Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United KingdomThis property is quite remote so getting a taxi there was fine, but leaving early in the morning with baggage was tricky! We couldn’t organise any taxis to take us down the steep hill to the bus station but managed to walk down ok. We went in early April and found out (too late) that only one restaurant was open in the evenings and all the others close at 4pm. Although well equipped with a fridge, microwave and tiny cooker, there were no cooking implements eg bowls or spatulas etc! As the property is unmanned, there was no one to provide anything on request. Correspondence with a managing team was by email and reasonably helpful. More honesty on the remoteness of the property and facilities in the town eg taxis and restaurants would have been useful before booking.
Wow, what a location! Lucky enough to spend a morning watching Mount Fuji come in to view in between the clouds from our room! A true delight! The accommodation, amenities including the onsen and location is exceptional!

SingaporeNothing much that I didn't like here except that if I had known that this is a no-man operation guesthouse, I may reconsider booking because it is a guesthouse where there is no check-in counter, no staff to greet you when you arrive/depart, no staff there to help if you need help urgently. Like I was trying to get a taxi to town but I have to call myself (and the taxi company don't speak English). So everything is done through the booking.com via messaging. Of course to be clear, I didn't encounter anything unpleasant or upsetting here. It was wonderful but I had really wanted my partner to try a real ryokan stay. It was still an excellent stay. And an advise is you need a car to stay here. I walked 1.2km (one way) each day to get to the lakeside town for my meals which is worth it but it's just tiring.
I love the tranquillity of the surroundings - located mid of Mt Hakone, away from main road, little crowd of guests staying in nearby guesthouses and especially the view of Mt Fuji and Lake Ashi at the window. There was a day I met the staff who was there to urgently repair the onsen - he was very polite and tries his best to answer questions. The room and beds are clean, doesn't feel dated and no odd smells (that is if the tatami scent don't count).

NetherlandsResponsive but not accommodating as we requested 1 hour later check-out so 11 in stead of 10 and that was not possible, nor was it possible to use the Onsen after checking out for an additional hour. Futons were quite hard but we solved it by stacking. The vulcano creates hydrogen sulfate which can smell like rotten eggs but that can't be helped. There is room freshener available. Booking.com should definitely warn people that getting to this hotel is hard. Either 1 hour public transport from Odawara/ Yumoto and then walking up a super steep hill and multitude of steps (not for everyone) Or paying for a cab which costs 80 euros from Odawara/ Yumoto and will then allow you to venture out without your luggage, but you would still have to be able to make the climb up at the end of the day. Also there is not really any options for supermarkets or restaurants around so staying here requires planning your meals up front. Maybe a list of what is nearby would be helpful although everything on the list provided to us by the accommodation was closed. Best probably to shop at Odawara station in the Deli upstairs and take that with you by cab as it will add to your luggage.
The view from our apartment was out of this world. It made you feel like you were all alone in the world. While reading articles on how many people were going out of their way to get that one perfect Mount Fuji picture, we could almost hug it from our huge window. An unforgettable location!! Accommodation is very responsive and has everything you need. Outside of the room but within the building there are plates, fresh water machine, bathing accessories, well equipped laundry room and of course a vending machine.

IsraelTake into account your only have a private toilet, but not bathroom, which is shared with other guests and it's located as part of the hot springs bath room. It's not a big deal as most times this room is empty, but yet this is something to note. Also, if you don't used to sleep on a Futon mattress, take into account you'll need at least 2-3 one over the other, as for us we had only 2 extras for all the family, and I think they should offer more.
Great place to stay and experience Hakone area, without ripping out your wallet. We were family of 6 people, and the room was big enough to host our all in comfort. The room was clean and organized, and you have a refrigerator, microwave, glasses and other kitchen amenities. The location is great and close to all activities in the area, there are restaurants around as well as 24/7 grocery shops. Overall very recommended place to stay.

United KingdomIf you’re not travelling by taxi then it’s a very steep and long hill to walk up from the bus stop - you will be out of breath Lack of flexibility with fixed check in and check out times - some more communication/ planning with the cleaner could resolve this and this would add to the customer service.

SingaporeHeat was leaking out through the big windows, closing the panel doors didn’t help much. Hard to get here without a car, and there’s a giant pothole on the road to the carpark. Snowy roads leading up to the ryokan means winter tires is necessary. Shared onsen is a bit small.
Good view of fuji and the lake, ice bucket and ice machine, laundry and iron. Lots of appliances in the room including microwave, toaster. Also has a tea set and wine opener.

