Impossible to avoid mosquitos and other small biting bugs (midgies?) prevalent overnight lead to uncomfortable sleep for us all. Bug spray from the Family Mart down the road helped a little but not totally. Bathroom was aesthetically unappealing, but fully functional. Don’t make the same mistake we did and leave food outside of the fridge overnight. We had vermin visit and make a mess of the food packaging in the process - not nice to wake up to the next morning! Obviously not the fault of the host as vermin are everywhere worldwide, but mention here to encourage others to keep all food products in the fridge. Difficult to get a taxi back to the station to head to next destination (though was easy to get one upon arrival thankfully, so we didn’t need to carry baggage uphill!). Be aware it is a 15 min walk (downhill mostly) with baggage if unable to book taxi. There is no ride share in the township.

Gorgeous unique stay, in what is a heritage property. Very clean, despite the age of the property. Walking distance to the Hakone-Yumoto township. Hakone free pass bus stop down the road (check timetables as bus is infrequent). Host was easily contactable and friendly, check in instructions clear and easy to follow. Listing is accurate as far as photos and amenities are concerned.

Bathroom/Shower set up is unusal but very acceptable.

We enjoyed the house while exploring Hakone. Due to our itinerary we ended up only sleeping in the house due to a late dinner and an early start. We had an early checkin to leave our luggage while exploring Hakone. We loved the onsen close by (part of a hotel but allows day visitors).

Should install heater at the corridor

It is a quite place at top hill. U need to walk through a high slope to get to the Inn. Lots of Onsen places can be visited nearby. The house is big and fit in at least 10 person

Nothing with the property itself. However, it is located on the opposite bank from the train station so there is a hill to walk to get to the property if you are walking with heavy bags. Also, the road outside is pretty popular, so there is some traffic noise.

It's an older property with floor mattresses in rooms apart from one 'western-style' room. It was nice to experience a stay that was different from the city.

Unconventional place with lots of history. We thought it was a great touch that the owners left photoalbums for us to look at.

Could do with a upgrades- newer shelving/ hooks in the bathrooms. Light fittings in corridors were hug low. Could do with new carpet in the "western room", check on the a/c unit in the western room as it was loud when in operation. Some of the japanese shoji paper had watermarks. The dining room table top was detached from the table legs. Acknowledge that the doll adds to the traditional Japanese narrative, we weren't used to sleeping in a room with it.

All of the rooms had it's own heating/cooling unit. Like the convenience for self check in. Nice for host to keep photo albums on the property for guest to flip through.

If you are traveling during the colder months, there is heating in the rooms but it is drafty when walking the hallways and kitchen. The streets and paths leading up to the home are small. Be prepared to walk single file to get to the location and watch for cars as the roads are small and often times, one car had to wait while the other went by. To get to the main part of town, there is a steep walk down and back up but we found we could take the bus back up. The transportation system was confusing so research that before you go.

Traditional Japanese home with a personal touch. There was someone watching for us to arrive and when we did, she enthusiastically showed us around the home. Although we could not understand each other, we communicated well through gestures. She showed us each room and how to make tea. We enjoyed experiencing traditional living. Be prepared to sleep on a futon mattress on the floor as well as eating at a low table. This was a great experience.

The bath room is a bit dirty. This is quite unexpected in Japan. We slept on the second floor and it was very noisy at midnight due to the strong wind and the engines of the air conditioner. The windows are loosely fixed and thus when there is strong wind, it will be very noisy and all of us could not sleep well. This is an old house which needs renovation and not suitable to be rented out as B&B.

The location is difficult to find as the small house is up on a slope.

Bus K only sporadic so check bus times. Just be aware, only bed is a single, would be great if it was a double.

House was gorgeous, everything supplied. The Japanese manager made us breakfast, was MASSIVE! We couldn't eat it all, but so yummy. She was so sweet. Bus K only comes hourly so watch return times, easy to walk to station but back is uphill. But what a special experience, we LOVED it. Host v good with communication. House was gr8
