Areas of the ryokan that seemed out-dated and dirty

We had to get used to the Japanese breakfast with fish and warm soup etc. There is no alternative. The onsen is much smaller than it looks on the photos.

As a Ryokan it is the very traditional accommodation you expect. There is a bus stop right in front of the house which makes transportation easy. Throughout the day you can wear the traditional Kimonos. The dinner was great! After 9 pm free drinks are offered until 10 pm.

Amazing old japanese building, breathtaking nature around. Bus stop to Hakone and Odawara stations just at the exit from property. Beautiful garden in 2 minutes walking. The onsen was wonderful, and dinner and breakfast made my mouth feel like heaven.

We booked the villa so it’s a bit of uphill walk from the main house. There aren’t enough electrical outlet in the bedroom!

What a perfect place to spend a night (or more) in Hakone. Very good location (bus stop in front of hotel and nice 15 minutes walk to Open Air Museum. Also the staff was super friendly and helpful. It was really guiet and the view from the balcony is really beautifull.

Very peaceful and serene with a beautiful view! Accommodations were traditional and spotless. Breakfast and dinner were delicious and we were able to try many new, delicious foods. Easy to get to by bus from the train station We would love to stay again and would recommend to anyone!

The public bath was a bit small and the view was limited (as expected from pictures) but it was enough for me. If I would come again, I'd come with a second person and book a private Onsen with a nice view.

Super happy with the great service provided by the staff. I truly felt they paid close attention to my needs. They helped me carry my heavy luggage and even when I was late to breakfast they made sure to call me and have the food there to serve me. Had a lovely stay in this beautiful and clean Ryokan. I also loved the hotpot with a special Amazake taste. The breakfast was plenty. I loved that it was quite calm as there were not many other people here, I had the public bath to myself which was nice.

Beautiful place, overwhelming. This is very authentic ryokan. And the room was beautiful. Both dinner and breakfast was beautifully presented and tasted AMAZING! So happy I got to experience this wonderful roykan.

Nothing, it was great. The only issue was the bus ride to the hotel with our luggage.

Everything was perfect! The staff was kind, food was delicious, rooms were comfortable and clean, and the private spring was amazing. Hakone Kowakien Mikawaya Ryokan truly made our trip special.

Wish I could stay a night or two longer! 😭

I loved the views from the Ryokan, was totally worth the walk up the hilly road with a suitcase. The staff were excellent and after I checked out it was raining so the very smartly dressed man behind the desk helped me by giving me the bus timetable and even took me to the bus stop I needed to go! The food was delicious both dinner and breakfast and VERY enjoyed both the Indoor bath and Outdoor bath in the villa!! What a wonderful stay! 🥰 Thank you so much!

No ramp or elevator for luggage when going up to the entrance or going down

The included breakfast and dinner. Quaint area but very beautiful. Close to convenience stores nearby and bus stops. Located in between attractions. Love the view from my room

Facility could use a little bit of updating, although with caution not to change the historical nature of the old building. That was very charming.

Staff were kind and helpful. Food was amazing and SO many different courses. I have never seen anything like it! The food was a very unique experience for us and we appreciated how authentic and traditional everything was. We splurged for the private soaking tub on our patio and it was well worth it--we went in several times during our stay.

Beautiful traditional property. A great welcome. Lovely, spacious traditional room with comfortable beds. Outstanding Japanese food from thoughtful chef with delicious ingredients. Dinner and breakfast in a Dining Room. Good indoor and outside Onsen baths.
