Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United KingdomNot many open restaurant options close by at this time of year but very kind that the owner gave us a lift (and the restaurant staff drove us home again).
It was a really interesting place to stay with lots of charm. We had a good sized room with plenty of space, comfrotable futon beds, seating area, hot water & green tea provided regularly etc. We enjoyed a soak in one of the two onsite onsen at the end of the day. The owners are very kind and helpful, booking tables at restaurants, driving us to a restaurant (as there didn't seem to be many open in the immediate vicinity). Despite lack of restaurants it was in a good location for getting around, close to buses and the train station.

The owners were very nice! I had a lot of luggage and they were so kind to drive me to the train station. The hot spring was great

AustraliaNothing
The couple who ran the hotel were lovely and were even kind enough to drive us a few places. The room was older but clean, and we enjoyed the futons and tatami mats. The shared bathroom was a tad inconvenient at times, but the onsite onsen made up for it, and you still have your own private toilet, so overall, it's OK.

SpainNothing, everything was fine.
Unreal hospitality of the owners, even for Japanese standards. They were very welcoming and serving. They booked and drove us to a local restaurant ( one of the best in the town mori-meshi) because it was rainy without even asking. They also drove us to the station the next day, again without us even having to ask, which was a relief for us. The onsen was a good visit, it was working 24/7 and was large enough to host 5 of us comfortably. As the weather was awful when we arrived they hurried to get our room ready as soon as possible.

AustraliaThe owners / hosts were very kind and so accommodating. They helped us with getting to the ropeway station, booked us dinner reservations (hard to get) dropped us there and back and even dropped us to the train station for our journey to our next destination. They really made our stay. The private onsen was also great for our family. We had the best night sleep after the onsen.

it’s a traditional accommodation with lots of charm. It’s situated behind the shrine. The room we stayed in was absolutely lovely. The staff are super kind and very helpful.

United StatesWe loved our stay here! We were wanting a more traditional style stay with access to a private onsen and this was everything we wanted. The owners are so delightful and they wanted to help us so much. A typhoon arrived during our stay but we felt very safe during the storm and the owners even offered to drive us at times because they were worried about the storm (we are from Texas with hurricanes so it didn't seem too bad to us overall but they were very concerned about our safety). The rooms were large and we had a beautiful view of one of the smaller Hakone shrine. We spent half of our first day relaxing in the room with the windows open. The private onsens are also amazing! They were so big, the biggest one could probably easily fit a party of 5 comfortably. If you are looking to stay here please realize this is a traditional Japanese style inn, if you are looking for a modern hotel stay this isn't the place for you. It is an older building owned by a family, it is not a western style Marriott. But if you want a unique charming experience, with the most amazing onsen ever, and the kindest hosts this is the perfect place for you. Thank you for allowing us to visit, hopefully we can come again one day when the weather is clearer! This was absolutely my favorite stay in Japan.

BelgiumNo private shower, however, as we used the Onsen (natural hot tub) available it didn’t matter because you shower there anyway.
The rooms are spacious and comfortable, perfect opportunity to experience the traditional Japanese way of living!

This was amazing! Never have I seen people so hospitable and welcoming! They helped us so much, felt like home! 2 private onsen which were amazing, really refreshing! I could literally cry from happiness! I felt so good when leaving here! But sad we had to go! If I am ever in Hakone again, I will definitely come back here! Jin-san and his wife are the best and most friendly people I have ever met!

United StatesThe property is an old-style Japanese inn and a little difficult to find. You need Wi-Fi to connect Google maps to find it.
The inn was managed by a team of husband and wife. Both of them were exceptionally friendly and helpful even though they couldn't speak much English. Their kind hospitality was way beyond our expectations. 1. On our first day, we arrived in Hakone late and would have missed the Hakone Ropeway ride up the mountain. The husband was so kind and took us in his van and dropped us off right at the Ropeway station. 2. On our departure day, we, a party of 7 travelers had many luggage, the husband loaded our bags in his minivan while his wife took us through a neighborhood short cut and walked with us to the train station to Osaka. 3. Their inhouse private hot spring bath facility was very nice. 4. Staying at this property felt just like visiting a family member; a great way to experience Japanese culture and hospitality.

United KingdomNothing, it was incredible in every way :)
Fantastic accommodation in idyllic settings. There were 2 onsens which you could use at your leisure (locking from the inside for privacy) which we enjoyed using before and after our days exploring!! The couple who run the inn where such kind and hospitable people (going above and beyond and even driving us to our stop for our driving experience) and always greeting us as we entered and left the inn. The room was big in the Japanese style with futons and an area to relax and drink the provided green tea :) Such an incredible place to visit and highly recommend to anyone!!

RussiaThere was quite a big spider web at one of the onsens, but it's fine. We still had the best time.
Everything was awesome, even if there was no breakfast. The staff was VERY VERY welcoming. The owner told us everything we need to know and more. There are two onsens and there is no need for a reservation, you can just walk in and close a door. The design of onsens is top notch and you should visit both of them. The room is really nice and clean, it really felt like an old japanese room. Also then we were checking out and the owner insisted on driving us to our next destination just for convenience. We are really happy with our stay here.

United KingdomNothing! Be aware there are no showers in your room, these will be at the onsen. But they were available any time we needed them and shampoo and body wash were provided.
We had a large room with a separate living area and toilet room with air conditioning. We enjoyed both of the private onsen and the use of the yukata provided by the venue. We had tea making facilities, a fridge, tv and safe in our room. Our hosts went out of their way to make us feel welcome, even dropping us off at the museum in their car on the first day, and reserving us a table at a local restaurant and again providing us with a lift there and back!

SwitzerlandThe hotel is a bit on the older side which gives it some character but not everyone might prefer this. It was also a bit far from Hakone attractions so we had to rely on public transport but I'm not sure if you can get a lot closer since they are all a bit spread out.
The two onsen were great, one was very 'special' and a fun surprise. The owners called restaurants for us and drove us there which was very kind. It has a very traditional feel and interesting corners with memorabilia can be discovered when walking around the hotel.

GermanyEverything! We really enjoyed our stay and the great hospitality. Particularly the two hot springs and traditional furnishings as well as the location itself. One can easily get there by bus from Odawara station as the bus stop is very close to the ryokan. Several mini markets and the open-air museum are (which is worth visiting) nearby. Other destination like lake Ashi can be reaches by bus too.
