Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

CyprusFelt a bit expensive considering some shared facilities including the toilet, but nevertheless, an amazing experience!
The location is really convenient close to the main train station. The staff is really nice and helpful. It was our first time staying in a traditional ryokan and the experience was really unique. The room was nice and comfortable and the shared facilities were cleaned. We also enjoyed the private onsen and we had a dinner at the restaurant on the first floor which was also amazing!

United StatesThe shared bathroom wasn’t really an issue with only two other rooms, but the only shower is in the onsen area. You reserve the onsen for an hour, so if the other two rooms have two hours in a row, you can’t shower during a pretty long window.
It’s pretty close to the main train station. The (restaurant) staff was pleasant. We enjoyed the onsite onsen. The town shut down early, so it was convenient having the Box Burger right there. Pro-tip - Five minutes away is a cute shrine “Hien Waterfall” that should be visited.

United KingdomA couple of things: 1. Not great sound proof. I could hear people talking late night. 2. Too many notifications and messages before checking in.. it would be good to include all the key info in 1 or 2 concise messages and contact guests a week before, not every week before they check in. I’ve booked my hotel 2months earlier..felt every week I’ve got your message/reminders. 3. I could smell personal fragrance of my duvet and got a sting by a bug in the duvet.

United KingdomThere was some confusion on our second night with the request board for the onsen; we added our room sign to a time slot but another guest moved this. It was no fault of the property owner's but if the board is being cleaned it could be a good idea to state what time this will occur to ensure the same doesn't happen yo other guests.
Fantastic accommodation and the perfect stay for us in Hakonowa. The rooms were self set up but easy to do and the onsen was an amazing extra for our stay. The accommodation is a 10-15 minutes walk from the train/bus station.

SingaporeThe room was a little smaller than we had expected so it was a little tough to manoeuvre with our big luggage. we didnt check carefully that we had booked the futon room or not, so make sure u check! the bed is for the double room. The only showering option is in the onsen and that requires booking in advance by room. It isnt that hard to book a 50min slot as there are only 3 rooms in the entire place and we didnt mind it, but some may find it a hassle should u need to shower urgently!
It was clean and very well kept. The provided breakfast was nourishing and hearty - the pumpkin soup was really yummy! The amenities were great, cutleries, yukatas, microwave and water dispenser. We loved the private onsen and the experience of it in our accommodation.

SwitzerlandThe mosquitoes really got me (even in December). A mosquito plug would be welcome. It’s a bit strange to go to the onsen by going through the restaurant. I also found it a bit pricey for a room you have to set up yourself.
Beautiful old traditional house with traditional Japanese rooms. There is a lovely burger restaurant on the ground floor. Restaurant staff were lovely and the checkin process is straightforward.

United KingdomBreakfast was a bit basic. Perhaps we didn't read the small print. For value for money we found this to be very expensive comparative to the rest of Japan. For a shared bathroom and paper thin walls it wasn't a 100% winner.
A really lovely place in a great location. Nice clean facilities and really helpful staff downstairs in the restaurant.

Saudi ArabiaShared bathroom was a bit hard at night , you need to be quiet cause house is old so walls are thin which didn't bother much but others might not like it ... other than that it was perfect
They were extremely friendly and helpful, we liked the fact there was box burger downstairs offering vegetarian options since hakone city lacks that , private small onsen to be reserved with no cost , very Japanese house experience everything was authentic and you feel warm with other residents and employees, they provide microwave and little station ... amazing walk down the river it was amazing and would go there again

AustraliaWe were there for 2 nights. The booking confirmation indicated there was no bed service but yet when we got back to the room at the end of the day we found the bedding had been put away so we had to remake our bed again. I know that we we’re staying in a small space but it would have been nice to have somewhere to sit rather than the floor. There was no common area to sit anywhere outside the room either. We did not have the breakfast as this is not really the type of food we have for breakfast. Too much sugary food for us and we don’t have soup for breakfast. There was a small fridge and tea making facilities in the room and a microwave outside in the common area. The location was fine. We had to walk about 1km from the train. Luckily we had bought a Japanese Sim Card so we could find the location. Also had a different name on the door when we got there so we weren’t initially sure we had arrived at the right place.
I personally didn’t mind the futon bed but it’s not for everyone. I found it comfortable and while it was quite cold outside it was very warm inside the room. The blanket and doona were so light but very warm so I slept relatively well. We did have some neighbours making noise at 1.00 am on our second night but that has nothing to do with the property owners as there are plenty of notices saying the walls are thin and to be respectful of everyone else. The Onsen is as also very good. Nice and hot. I used morning and night. It was one of the reasons I chose this accommodation in the first place.
