that are not bogged down with tourists. If you want a local hotel/ryokan that is good value for money, this is the place.

As authentic as it gets. Lovingly restored Japanese machiya with wonderful details. A real gem. Great host. Relatively close to Kenrokuen, but everything else also reachable by bus or on you own feet.
