Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

GermanyThe hotel is generally in need of some significant renovation. Also the half board was quite expensive. Otherwise it is an ideal location for groups on the Kumano Kodo trail.
The hotel is close to the Grand Kumano Shrine and has a shuttle service to and from the tourist information center. The Shinseki dinner and breakfast were both very good and quite large. The private thermal bath was nice if you want some privacy as a couple.

AustraliaThe facilities are a bit old, but the service and hot springs are great.
Beautiful, simple, and spacious rooms in the Japanese-style washitsu that includes tatami mats as flooring. The hotel looks old, but it has a sense of history. The on-site traditional onsen, with both open-air private and communal-public baths areas, is one of the hotel's main attractions. The hotel provides yukatas (robe) and slippers for accessing the Onsens. It is about 5km from Kumano Hongu Taisha Shrine, and the hotel offers a shuttle bus service to either the Hongu Information Cenre or Hosshinmon-oji. We stayed two nights and had a relaxing time time; it felt like a peaceful retreat. A great place to stay as part of the Kumano Kodo.

CanadaThe private onsen were too hot for us :) Is it possible to have some at different temperatures and post temperature on the door? The public onsen was amazing alternative if you need cooler temperatures :)
4 Huge clean outdoor private hot springs available. Spectacular outdoor public onsen steps away with 4 temperature pools. Suspension bridge was nice . 3 minute drive to Kawayu . Staff were extremely helpful when we locked ourselves out of room :D - thank you!

United StatesI did not realize if you want to eat in the restaurant, you have to book the dinner/breakfast when you book the room. I don't think they highlighted that in the bookings website. So when I got there, I had no other choice but eat in the food hall area with self-service. The food end up to be quite homey and good, but I would eat at the restaurant if I could. Their restaurant meal looks wonderful.
We stayed here 1 night for the Kumano Kodo hike. The hotel is easy to find and close to the bus stop. There are 4 private onsens anyone can use. We don't really need to wait to get an open onsen room. It's quite big, can easily fit 10 people in the onsen pool. It also got laundry and food hall area that you can self-service.

United KingdomWe did not book a meal plan originally and therefore could not take any meals at the hotel (not even breakfast) despite contacting the hotel a few days in advance to say we would like to have meals after all. Apparently it has something to do with booking through booking.com that can't be modified to add meals and they can't charge them separately either. So booking a meal plan upfront is highly recommended.
The onsen itself is great - there are four private outdoor onsens that are on a first come first save basis but we never had to wait. The hotel made a simple but delicious bento for our hike - you order it the night before and it's great.

AustraliaAdding formal dinner or breakfast to the reservation was quite expensive (Dinner: 8,800 JPY, Breakfast: 3,300 JPY) - we didn't dine at the hotel, so can't comment on whether it is worth the cost.
The baths are the absolute selling point of this hotel. They are well-maintained, open-air, and the private baths are a lovely experience to share with your travelling companions. The room itself was dated, but clean and functional. We had our own toilet and sink. It's worth noting that there are no showers in the hotel building (the showers are located at the baths, in a separate building). Convenient location with plenty of bus access to popular parts of the Kumano Kodo.
