Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.

By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

SingaporeNothing to dislike. For the location it is at, it provides serenity.
Private bath on the balcony with views of the hills and golf course, staff tried their best to accommodate to us English speakers.

United StatesWe chose to use the Hakone Free Pass and traveling via bus was a bit challenging. However, the Ryokan provided service to drop us off at the bus stop; otherwise a about a 6 min walk.
The breakfast and dinner was excellent and classy. Our expectation of a Japanese Ryokan was certainly exceeded. Food was great, service was excellent. We spoke English and the young woman who helped us during our stay was very friendly and helpful. Her English was great and it was nice to have her helping us.

United StatesOur stay was so incredible and relaxing. We had a private onsen on the balcony that overlooked the country club and was beautiful to wake up to. Breakfast and dinner was included in the price of the room. I saw some reviews where the people didn't like the food... But it was so so good! We love all kinds of seafood, especially fresh, local things, so everything was delicious to us. I'd say that of you don't like seafood, you might not enjoy it as much but they were so accommodating that they'd likely have an alternate menu for you. For English speakers, its helpful to have a translator on you.

United StatesThe location was slightly inconvenient compared to other ryokan onsen, and our view overlooked the golf course, but there was no privacy screen as it would obstruct the view, but it made the onsen in our suite only usable at night. The shower was by the onsen as expected, but it was very cold outside at night making showering a little uncomfortable.
The staff were very kind. My mother wanted a traditional Ryokan experience, and I think it was all she hoped for.

IsraelThere was this lady (not Japanese) who was so rude, she wasn't a pleasant host and it seemed that we were a nuisance to her from the very beginning. The open-air bath was with scum all over. The food was not good.

United KingdomIt’s a bit shabby around the edges and the futon beds and pillows aren’t very comfortable. There was a horrible smell from the toilet as well. We got there a bit early and there was no real welcome - just come back at 3. Given there are no amenities nearby it would have been nice to at least been offered a drink or told where we could go nearby
The Onsen on the balcony was lovely. Food is amazing but a bit extreme and couldn’t eat some of the raw fish dishes but if you love raw eels then you will be fine !

United StatesThere really wasn’t a chance to call and have them get us from the bus station since we don’t speak Japanese and I’m not sure they can do that. The walk over with out suitcases to the property was like 15 mins, so ok.
The private onsen was dope as we were on the third floor. Good space for the room itself and overall the staff was kind and very attentive.

CanadaUnfortunately, the location of this hotel was about 1km away from the closest bus stop. Their shuttle service only drives you between the bus stop. We decided to walk with our suitcases since it would be too difficult to contact them for the shuttle. (The time it would take to contact them, we would have finished walking). It would be nice if they did shuttle service to the nearest tourist station such as Togendai or Gora. We chose a room with private toilet, private shower, and private onsen. The toilet was clean. The shower is actually outdoors on the balcony so I'd recommend choosing this option if going during a warm season as it can get cold out while taking an outdoor shower. The balcony floor had a lot of broken wood. The balcony railing was also all rusted and seemed like it would collapse any day. The room tatami mats and walls were heavily stained with dirt and possibly blood (from dead bugs maybe?). There were a lot of bugs and dust all over. The shared public onsens did not look very clean. The rooftop foot bath did not look maintained either, lots of bugs and webs all over furniture. Throughout the hotel you will sense moldiness as mentioned by other reviewers. The pictures do not accurately represent cleanliness. It's much more older and run down.
Most affordable option to try a private Onsen with a nice mountain view. We were running late for check-in but they were very accommodating and checking if we were still on the way. (Communicated through booking.com reservation website). We chose the option for included dinner and breakfast. The food was unique and good. I would give it a pass but there wasn't any rare or expensive meet that would blow you away. The private onsen was a nice place to spend relaxing time. We had the square shaped tub which was large enough for 2 people to sit.

CanadaThe walls and room were dirty and stained. This might be a plus for some, but there was too much food, it was very good but we couldn’t eat it all and it felt wasteful. Also it was not walkable and there was nothing around it so make sure you do everything you want to do before arriving.
The view was beautiful and the open air tub was great.

AustraliaThe Ryokan is a bit old and in need of a refreshment. There is a general musty smell. This was our first Ryokan stay and was half-board. The breakfast and dinner were not to our taste, there were no other options to choose from. While the staff were nice and polite any request was met with a humpf or eye roll.
The view from the balcony is gorgeous and the balcony bath is great!

United StatesThere is a language barrier, which is expected since I don’t speak Japanese, but it was much more difficult here than other places. Based on the reviews, they clearly book with English speakers but nothing is in English. Every other hotel I stayed in had the information they were going over with you in Japanese and English. She was trying to ask me when I wanted to be picked up by a shuttle. I couldn’t understand her so I tried to use my phone to translate the paper in front of me going over the details, but she dismissed me using my phone. I wasn’t trying to be rude, but I couldn’t figure out what was going on. They said my bed would be set up while I was at dinner. It was not. It took about 10m to get the gentleman at the front desk to understand what I was saying bc he didn’t speak any English and no one else was around. The room was clean but it looks worn out. Not in an antiquey, old style feel. It’s clearly modern items that need to be replaced/ updated. For the price I paid, it just wasn’t that nice. I stayed in a much nicer hotel in Kyoto at a fraction of the price. Also, if you use the bus to get to it, it’s not conveniently located. Especially if you have luggage with you.
Breakfast and dinner were pretty good. Plenty of food to eat. The staff was also very nice.

United StatesThe property contacted us several weeks prior to our visit asking if we needed transportation and we had requested that they book a taxi for the morning we were checking out. We indicated they we needed to leave around 9 for a 9:30 train departure. When we arrived we determined that they had not made the taxi request and that all taxis were booked. They also told us we paid for breakfast but breakfast is not served until 9am so we would not be able to have it. They did not offer a refund on the rate and said they were unable to send us with a bento box or offer any accommodation. This was disappointing as we had shared the time we needed to leave along with the taxi request weeks prior to arrival and they made no mention of the breakfast time prior to our arrival. in the end they were able to drive us to the train station if we left an hour earlier than 5 which we did. The staff were friendly but the mix up on the taxi and paying for a ryokan breakfast we were unable to partake made this a subpar experience.
We loved the personal onsen on our balcony and the dinner was very nice.

United StatesWe loved everything :)
The views from the balcony and private onsen were wonderful. It was extremely private and comfortable. The staff was amazing and so hospitable, even though they were not Japanese, it still felt like a traditional ryokan stay. The food was well prepared and generous. My husband and I had the most relaxing and enjoyable stay, we would definitely visit again. Ignore the negative reviews, I highly recommend visiting this place. They even allow you to go to the public onsen if you have tattoos.
