Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United KingdomThe ventilation of bathrooms is not that great so that it could get relatively humid.
The owner was very helpful and informative. The location is good for travellers with rental cars or backpackers who rely on public transport. It is very close to bus stations, essential for travellers who don't drive. Packed bentos were very well considered for travellers wishing to start their hiking journey early in the morning.

SwitzerlandThe property mentions that a shared kitchen is available, however the managers wouldn't let the guests "due to Covid". Whether they decide to let the guests use the shared kitchen space is up to the management and I respect that, however they should inform their guests in advance of what the conditions are. If they only allow guests to use the microwave and oven toaster, they should specify that clearly. I only stayed for a short period so it was not a big problem for me, however I met many travelers who were planning to stay for 1-2 months there and they were very disappointed about not being able to use the kitchen. Most guests chose that property because they wanted to use the kitchen and many would have booked a different place if they had known the "new kitchen rules". The wifi was also extremely slow (basically unusable), so if you need to use the internet for work or else, I would recommend staying elsewhere or checking their connection reliability in advance.
The location was convenient for hikes in the Yakusugi Land area (Jomonsugi, etc) The shared living and dining space was comfortable and a great place to meet other travelers. It was really nice to have the breakfast or lunch box options for those of us going on hikes starting early in the morning.

SingaporeThe room was a little dusty and I could find cobwebs behind the table. It's pretty barebones for the most part, but I could appreciate this as a charm to the place.
It's a neat little guesthouse located a 30-minute walk from the heart of Anbo, the nearest 'town'. The staff was really hospitable and saw to my every need. Both the breakfast and the bento were great!

JapanWe woke up with a huge huntsman spider in our room, which is something that can happen out in nature, but there was no one in the the house to call for help. Reading other reviews I was looking forward to meet the staff, but somehow we were not lucky during our stay.
Location is close to a bus stop, there are some restaurants in walking distance. It was nice to have our own bathroom. They had some helpful information on their website. In general the accommodation was clean and we had anything we needed. The included breakfast options were also very nice and delicious.

DenmarkMy review is concerning the hostess. The management of this guest house is very strict and controlling to a point where it got unpleasant for me to stay there. Me experience with this wonderful island unfortunately got tainted by living under these circumstances. One day after getting home from a 10 hour hike in the forest, just when I entered the guesthouse, I got accused of theft, which was a misunderstanding. The hostess's lacking communication skills makes her act rude and mocking which I find unacceptable. After that experience I decided to check out one day before I had planned to, just to get away from that place. A word if advise, don't check in at all.

United StatesI slept on an extremely comfortable futon, and was given everything needed to recharge at the end of a long day exploring Yakushima and be prepared for the next one. The staff were incredibly fun and welcoming, and did an excellent job of checking in on every guests itinerary for the day to make sure they had what they needed/knew how to get there and back in one piece. The breakfast bentos and optional lunch bentos were a convenient and filling way to feed an all-day hike. Everything was exceptional.

Japan- Misleading information and inaccurate photos. False advertisement. There is no access to the common area or kitchen. The reason given is Corona virus . However, they put up a Christmas tree and they closed the area for the visitors. The owner and her staff/ friends were the only ones accessing it and they were spending time there talking loudly and making a lot of noise. So, the rules apply only to us and apparently guests are the only one susceptible to get Corona virus and spread it. We had to eat our food in our small rooms as we didn’t have any dedicated space for that. We couldn’t even meet or interact with other travelers which is an important part of the experience. Furthermore, the breakfast included was a cold bento instead of a warm meal as advertised. We had the same bento for 10 days straight. It was prepared the day before and kept in a plastic bag near the shoes area. We can’t even warm it up as the microwave can be used only between 17:00 and 20:00. - Too many rules. I have been living in Japan so I am familiar with the common rules but this was another level. I was shocked but the amount of restrictions and signs everywhere. We couldn’t relax as we had to think every time about the rules. - No respect for guests. They were banging in the doors and walls and were using vacuumn cleaner and washing machine early in the morning. I understand that they have to clean but not as early as 7:00 or 8:00 am. We were in a holiday and we were hiking so we were tired. Furthermore, the owner was rude and disrespectful toward my aunt. My aunt doesn’t speak Japanese and she doesn’t live in Japan. She was confused by all the long list of unusual rules and the owner yelled at her. We believe that the owner doesn’t care about the guests at all. She wants to cash in the money without providing any service. She thinks of the place more as her home/ her territory than a business.
Nothing The worst service and hotel in my life and it is a shame that it happened in Japan. Japan is famous for its high quality service, its professionalism and its politeness and respectfulness. I am really disappointed especially that it impacted our experience in this beautiful and amazing island . - Zero cleanness. We stayed for 10 days and not once they cleaned our room. We vacuumed by ourselves. Moreover, I found two worms in the refrigerator where we stored our food ( the refrigerator of the guests is different than hers and her staff). It means that they don’t clean the refrigerator used by the guests. The owner will clean and make the effort when it is « her area or staff area » and she will make little to no effort when it is the guests area.

New ZealandThe owner was rude , Ove actually never bee spoken to like that by any guesthouse ever in 40 years of travel. I would never go back there . It was a sad last night of my time on the island. Also they said it would include breakfast and then upon arrival said that they couldn't offer that anymore. I wasn't allowed to use the kitchen, or spend any time outside my room. I think she was afraid of covid.

We tried our very best and adhered to them but definitely do not appreciate being berated like school children. Unless u are a hiker who just needs a space to rest, no frills; otherwise - do consider otherwise.

Suginoko is an awesome place! If you come to Yakoshima with the ferry, it's not that far away from Anbo and easy to get there of foot, and with the bus as well! The accomodation is clean, cozy, it embraces the nature. Ayumi-san is really helpful and were super nice whenever we had "problems" or questions! Cheers Daniel & Chieri
