Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United StatesThe owners/staff were really nice, they gave us a spray for my friend’s bug bites and recommended us places in Kyoto to visit based on what we were interested in! The tea ceremony was amazing to see, and she explained a bit of the history of tea ceremonies as well. Everything was very clean and the beds were so comfortable that my friend asked what brand of futon they were so that she could buy her own! Overall it was a really nice stay and I’d come again if I visit Kyoto in the future!

United StatesThe owner was very friendly and helpful! The tea ceremony was a memorable experience - every ceremony was special and we don't think having experienced Japanese-style tea ceremony elsewhere is a reason to pass on the ceremony at the ryokan, as it was especially prepared by the owner to welcome guests. The bathroom was spacious and there is a private toilet and vanity for each room so you don't have to share it with other guests.

AustraliaThere's nothing I didn't like.
Staff was extremely friendly and you could tell she was passionate about working there. We had a (free) tea ceremony which was great (almost as good as one we paid actual money for!). The ryokan is very well maintained and in a great location. The breakfast was delicious and traditional.

FinlandThe only thing that we could think of is that it's right next to a rather busy road. The road is not heavily trafficked during the night so it did not disturb our sleep, but they do provide earplugs in the room, just in case.
The staff was incredibly nice and accomodating, and made us feel super welcome. We got served Japanese tea and a snack in our room at check-in, and got to attend an amazing private tea-ceremony in the evening. They arranged a private bath for us in their gorgeous bath, which we got to enjoy without a time limit because we bathed soon after checking in. The staff fixed our futons in the meantime. The amenities (yukata/shaver/brush/earplugs/tea/etc etc) were great and the room had everything we needed (aircon/kettle/fridge/hairdyer/towels/yukata). We booked the traditional room with shared bathroom, but still had a designated toilet which was great. The spacious room was really nice with a comfy futon + beautiful, traditional Japanese decor and sliding doors, and a view over the small zen garden. Note that sound-proofing is non-existent. Staying here made us feel like we had gone back in time, it was lovely..and so peaceful. The breakfast was beautiful and delicious, and they were kind enough to accomodate to my vegetarian diet. They provide luggage forwarding service, which we did not utilize but it was nice to know that it would have been possible. They allowed us to rent the bikes even after checkout (¥1000/person). The ryokan is located around 15-20 minutes by foot from Kinkakuji, around 10 minutes from the beautifil Tenmangu shrine, the oldest geisha street in Kyoto, the National Gardens and Nijō castle.

New ZealandThe location is slightly hard to get to, you definitely need to take a 25-30 minute bus from JR Kyoto station but that's just something to be aware of and not really something I disliked about the property itself.
This was a fantastic stay with a very kind and understanding host. The hosts both spoke Chinese fluently which was a big plus for my parents and it was a very peaceful/tranquil stay all in all. The tea ceremony was a fascinating experience and I appreciate that the hosts were kind enough to accomodate the fact that we were delayed for our original check-in as well as for the ceremony schedule. The rooms were excellent and it overlooked a very quaint little garden as well. Breakfast the next morning was also very satisfying.

Our stay here was amazing. The hosts are so accommodating, and our tea ceremony was so special, something we will remember forever! The beds were beautiful and soft, and our breakfasts were so well thought out and put together. The bicycle hire here is much cheaper than elsewhere in the city, and lets you get around town without too much hassle. We would absolutely stay here again!

AustraliaNo private shower but I suppose thats expected in ryokan, not really a big deal because the shower downstairs is private in that you will be the only one using it. The bath isn’t outdoors but that’s also not a big deal. It was sort of annoying having to rely on buses to get to a train station because they were always packed and annoying to have to top up an IC card.
Very welcoming and hospitable staff from the moment you walk in, they were always of assistance whenever required and was always careful to respect your privacy as well. The breakfast was great and the staff spoke very good English so it was very pleasant. The accomodation was clean and tidy at all times. It was my birthday and they even offered a ‘celebratory style’ tea ceremony!

CanadaA bit far from Kyoto station.
The hosts were amazing! We got greeted with some tea as they brought our luggages up and we got to wear yukatas as they performed the tea ceremony. They prepared baths for us and it was all a very pleasant experience. There was a go board in our room and that was fun too. The kind lady also called a taxi for us as we were leaving. Definitely recommend!

PortugalOur stay at Ryokan Tori was for sure one of the highlights of our trip to Japan. Satako and her husband were so kind and so welcoming -- and the experience that they create for their guests is magical. The ryokan is located in a wonderful part of Kyoto, and we enjoyed exploring the shrines, temples and traditional streets that surround it. After exploring, we returned to a tea ceremony that Satako shared with us. Afterwards we bathed in the onsen, and then slept incredibly well in the traditional bedrooms. Breakfast the next morning was wonderful. We felt like we were in a dream the entire time -- it was an enchanting experience. Our night at Ryokan Tori will stay in my memory and heart forever. Thank you Satako!! Beijinhos from Portugal.

Location was really nice, its located on the quieter side of Kyoto. The hosts were so nice and kind to sit with us and explain us the places nearby. It was a unique ryokan experience. They were really inspiring on how to give a perfect experience to your guests. The flea antique market suggestion was the best part, we enjoyed it and spend hours roaming the streets. Breakfast is traditional and just right portions.

FranceThat I didn't book for a longer stay in Kyoto, we would have appreciated staying an extra day.
We had an amazing stay, Satako and her husband were very delightful and helpful with everything. The ryokan was very authentic and in very good taste. We loved the tea ceremony, the hot baths and the breakfasts were absolutely delicious. There are kimono housewear to wear inside. Satako gave us very good suggestions about visiting, restaurants and the public transportation to use - what a wonderful Japanese welcome.