AustraliaThe location is great but only when you travel with car. We didn’t have car and arrive togendai at 5pm. It was all dark and so scary to walk. We couldn’t book a taxi as they speak Japanese. When the bus driver was kind enough to talk to the taxi company, they said there is no taxi. It was not a good experience on the first day in Hakone.

United StatesThe breakfast was only bread and juice. For this price, I would have expected a better breakfast. The vending machine to buy food didn’t work. The main room window’s exterior was dirty, which was unfortunate because the view was so amazing. The drinking water tank didn’t work so well and was empty in the morning.
Beautiful view of Ashinoko lake! The dinner was delicious and the bath was wonderful. We had free Netflix. The room was clean and comfortable.

GermanyThe place has much less services (or any) and amenities offered. You go in and out without meeting any host. There is no shuttle bus, which other hotels offer, no bookable meals (don't be confused by the pictures showing dinner and breakfast), no one can take your luggage if you were planning to send it ahead. If you want a tea or coffee in the morning, you will have to get it from the highly priced vending machine. While you will not see the host, you will certainly hear from them, they send multiple messages about the rules (and fines if you break them), to a point where we, very clean people in general, were worried about doing things wrong. There is also no place to dry your towels after using them. There is a small stand near the sink, but way to small for the size of towels supplied. Our booking on booking.com also said the room would be with a shower. It was without one. Maybe it's a translation etror. Later information send by the host also made that clear. But since the booking is not cancellable, it's a tad late then. Either way, it was a nice stay. You just have to be ok with the system, which compared to the hospitality of most Japanese hotels is very different. If you are ok with that and if you are there by car/willing to carry your luggage up quite a few steps, go ahead and book it. It is a truly beautiful place.
Generally, the place was gorgeous. From the ropeway station it is a 25 min hike up the mountain (or you take another bus or taxi) but every step up is worth it, as the view through the gigantic windows is absolutely worth it. You have a direct view on mt. Fuji and can watch the sunrise without changing out of your pajamas. It was generally very clean, some seating pillows had stains, but those seem like they were cleaned but wouldn't come out. Maybe the guests before were messier. The bathing area is also great, it is clean, shampoo ect is supplied and you again can see mt. Fuji from the window as you soak in the hot hot water. Since not a lot of guests are there at the same time, you almost always have it to yourself. I would go there again.

Hakone Ashinoko Hanaori is truly a slice of heaven! From the moment we step in, we greeted with authentic Japanese hospitality and charm. The majestic views of Mount Fuji are simply breathtaking, especially when enjoyed from the comfort of your traditional Japanese-style room. The hot spring onsen experience – it's pure bliss, offering relaxation and rejuvenation after a day of exploring Hakone. Its the perfect blend of Japanese tradition, stunning scenery, and ultimate relaxation, this is the place to be.

United StatesI booked this place a few hours before arriving, expecting a nice ryokan with a dinner experience as advertised. We arrived and messaged the host about how to get dinner and they said we cannot have it because we were supposed to have booked it when we booked the place - this was not an option when I booked... Fine, I asked if we could add the dinner now (it was about 5pm) the host said we could not. The dinner-in-the-room ryokan experience was the only reason we booked this place. There is no furniture other that the giant dinner table in the center of the room, so not conducive to spending time there for anything other than dining or sleeping on the low-quality futons crammed into the corner. There were no restaurants open nearby and it was getting late. Our only option to eat dinner that night was to book another hotel in a nearby town and catch the last bus (which we just barely made) to get there. There were no functioning taxi services. Definitely avoid this place if you don't have your own car, from the bus you have to drag your baggage 1k up a hill and about 500 stairs. Anyway, host would not let us cancel even tho we had only booked a few hours before, the hotel was almost completely empty (so they weren't missing any business because of us) and they had falsely advertised a ryokan experience with food. Somehow Booking.com allowed them to keep both nights of our money $350 without any refund. I feel taken advantage of. We were charged $350 for causing no inconvenience to the host and had to pay for a whole new hotel and scramble to get there late in the evening. It was a huge hassle for us and the host was completely unsympathetic. I highly recommend skipping this experience so you don't get scammed and so you don't support someone with such poor business practices and lack of good faith.
Not worth the view.

The men’s was big enough to comfortably fit 4 people, probably more. Property owners were very responsive and helpful. They even drove us down to the bus stop in the rain!

NetherlandsI am personally not a super big fan of the public baths, so I would have loved to have an option for a private bath or a personal shower. Either way I understand that it is a traditional thing in Japan.
